Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Trial of will

Tolu stood at the edge of the gorge, staring down at the raging river below. The waters churned violently, crashing against jagged rocks that jutted out like the fangs of a beast. The other side of the cliff was high and steep, almost mocking in its challenge. A fall meant certain death.

Behind him, his pack stood in tense silence. Jide, Kemi, Ope, and Jimi—they had fought beside him through every battle, but this was his test alone.

Adetokunbo, the Alpha of the Palam Pack, crossed his arms as he observed him. "To lead is to struggle. Strength alone does not make a leader. You must learn to endure, to think, and to overcome without relying on your wolf."

Tolu exhaled, clenching his fists.

This trial wasn't just about getting to the other side—it was about proving he was worthy of reclaiming his birthright.

He studied the gorge carefully. Jumping across was impossible, and the waters below were too violent to swim. That left only one option—he had to climb.

His gaze landed on a gnarled tree near the cliff's edge, its thick roots extending outward like grasping fingers. A vine hung from one of its branches, swaying gently in the wind. It wasn't perfect, but it was his best chance.

Without hesitation, Tolu sprinted forward, grabbing the vine with both hands. His arms burned as he hoisted himself up, the rough texture scraping against his palms.

With a deep breath, he swung forward.

The wind rushed past him, the world blurring as he soared through the air. For a moment, it felt like he wasn't going to make it.

Then—his feet touched rock.

He staggered, nearly slipping, but forced himself upright. He had done it.

A faint smirk played on Adetokunbo's lips. "Good," he said. "But it's not over yet."

Before Tolu could react, the ground beneath him shifted.

A hidden pressure plate clicked—then the ledge crumbled.

His stomach dropped.

He fell.

A Test of Strength

Tolu's hands shot out, desperately clawing at the rock as he tumbled downward. His fingers scraped against the stone, but there was nothing to grab onto.

The river below roared, eager to claim him.

No.

With a final effort, he twisted midair and flung his hand toward a narrow crack in the cliffside. His fingers barely caught the edge, pain shooting up his arm as his body jerked to a halt.

His muscles screamed, his grip slipping.

Above him, Adetokunbo watched in silence, his expression unreadable.

Tolu gritted his teeth. He wouldn't die here.

Ignoring the burn in his arms, he reached up, grabbing another crevice in the rock. Slowly, painstakingly, he began to climb.

Every inch felt like a battle. Sweat dripped down his face, his breathing ragged. His fingers trembled, the strain unbearable—but he refused to stop.

He reached for another handhold—only for the rock to break away.

His stomach lurched as he slipped, but at the last second, he managed to hook his foot into a crevice, halting his fall.

He gasped for air. No mistakes.

Summoning the last of his strength, he climbed higher, inch by inch.

Finally—his hand grasped the ledge.

With a final pull, he heaved himself over the edge, collapsing onto solid ground. His chest heaved, his arms trembling.

He had done it.

Adetokunbo nodded approvingly. "Now you understand," he said. "A leader is not just strong. A leader endures."

Tolu forced himself to stand, despite the burning pain in his body. He met the Alpha's gaze with unwavering determination.

"I will take back what's mine," he said firmly.

A slow smile spread across Adetokunbo's face. "Then you have my warriors."

---

Preparing for War

Tolu and his pack stood at the heart of the Palam Pack's village, surrounded by warriors. Unlike before, these weren't skeptical strangers—they were allies.

Adetokunbo raised his voice. "The time of peace is over. Olumide's ambition threatens us all. Today, we stand with the rightful heir."

A chorus of agreement rippled through the warriors.

Tolu stepped forward. "Olumide won't stop until he rules everything. But together, we can stop him."

A tall warrior with battle scars knelt before Tolu. "I pledge my strength to you."

Another followed. Then another.

Tolu's heart pounded. He was no longer just a fugitive. He was a leader.

The war had begun.

---

Meanwhile, in Olumide's Territory…

Deep within his stronghold, Olumide sat in his chamber, his golden eyes flickering with irritation. A scout knelt before him, trembling.

"They've allied with the Palam Pack," the scout reported.

Olumide's fingers tapped against the armrest of his chair. He had underestimated the boy.

A deep chuckle rumbled from the shadows. "It seems your nephew is more resourceful than you thought."

Olumide didn't turn. He knew who it was. A tall, lean warrior with cruel eyes stepped forward, his expression unreadable.

"Shall we deal with them?" the warrior asked.

Olumide smirked. "Not yet. Let them think they have the upper hand."

His gaze darkened.

"Let's remind Tolu why he should have stayed in hiding."

The storm was coming.

And this time, no one would escape it.

The Gathering Storm

As Tolu stood among the warriors of the Palam Pack, he felt the weight of responsibility settle on his shoulders. These men and women weren't just fighting for him—they were fighting for their future.

Adetokunbo stepped forward, his sharp gaze sweeping across the crowd. "You all know what is at stake. Olumide's reign will not stop at his own pack—he seeks to control us all."

A murmur of agreement ran through the gathered warriors. Some clenched their fists, others bared their teeth in silent rage.

Tolu inhaled deeply, then spoke, his voice steady. "We won't let him take anything else from us. But we can't afford mistakes. We need a plan."

Adetokunbo nodded. "You have warriors now, but strategy wins wars. We will send scouts to monitor Olumide's movements. The moment he makes a move, we strike first."

Jimi, who had been silent until now, stepped forward. "What if he attacks first?"

A knowing smile touched Adetokunbo's lips. "Then we will be ready."

The warriors cheered, their voices shaking the trees.

Tolu clenched his fists. This wasn't just about reclaiming his birthright anymore. It was about survival. About proving that he was strong enough to lead.

And he wouldn't fail.

The time for running was over.

Now, they would fight.
