Chapter 1 - Good Bye Mother

Gamvik Norway, 1932

The cold air was stifling. It was hard to even breath, the dress and thin tattered jacket that she had wasn't enough to keep her warm. She wasn't able to afford clothes for her, or her younger sister. All because of her mother. Her mother was sick and even though she was only 16 she had to work countless jobs and spend all the little money she earned on her mothers medicine. The stuff doesn't even work, she thought. She didn't love her mother. There's nothing to love about a sickly old woman who stays in bed 24/7 and doesn't even have the money to afford enough food and warmth for her 16 and 14 year old daughters. She should be ashamed of herself, forcing her child to work such long jobs when she doesn't even have the appropriate clothing to leave the house. "There's no such use in spending all of my money on my mother. She will just die soon anyway I ought to put her out of her misery." "Oh really? Now that's a dark thought for one so young." She quickly turns to face the man behind her. He is far too handsome to harbor any kindness. With a face like that he must be evil, she thinks. "What do you want from me? How shameful, what gives you the right to listen in on me?" The man smirks. How arrogant this woman is. She is as arrogant as beautiful, though she looks as if she hasn't eaten in days, and it's far too cold to be wearing such thin clothes. "I apologize for my rudeness, I just happened to be passing by and heard you say such things. Do you intend to murder your mother?" He probably attends to alert the authorities if I agree, she thinks. "No. I was simply saying such things in the heat of the moment." The man looked at her awhile, what a liar, he thought. "I see, that's quite disappointing, this village has nothing entertaining going on within its walls. Well then, I bid you good day." With that the man turns and walks away smiling. What? She wonders what that man could have possibly meant by that. She thinks for a while. Will I really kill my mother? She asks. It wasn't that she had any close bonds or special feelings such as love for her sister, but they could both live a better life if her mother was gone. She could for sure live a better life if her sister was gone as well but no, she would only kill her mother, besides her sister also suffered because of her mother and maybe she was doing the right thing, putting her out of her misery. Her mother was constantly in pain anyway. It was friday, which means it was the day she would receive her paycheck after work. It was also the day when it was time to refill on her mothers medicine, for she could only afford to get a week's worth at a time. I doubt I have enough to buy a poison that would actually kill her. Then she remembered, her mother was allergic to shellfish. She smiled to herself, she doesn't have enough to buy cooked shrimp, but since a pound would be about 60% of the money she would get, she could buy it and cook it for her mother. She heads off to work with her mind set and new determination. One would usually feel bad, who could possibly smile when thinking of ways to kill their own birth mother. Maybe it was just her, maybe she was born insane. But if her mother wasn't so sick, she could have afford the time and money to get her checked out. Neyruh was her name. It was hung as a curse on her because her deceased father named her before she was born. Neyruh's mother once told her that before they got married, they used to joke around about baby names and that her father said Neyruh. They laughed at the horrid spelling. Times like that were her mother's favorite. The fact that her mother actually ended up giving her that name only angered Neyruh more. Her mother has to be insane. Even her younger sister Amalie, used to make fun of her name, saying the way it was spelled looks like someone was drunk. Her name, by the way it is pronounced, should be spelled Nayrah. That would be a beautiful name, it means graceful and intelligent. If at least her mother changed the spelling and told her the joke, maybe her hatred for her mother would go down, just a bit. Though it would not be enough to change her mind about killing her, for that she had already decided, and unless some miracle came, which either made them rich, or made her mother well again, there was nothing that could change her mind. For as insane as she might be, she will always stick to her word.Â
