Chereads / Mafia System: Return of the Leader / Chapter 11 - The Ghost of Secrets

Chapter 11 - The Ghost of Secrets

A quiet night enveloped the "Abyss" district, but the industrial area had never been a place for true tranquility. Flickering neon lights cast trembling shadows over the dirty alleys, while puddles of water reflected the faces of passersby—or rather, the faces of hunters and prey in the deadly mafia game. Will, with his calm features and cold eyes behind his glasses, stood before the mysterious man who hid his face behind a simple black mask.

"Who are you?" Will asked in a low voice, sharp as a blade. The man didn't move, only a faint smile appeared beneath the mask.

"Wrong question, Will. The right question is: What do I have?"

Will raised an eyebrow, though he showed no clear surprise. "And I'm supposed to care?"

The man chuckled softly. "Edgar's journals. The originals."

In that moment, the air around them grew tense. Edgar, the man who was killed before revealing the truth to Will, had left behind journals? How? And where?

"Liar," Will said, though his heart pounded fiercely.

The man stepped closer. "You know I'm not."

Jack, who stood quietly behind Will, gripped the handle of a hidden knife in his jacket. "If this is a trick, I'll slit your throat."

The man smiled again. "I didn't ask you to believe me now. Just… follow me, if you can."

In the blink of an eye, he threw a small smoke bomb and vanished into the darkness, leaving behind hundreds of questions… and Will, who felt the weight of secrets growing heavier by the day.

In a secret basement under an old warehouse in the "Abyss," members of the "The Phoenix" mafia sat around a long table. Ethan, with his massive build and light beard, drummed his fingers impatiently on the table.

"Who is this bastard? And why does he have Edgar's journals?" he asked in a gruff voice.

Louis, his glasses reflecting the light of the lamps, replied calmly, "If what he says is true, this is a disaster. Edgar knew too much about the mafia's past… and about Will."

Jack, slicing an apple with his small knife, smirked. "Will, what do you think?"

Will, leaning against the wall with his hands clasped, replied coldly, "If he has the journals, we'll take them. And if he's lying… there won't be a next time for him to lie."

Ethan laughed loudly. "That's what I like to hear."

But Louis was more cautious. "We need a plan. The other mafias are starting to move. The Blue Shadow won't stay quiet for long."

Jack, sarcastically, said, "Always fighting, huh? Alright, where do we start?"

Will, adjusting his glasses quietly, replied, "We start at the industrial district. We'll burn the ground until we find him."

At that moment, the tension in the room rose, as everyone knew the real war hadn't started yet… but it was closer than ever.

In his dark room, Will sat in his leather chair, holding an old photo with a slight tremor in his hand. The photo showed him with Edgar, and another man… his face torn from the picture, but etched in Will's memory. The one who betrayed him… and killed him.

"Why are you always in the shadows? Even after your death?" Will whispered to himself.

The ringing phone cut through his thoughts. It was Louis.

"Will, we got information. The masked man… was seen at the old port."

"I'll go alone."

"What? No, that's dangerous—"

But Will ended the call.

Alone in the streets, Will walked slowly, reviewing every detail of the past. Each step brought him closer to the truth, but also dragged him toward an abyss he wasn't sure he could escape.

On a nearby rooftop, two eyes watched him through a sniper scope.

"Will… you're still the same."

The masked man, smiling beneath his mask, observed his prey—who was becoming a hunter day by day.

Will arrived at the old port, where the cold wind whistled between the rusty metal containers. His steps were quiet but deliberate. He didn't trust anyone—not even himself sometimes.

"If you're here… show yourself," he said in a low voice, but his echo resonated between the containers.

Silence… then the sound of slow footsteps.

"Faster than I expected," said the masked man, sitting on one of the containers with obvious nonchalance.

"The journals," Will said directly, narrowing his eyes.

The man smiled. "I like your bluntness, but nothing comes for free."

"What do you want?"

"I want you to take down the 'Blue Shadow' mafia."

Will chuckled softly, but without humor. "Not my problem."

"Oh, but it will be… very soon."

Before Will could respond, their conversation was cut short by the sound of gunfire.

Jack, from a nearby position, shouted, "It's an ambush!"

One of the containers exploded, covering the area in dust.

"See you soon," the masked man whispered, vanishing as usual.

Will, along with Jack, Ethan, and Louis, found themselves surrounded by Blue Shadow's men, guns aimed at them.

"Looks like it's going to be a long night…" Jack said with a grin as he drew his weapon.

The gunfire began, echoing across the dark port. Jack, as quick as ever, leapt behind a container and fired with deadly precision.

"I hate when I'm right!" Jack shouted sarcastically.

Ethan, with his metal shield and heavy weapon, bulldozed through the enemies like a raging beast. "Where's their leader? Let me smash his face!"

Louis, with his usual calm, fired silenced shots from his pistol, hitting each target with meticulous care.

Will, amidst the chaos, remained calm. His movements were fluid, and his gun felt like an extension of his hand. But his mind raced… Why did the masked man want Blue Shadow taken down?

"Will! Behind you!" Jack yelled.

Will spun quickly, firing a bullet straight between the eyes of an attacker behind him.

"Thanks, Jack."

"Always at your service, boss," Jack replied with a side grin.

At that moment, a whistle echoed… and Blue Shadow's men suddenly retreated.

"What?" Ethan asked angrily.

"It's a message…" Will whispered.

On the ground, there was a small note: "We'll be back… with the truth."

Will clenched the note, his eyes glinting with deadly resolve.

"Let them try."

In The Phoenix's hideout, everyone stood around the table, analyzing what had happened.

Louis typed quickly on the computer. "They hacked our system… They know our moves."

Ethan shouted, "We have a traitor!"

Jack added sarcastically, "And here begins the game of 'Who's the spy?'… Wonderful."

Will, with a deadly calm, said, "We'll find them."

But deep inside, doubt began to creep in.

Could one of his closest allies be the traitor?

He looked at Jack, Louis, Ethan… No, he had to stay confident.

But in the shadows, someone watched through a screen, smiling.

"Let the game begin…" whispered the mysterious figure as the screen flickered through images of Louis, Jack, and Ethan, one by one.

In a dark room inside the hideout, Will sat alone, staring at photos of his mafia members on the wall. He knew one of them was hiding something—but who?

The system suddenly opened his mind with a calm voice: "You must be careful… Your enemies are not only outside."

Will smiled bitterly. "I know."

Jack entered without knocking, holding a cup of hot coffee. "You think too much… That might kill you before the enemies do."

"And you? You don't seem worried."

"Me? I'm always worried… I'm just good at hiding it."

Will took a sip of Jack's coffee. "We have to move before they do."

"I have an idea… but it's crazy."

"I love crazy."

Jack grinned. "We won't wait for them to attack us… We'll strike first."

Will chuckled softly. "An attack on Blue Shadow? I like it."

But in his mind, he knew that attacking wasn't the only solution… He had to find out who was betraying him first.

In a small apartment on the outskirts of New Orvita, Ruby, the detective, sat in front of a wall covered with photos of mafia leaders.

"The Phoenix… Who the hell are you?" she whispered to herself.

Her phone rang. It was her chief's voice: "Ruby, we have a new crime… seems connected to the gangs."

"I'm on my way."

But she didn't know that her next move would soon put her in direct confrontation with Will.

Meanwhile, Will stood on the rooftop of a tall building, watching the city lights.

"The game has begun, hasn't it?" he whispered to himself.

Ethan joined him. "When do we start the attack?"

"Very soon…" Will replied, his eyes filled with unbreakable determination.

In an abandoned district on the city's edge, the Blue Shadow leaders gathered in an old building.

"Will has started to move…" one of them said.

Their leader, a man with eyes cold as ice, smiled wickedly. "Let him come… We'll be waiting."

In the hideout, Will prepared his team.

"This isn't an ordinary fight," Ethan said.

"No, this is war," Jack added with a sarcastic grin.

Louis adjusted his glasses and said, "I'm ready."

Will looked at them and smiled for the first time in a long while. "Let's finish what we started."

But in his mind, the system's words echoed: "Your past… will come back to haunt you."

"Let it try," he whispered to himself as the city's shadows prepared to explode.
