Chapter 3 - CHAPTER THREE

Ava and Ryan left the chief's office, their minds racing with the new information.

"What do you think is going on?" Ryan asked, his voice low.

Ava's eyes scanned the hallway, ensuring they were alone. "I think there's more to Richard Langley's murder than we're being told. The chief's behavior, the mayor's office involvement... it all seems too convenient."

Ryan nodded, his expression serious. "You think it's a cover-up?"

Ava's jaw clenched. "I don't know, but I aim to find out. Let's dig deeper into Langley's background, see if we can uncover any secrets."

As they walked back to their desks, Ava's phone buzzed. She answered, listening intently to the voice on the other end.

Ryan raised an eyebrow. "What is it?"

Ava's eyes locked onto his. "It's the ME's office. They've finished processing the evidence from Langley's office."

Ryan's eyes widened. "What did they find?"

"The ME's office found a hidden safe in Langley's office," Ava said, her voice barely above a whisper. "And inside, they found a cryptic message that reads: 'Eclipse is coming'."

Ryan's eyes narrowed. "Eclipse? What does that even mean?"

Ava's mind was racing. "I don't know, but I think it's connected to the Shadow Killer's motives. We need to dig deeper into Langley's business dealings, see if we can find any connections to this 'Eclipse'."

Just then, Ava's computer beeped, signaling an incoming email. She opened it, her eyes scanning the message.

"What is it?" Ryan asked, noticing Ava's expression.

Ava's eyes locked onto his. "It's an anonymous email. The sender claims to have information about the Shadow Killer... and they want to meet with me in person."

Ava's heart skipped a beat as she read the email again. The sender had chosen a public place for the meeting, a coffee shop in the heart of the city.

Ryan's eyes widened as he read the email over Ava's shoulder. "Do you think it's legit?"

Ava's mind was racing. "I don't know, but I have to take the chance. This could be our only lead."

Ryan nodded. "I'll come with you, for backup."

Ava shook her head. "No, I need you to dig deeper into Langley's business dealings. See if you can find any connections to this 'Eclipse'."

Ryan nodded, but his eyes showed concern. "Be careful, Ava."

Ava smiled, trying to reassure him. "I will."

She grabbed her gun and headed out the door, her heart pounding with anticipation. What would she find out at the meeting? And who was the mysterious sender?

Ava walked into the coffee shop, scanning the crowded room for any sign of her mysterious contact. She spotted a figure sitting in the corner, hood up and face obscured.

Ava's instincts kicked in, her hand resting on her gun. She approached the table cautiously, her eyes locked on the figure.

"Mind if I join you?" Ava asked, her voice firm but controlled.

The figure nodded, pushing back its hood to reveal a shocking sight...

Ava's eyes widened as she took in the sight of her mysterious contact. It was a woman, with piercing green eyes and long, curly brown hair. But what shocked Ava was the woman's face - it was a face she knew, a face she had seen before.

"Emily?" Ava asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Emily Wilson?"

The woman nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. "It's been a long time, Ava."

Ava's mind was reeling. Emily Wilson was a former FBI agent, one who had gone rogue several years ago. Ava had worked with Emily on a case, and she had thought Emily was dead.

"What do you want, Emily?" Ava asked, her hand still resting on her gun.

Emily leaned forward, her eyes glinting with intensity. "I want to help you catch the Shadow Killer, Ava. I have information that can help you."

Here's the next part:

"I'm listening," Ava said, her eyes locked on Emily's.

Emily glanced around the coffee shop, ensuring they were not being overheard. "The Shadow Killer is not working alone," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "They have a partner, someone who is helping them plan and execute these murders."

Ava's eyes narrowed. "Who is it?"

Emily hesitated, as if unsure whether to reveal the information. "It's someone close to the investigation," she said finally. "Someone you trust."

Ava's mind was racing. Who could it be? Ryan? Chief Michaels? The thought sent a chill down her spine.

Ava's eyes locked onto Emily's, her grip on her gun tightening. "Who?" she demanded.

Emily's expression was grim. "I don't have concrete evidence, but I suspect it's Ryan Mitchell."

Ava's eyes widened in shock. Ryan? Her partner? She couldn't believe it.

"Why do you think it's Ryan?" Ava asked, trying to keep her emotions in check.

Emily leaned in closer. "I've been tracking the Shadow Killer's movements, and I noticed a pattern. Every time a murder occurs, Ryan is always nearby. And I mean always."

Ava's mind was racing. Was it possible? Could Ryan be involved in the murders?

Ava's eyes narrowed, her mind racing with possibilities. She couldn't believe that Ryan, her trusted partner, could be involved in the murders. But Emily's words had planted a seed of doubt in her mind.

"I need proof," Ava said, her voice firm. "I'm not going to accuse Ryan without concrete evidence."

Emily nodded. "I understand. But be careful, Ava. If Ryan is involved, he's not going to go down without a fight."

Ava's grip on her gun tightened. She was ready for whatever came next.

Just then, Ava's phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen and her heart skipped a beat. It was a text from Ryan.

"Meet me at the precinct," the text read. "I've found something big."

Ava's eyes locked onto Emily's. "It's Ryan," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "He wants me to meet him at the precinct."

Ava's instincts screamed at her to be cautious. She looked at Emily, who raised an eyebrow.

"Be careful," Emily mouthed.

Ava nodded and stood up, her eyes scanning the coffee shop to ensure they weren't being watched. She tucked her gun into her holster and headed out the door.

As she walked to the precinct, Ava's mind raced with possibilities. What had Ryan found? And was Emily's suspicion about his involvement in the murders true?

Ava's phone buzzed again, breaking her concentration. She glanced at the screen and saw a text from an unknown number.

"Trust no one," the text read.

Ava's heart skipped a beat. Who was sending her these cryptic messages? And what did they know about the case?
