Chapter 1 - The Hunt Begins

The forest was alive with the whispers of the wind and the rustling of leaves. The moon, full and bright, cast an ethereal glow over the towering pines. The air carried the scent of earth and the faint metallic tang of blood—fresh blood. Kiran tightened his grip on his bow as he crouched low behind a thicket, his sharp eyes scanning the clearing ahead.

Kiran wasn't an ordinary hunter. At twenty-five, his reputation for taking down beasts that no one else dared to face had earned him both fame and fear in the kingdom of Arvania. But tonight's hunt was different. This was not just about skill or pride. It was personal.

The beast, a creature of legend known as the Varaksha, had been terrorizing villages on the outskirts of the kingdom. Rumors painted it as a monstrous hybrid—part wolf, part dragon, with scales that shimmered like molten gold and eyes that glowed crimson in the dark. Its roar could shatter stone, and its claws could tear through steel. But to Kiran, it wasn't just a legend. It was the creature that had destroyed his village and left him as the sole survivor when he was just a boy.

Tonight, he would end it.

The forest grew silent, an unnatural stillness that made the hair on the back of Kiran's neck stand up. He adjusted the quiver on his back and pulled an arrow from it, its tip coated with a toxin brewed by the kingdom's best alchemists. It was said to paralyze even the fiercest of beasts.

A faint growl echoed through the trees, low and guttural. Kiran's heart pounded in his chest, but his hands remained steady. He nocked the arrow, his muscles taut as he prepared to draw.

The growl grew louder, accompanied by the sound of heavy footsteps crunching the forest floor. Then, it appeared.

The Varaksha stepped into the clearing, its massive form illuminated by the moonlight. The legends hadn't done it justice. Its scales seemed to ripple like liquid fire, and its wings, though folded against its back, stretched high above its head. Its eyes, glowing like twin suns, locked onto Kiran's hiding spot as though it could see straight through the foliage.

Kiran froze. The beast was more magnificent and terrifying than he had imagined. For a moment, he hesitated. Could he really kill something so powerful?

But then the memories came flooding back—the screams of his family, the flames consuming his village, the weight of his father's bloodied hand in his own. His jaw tightened, and his resolve returned.

Kiran drew the bowstring back, the arrow aimed at the creature's heart. He waited for the perfect moment, every nerve in his body focused on the hunt.

The Varaksha took a step closer, its nostrils flaring as it sniffed the air. Kiran released the arrow.

The weapon flew true, streaking through the air with deadly precision. But just as it was about to strike, the Varaksha twisted its body with impossible speed, the arrow glancing off its scales and embedding itself in a tree.

Before Kiran could react, the beast lunged.

He rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the swipe of its claws. The ground where he had been crouching was torn apart, chunks of earth flying through the air. Kiran scrambled to his feet, drawing another arrow as he backed away.

The Varaksha snarled, its wings unfurling in a show of dominance. It looked at Kiran with something almost like curiosity, as if it was wondering why this tiny human dared to challenge it.

Kiran loosed another arrow, this time aiming for the beast's eye. The Varaksha swatted it away with a claw, its movements almost lazy.

"This isn't going as planned," Kiran muttered under his breath.

The beast lunged again, its jaws snapping shut inches from his face. Kiran ducked and rolled, his mind racing. He couldn't outmatch it in strength or speed, but perhaps he could outsmart it.

He reached into his pouch and pulled out a small vial. The liquid inside was a volatile explosive, another gift from the kingdom's alchemists. Kiran threw it at the beast's feet, the vial shattering on impact. Flames erupted, engulfing the Varaksha in a fiery explosion.

For a moment, Kiran thought he had won. But as the smoke cleared, the beast emerged, unharmed. Its scales glimmered with an unearthly light, the fire seeming to dance across its body without causing any harm.

The Varaksha growled, a deep, resonant sound that made the ground tremble. It stepped closer, and Kiran realized he had run out of options.

As the beast loomed over him, Kiran braced himself for the end. But then, something unexpected happened.

The Varaksha paused. Its glowing eyes softened, and it tilted its head as if studying him. Kiran's breath caught in his throat as he met the creature's gaze.

In that moment, he saw something he hadn't expected—intelligence.

The beast let out a low rumble, almost like a sigh, and stepped back. Kiran stared in disbelief as it turned and began to walk away.

"Wait!" he called out, his voice hoarse.

The Varaksha stopped but didn't turn around.

"Why didn't you kill me?" Kiran asked, his voice trembling.

The beast looked over its shoulder, its eyes meeting his once more. Then, without a sound, it spread its massive wings and took to the sky, disappearing into the night.

Kiran sank to his knees, his bow falling from his hands. His heart was pounding, but not from fear. For the first time, he questioned everything he had believed about the creature.

This wasn't just a mindless beast. There was more to it—something deeper, something he couldn't yet understand.

As he sat there in the clearing, the moonlight bathing him in its glow, Kiran made a silent vow. He would uncover the truth about the Varaksha, no matter what it took.

But he couldn't shake the feeling that his life had just changed forever.
