One day, a serpent—who was actually Satan in disguise—approached Eve and deceived her, saying, "If you eat from that tree, you will become like God, knowing both good and evil."
At first, Eve hesitated, but eventually, she took the fruit and ate it. She then offered it to Adam, who initially refused, but Eve persuaded him until he took a bite. As soon as they ate, their eyes were opened, and they realized they were naked. Filled with shame, they covered themselves with leaves and hid from God.
When God came looking for them, He already knew what had happened. Adam blamed Eve, and Eve blamed the serpent. Because of their disobedience, God pronounced judgment upon them:
To Adam, He said, "You will have to toil and labor for your food all the days of your life. "To Eve, He said, "You will experience great pain in childbirth, and your desire will be for your husband. "To the serpent, He said, "You will crawl on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life."
Adam and Eve were then cast out of the Garden of Eden, and humanity began to experience suffering, sin, and death.
