Chapter 1 - Prologue: Apotheosis

There it was, lying before me; a disgusting creature of flesh, bone, and sinew, lodged into the deep slate rock of the cavernous chamber wherein I stood - it's body, impossibly large, now revealed in form. This was it, yes. This abomination of which I had spent two days and two nights digging out of clay, would be the path to my apotheosis.

Organic tissue, knitted into a perfect mass, it's flesh coursing with power, resonating with the faint beating of it's heart. A thing of the fathoms - or at least it's corpse, slowly rotting away, buried under the weight of the earth - A disgraceful place for a God. It Spoke.

"PLEASE. PLEASE. KILL IT."

"Quiet, beast."

I approached it, unsheathing my obsidian dagger, cutting a piece from it, fresh blood pouring from its thousand wounds. It let out a howl of pain, the chamber trembling in protest.

"KILL IT. KILL IT. KILL IT. KILL IT. KILL IT. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE."

"QUIET!" I roared back.

"It is in your foul nature, beast, that you will enslave others. Power is inherent to your very kind. You can only destroy. You will never be free."

I took the piece of flesh still twitching in my hand and placed it in my mouth, swallowing it.

"And so I will eat from you, and your unsightly power will be instead transformed into new and prosperous life, with the coming of my new kingdom."

I dig my dagger into it once more.

"AURGHH-PLEASE! KILL IT. END IT AND IT WILL GIVE FLESH. AS MUCH AS YOU NEED.

"No. You must suffer."

I carved out piece after piece, eating as I went. With every bite, it felt as though thousands of years of knowledge, souls, and worlds were crashing down upon me, all at once.

"O-OTHERS BEFORE YOU. THEY HAVE TAKEN SO MUCH."

"YOU. YOU HAVE ALREADY TAKEN SO, SO MUCH."

"It's not enough."

"WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE-"

"ALL OF IT!" I growled. "I will take away all of your accursed flesh, beast."

The disgusting thing let out a cry of anguish. "SPEAK.. THY NAME."

"I am Ebenholm, God-King of New Aethelea"

"THEN I CURSE YOU, EBENHOLM, GOD-KING OF NEW AETHELEA. FOR EVERY LIFETIME YOU LIVE, CURSES. CURSES BE UPON YOU."
