Chereads / Bound By Midnight / Chapter 13 - 14. Shadows Rising

Chapter 13 - 14. Shadows Rising

The air was thick with an unnatural stillness, as if the very walls of the castle were holding their breath. The attack had passed, but its presence lingered, curling in the corners, watching, waiting.

Leila's body ached from where she had been thrown, but it was nothing compared to the weight pressing down on her chest. The whispers hadn't left her—not truly. They slithered through her thoughts, coiling around her memories like serpents waiting to strike.

She pressed a hand against the cold stone wall, grounding herself. Adrian stood beside her, his gaze locked onto the empty hallway ahead. Though his body had relaxed slightly, she could tell he was still listening, still watching for the next threat to appear.

She swallowed. "It's not over, is it?"

Adrian shook his head, golden eyes flickering in the dim light. "No. That was just the beginning."

A shiver ran down her spine. "Then what the hell was that?"

He hesitated, as if weighing his words. "Something old. Something that should not be here."

Leila narrowed her eyes. "But it knew you."

Adrian's jaw tightened. "Yes."

Silence stretched between them. She wanted answers, needed them, but there was something about the way Adrian stood—rigid, alert—that told her now wasn't the time to push.

Instead, she took a deep breath and forced herself to focus. "What do we do now?"

He turned toward her then, his expression unreadable. "We prepare."

Leila frowned. "For what?"

His eyes darkened. "For war."

The Gathering Storm

They moved through the castle corridors in tense silence. The torches along the walls flickered weakly, as if struggling against some unseen force.

Adrian led the way, his stride purposeful, every step filled with controlled power. Leila followed, her heart hammering against her ribs. She hated the silence, the way it made everything feel more real, more dangerous.

After what felt like an eternity, they reached a massive wooden door reinforced with iron. Adrian pushed it open, revealing a dimly lit chamber beyond. The scent of aged parchment and burning incense filled the air.

Inside, several figures stood waiting.

Leila's breath caught as she took in the sight of them—men and women cloaked in deep crimson, their faces partially obscured by shadows. Their presence radiated power, an aura that sent an involuntary chill through her veins.

A man stepped forward, his silver hair glinting in the candlelight. His eyes—sharp and piercing—locked onto Adrian. "You've been reckless."

Adrian didn't flinch. "I did what needed to be done."

The silver-haired man's gaze flickered to Leila. "And her?"

Adrian stepped slightly in front of her. "She's under my protection."

A murmur rippled through the gathered figures. Leila stiffened.

The man's lips pressed into a thin line. "Do you have any idea what you've done?"

Adrian's eyes gleamed. "I know exactly what I've done."

The tension in the room was suffocating. Leila could feel it pressing against her skin, a silent war being waged with unspoken words.

Finally, the silver-haired man sighed. "The Covenant will not be pleased."

Adrian smirked. "The Covenant never is."

Leila glanced between them. "What Covenant?"

Adrian didn't answer, but the silver-haired man did. "The ones who govern our kind." His gaze darkened. "And they will demand blood for this."

Blood Oaths and Secrets

The meeting continued for what felt like hours. The cloaked figures spoke in hushed, clipped tones, their words heavy with warning. Adrian remained unmoved, his expression cold, unreadable.

Leila listened, trying to piece together the fragments of information being exchanged. Words like 'prophecy,' 'balance,' and 'forbidden' echoed in her mind, filling her with a growing sense of unease.

Finally, the silver-haired man turned to her directly. "You should not be here."

She squared her shoulders. "And yet, here I am."

His eyes flickered with something—amusement, perhaps—but it was gone just as quickly. "Then you must understand something." He took a step closer. "You are a disruption. An anomaly." His voice softened, but there was an edge to it. "And disruptions do not go unnoticed."

Leila's mouth went dry.

Adrian's hand brushed against hers, a silent reassurance. "She stays."

The silver-haired man exhaled. "Then you must be ready to fight for her."

Adrian's lips curled into a dangerous smile. "I already have."

The Calm Before the Storm

After the meeting, Adrian led Leila through a winding passageway that opened into a private chamber. The fire crackling in the hearth cast long shadows across the stone walls.

Leila collapsed onto a chair, exhaling sharply. "That was intense."

Adrian poured a glass of dark liquid and handed it to her. "Drink."

She eyed it warily. "What is it?"

"A mixture to help strengthen you."

She took a hesitant sip, surprised by the warmth that spread through her. The tension in her muscles eased slightly.

Adrian watched her for a moment before speaking. "You should rest."

She scoffed. "Rest? After what just happened?"

He crouched beside her, his gaze holding hers. "You need to be strong for what's coming."

Something in his voice made her pause. He wasn't just speaking of physical strength.

Her fingers tightened around the glass. "What aren't you telling me?"

Adrian exhaled, his expression shadowed. "This fight… it's bigger than you realize."

She swallowed hard. "Then tell me."

He hesitated before finally speaking. "The entity that attacked us—it wasn't just a shadow. It was a harbinger."

Her pulse quickened. "A harbinger of what?"

Adrian's golden eyes burned into hers. "Of war."

The room suddenly felt too small, the fire too dim.

Leila took a shaky breath. "Then we fight."

A flicker of something crossed Adrian's face—pride, perhaps. But beneath it, there was something else.

Something that looked a lot like fear.
