Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Cornered Dog

"...Here she is."

After a brief pause, Lin Yu picked up the black towel on the table and wiped the grease from his hands before opening the door a crack. His large frame blocked the girl's view.

Of course, there was also a curtain inside the workshop, so nothing could be seen anyway.

The girl wasn't even looking inside the workshop.

She had been curious and suspicious about why Lin Yu frequently stayed in this room and didn't allow anyone to approach.

But as the 'one week' deadline drew closer, her anxiety and uncertainty had overshadowed everything else, leaving her in a daze.

"Bai Wei, have you ever studied mechanical engineering?"

After a moment's thought, Lin Yu glanced at the three characters "Eligible Person" above the girl's head before asking.

"...My sister and I were mechatronics engineering students at the Ryan Group University."

Bai Wei remained silent for a moment, her expression vacant, before seemingly reacting to Lin Yu's question and replying.

"Mm."

Lin Yu nodded slightly, saying nothing more.

University, mechatronics engineering—clearly, these weren't things that could be found in the Wasteland settlement.

In other words, Bai Wei and her sister must be city residents.

Human trafficking couldn't happen close to their base; the original owner always targeted strangers from outside the settlements or those who had just arrived.

That's how he tricked the girl and her sister.

He, and the original owner, didn't know much beyond that.

"Let's eat."

Without saying anything else, Lin Yu sat down at the table and ate in silence.

He still didn't know how to approach the girl.

After all, he had inherited the original owner's identity and memories.

In a way, 'he' was the culprit who kidnapped and trafficked the girl's sister and then abducted the girl herself.

Therefore, he felt guilty towards her, but he was also wary, and there was a vague, indescribable emotion as well.

It wasn't love or hate.

It was simply that they had lived together for a month, and he had been almost excessively considerate.

Even a pet would develop some affection after that time, let alone a person.

And it wasn't like he hadn't actively deceived her, she was just trying to find her sister.

Unsure of how to act, he could only remain silent.

The meal was quiet and cold.

Throughout the meal, Bai Wei kept picking at her food, glancing at Lin Yu, hesitant to speak.

She wanted to ask, but she was afraid and worried.

The week was almost over.

But… only silence greeted her.

"I'm going out."

Without giving the girl a chance to hesitate or worry, Lin Yu changed his clothes and left.

The mechatronics workshop had a security door and surveillance, and Dawn had an intelligent system, so he wasn't worried about the girl making any moves.

The girl opened her mouth, but ultimately, a look of dejection crossed her face. She lowered her head, remaining silent.

She gradually curled up, her legs tucked up onto the chair, her arms wrapped around her knees, her head buried deep within, her shoulders trembling slightly.

If there were no deadline, she might have been able to continue deceiving herself.

But with a deadline, and once it passed, it would be a cycle of hope and despair.

She could… no longer deceive herself.

"I really…"

Click!

Suddenly, the door opened again.

"I've been thinking…"

Lin Yu returned, looking at Bai Wei, pausing slightly, then said, "Let's go together."

He really didn't know how to explain things.

So he thought, it would be better to let her see for herself.

"Go together… to do what?"

Bai Wei quickly raised her head, hastily and awkwardly wiping her nose, as if trying to brush away sand from her eyes.

"What do you think?"

Lin Yu glanced at her reddened eyes.

"Is… is it?"

Bai Wei trembled, a mixture of disbelief and a desperate hope washing over her.

"Something like that."

Lin Yu nodded. "Change into something more comfortable."

"Okay, okay."

The girl immediately sprang into action, as if afraid that any delay would change things, rushing to her room to change into sweatpants and a long-sleeved shirt.

When she came out, Lin Yu didn't say much, leading her directly to Rupert's clinic.

...

"Tsk, you actually came? I thought you were going to run away…"

Rupert, who was bent over writing something, felt the light being blocked and slightly raised his eyelids. Seeing Lin Yu, he clicked his tongue, then in a flat tone, continued writing while casually uttering sarcastic words:

"Almost forgot, you scum, desperate for medicine to stay alive, you can't even run away."

Sometimes, people are so strange.

Rupert was a contact person, or middleman, for the human trafficking organization, only responsible for connecting both sides and not directly involved.

But regardless, he couldn't escape the guilt and filth.

However, even though he could be said to be orchestrating this dirty trade, he always had a strange sense of superiority, always treating people like Lin Yu with disdain and sarcasm.

Perhaps to reduce his guilt, he pushed all the blame onto the 'suppliers' and 'buyers' in his heart?

A desperate need to prove that the guilt lay with others, so he could justify himself.

"Where's my medicine?"

Lin Yu had no time to guess another scumbag's mental journey, only standing in front of the desk, tapping his fingers on the surface.

Rupert frowned slightly, finally raising his head to look at Lin Yu, also noticing Bai Wei beside him, completely bewildered.

"Why bring the goods here directly?"

Seeing the girl, his brow furrowed even deeper: "And why is there only one?"

"Goods… goods?"

Bai Wei, seeing him look at her and say this, was already confused, and now she was shocked, her face turning pale.

"Tsk tsk, another naive fool you tricked with your face?"

Rupert seemed amused by the girl's reaction.

But more than targeting the girl, he was using it to mock Lin Yu, probably wanting to see him embarrassed.

If he had even a shred of conscience left, he would probably feel embarrassed and ashamed.

Unfortunately, he was disappointed.

Lin Yu's expression remained almost unchanged.

"It seems you're even more of a scumbag than I thought."

Rupert felt bored.

"No, you've misunderstood my intentions."

Lin Yu calmly raised his hand, a crudely made handgun already pressed against his forehead.

Without focusing on power and performance, making a makeshift gun was actually quite simple, especially for a mechatronics engineer proficient in mechanical structures.

And even the crudest firearm could easily pierce a fragile human body.

"What do you mean?"

Rupert finally turned pale with fright.

Bai Wei, who had already been pale and distraught, was even more distraught by this sudden turn of events.

"Isn't it obvious?"

Lin Yu pressed the gun closer.

"Cornered dog? Think carefully about the consequences of turning against the organization."

After the initial shock, Rupert quickly regained his composure, his voice sinking: "Your medicine has been intercepted by the higher-ups, it will be brought over with the transport team that will collect the goods."

Then, he changed his tone, speaking in a conciliatory manner: "How about this, let me go, and I'll personally expedite an order for you, and you can run away after you get it."

Lin Yu remained unmoved, simply saying calmly: "Those city corporations don't need to do this dirty work themselves. If I'm not mistaken, your so-called organization is just a Wasteland force responsible for supplying

goods. I want to know where your headquarters is located."

"You…"

Rupert's face showed astonishment, even more intense than when Lin Yu had suddenly pulled out the gun and pointed it at his head.

He looked at Lin Yu carefully, as if seeing him for the first time.
