Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The First Test

---

The creature that stepped from the shadows was unlike anything Tolu had ever seen. It stood over eight feet tall, its skin a sickly green that seemed to glisten with moisture. Its muscles bulged grotesquely under its leathery hide, and its eyes, glowing an eerie yellow, locked onto Tolu with unsettling focus.

A chill ran down his spine, but he didn't back down. He could feel the wolf within him stirring, its primal instincts kicking in as his body tensed in preparation for the coming fight. The creature before him was no ordinary beast. It was a test—one that would show whether he had the strength to master the power within him or if he would falter like so many others before him.

"You've trained your mind, your body, and your spirit," Elder Durojaiye's voice echoed in his mind, steady and calm. "But now, you must face the true challenge. This creature is not of the earth, but a creature of the night—a manifestation of darkness that feeds on fear. You must learn to control your fear if you are to stand a chance."

Tolu's heart raced in his chest, but he drew in a steadying breath. Fear was something he had grown familiar with—fear of the unknown, fear of his uncle, and fear of his own power. But now, he had to face it head-on.

The creature lunged forward with terrifying speed, its claws slashing through the air like daggers. Tolu barely had time to react, his instincts kicking in as he sidestepped just in time. The beast's claws raked across the ground, sending dirt flying into the air, but Tolu was already moving.

He dropped into a crouch, his muscles coiling with tension as he summoned his power. The wolf inside him roared, its strength and speed flowing into him like a torrent. He could feel the animal instincts guiding him, sharpening his reflexes and focusing his mind.

With a growl, Tolu surged forward, his own claws extending as he met the creature head-on. Their claws clashed in a shower of sparks, the force of the impact shaking the ground beneath them. The creature snarled, its glowing eyes narrowing as it pressed forward, but Tolu wasn't giving up so easily.

He pushed against the creature, his strength fueling the fight. It was overwhelming, the sheer power of the beast pushing him back, but Tolu's resolve held firm. He was no longer the scared boy who had run from his fate. He was the son of an alpha, the rightful heir to a pack that had been stolen from him, and he would not let this creature stand in his way.

The battle raged on, a brutal clash of claws and strength, but Tolu's confidence grew with each passing moment. He could feel the connection between himself and the wolf deepening, the power within him growing stronger as he fought.

But the creature was relentless, its strength seeming to match his own. It was like fighting against a shadow—an enemy that knew no mercy and no end. Tolu's body ached from the blows, his breath coming in ragged gasps, but he couldn't afford to stop. Not now. Not when everything he had trained for had led him to this moment.

With a final roar, the creature lunged at him, its claws aimed for his throat. Tolu's instincts flared, and in a flash, he twisted his body, narrowly avoiding the blow. He countered with a strike of his own, his claws raking across the creature's side, leaving deep gashes in its hide.

The creature howled in pain, but it wasn't finished. It turned to face him once more, its eyes burning with fury.

Tolu was tired—his body screamed for rest—but he knew that now was not the time to falter. He couldn't afford to lose. He could feel the power within him, his connection to the earth, to the wolf, and to the legacy of his father. It was all leading up to this moment.

He raised his hand, calling on the energy within him. The earth beneath his feet seemed to respond, the ground vibrating with an ancient power as the air grew thick with tension.

The creature hesitated for a moment, sensing the change in the atmosphere. But it was too late. Tolu's roar tore through the air, a deep, primal sound that seemed to shake the very earth beneath them.

With that roar, the power within him surged forward, and the creature was caught in the blast. Tolu's eyes glowed with an otherworldly light as the creature was thrown back, its form disintegrating into the darkness from which it came. The roar faded, leaving behind only the echoes of its power.

Tolu stood there, panting heavily, his body trembling from the intensity of the fight. The air around him was still, the silence deafening in its aftermath.

"You did well," Durojaiye's voice broke through the silence, and Tolu turned to face the elder. The old man stood in the shadows, his expression unreadable as he watched Tolu.

Tolu wiped the sweat from his brow, his heart still racing from the fight. "What… what was that?" he asked, his voice hoarse.

Durojaiye's eyes softened, though there was a glimmer of approval in his gaze. "That was your first true test. The creatures of the night are not mere beasts. They are born of darkness and fear, and they feed on weakness. You must learn to overcome them, or they will destroy you."

Tolu nodded, the weight of the elder's words sinking in. He had won this fight, but it was only the beginning. There would be more tests, more creatures, and more challenges ahead. But for the first time, Tolu felt something stir within him—an understanding that the path he walked was his own to choose.

"I'm ready for whatever comes next," he said, his voice steady now, his confidence growing.

Durojaiye smiled, a rare look of pride crossing his face. "You have come far, Tolu. But remember, strength is not the only thing you will need. You will need wisdom, and above all, you will need to trust in the wolf that lives inside you."

Tolu nodded, his mind already racing ahead to the next challenge. He had passed his first test, but the journey was far from over. And he was ready to face whatever lay ahead.
