Chapter 1 - Preface

The wheel is the most significant invention in history! Though we can't attribute its invention to any person, the wheel revolutionized transportation, allowing people to trade goods and travel more efficiently.

Talking about wheels here, I want to mention the bullock cart as my book title is about the journey of time through generations and how we evolved through the wheel of time, witnessing high-speed bullet trains, compared to the slow-paced bullock cart, which remains as the vestige of the past.

Many of us are familiar with the bullock cart as we read stories in books and saw images if not any direct experience. A bullock cart is a two-wheeled vehicle ā€“ pulled by cows, bulls or oxen. Bullock carts have been one of the primary forms of conveyance, not only as a way to travel around, close by or distant, but they have also enabled us to farm and help in other forms of trade.

This invention of the wheel led to many more advancements, such as the spinning wheel and the water wheel, and changed modern transportation drastically.

Ā In the 1970s and earlier times, weddings in significant parts of India involved gathering a fleet of bullock carts for both immediate and extended families. Typically, 10-12 bullock carts would be arranged for the wedding procession. In those days, families owning bullock carts were looked up with high esteem. These carts were essential to transport materials and manure to fields, bring back home harvested crops, cut grasses for livestock, collect firewood, and use in multiple other transportation work needed for households.

Ā However, today, the sight of bullock carts has become increasingly rare. Automobiles have gradually taken over the traditional modes of transportation. Bullock carts have become rarer and rarer, even in the rural parts of India. While one might occasionally come across a cart or two in the most rural parts of the country, you can only see them in the smaller towns. Some children have no idea about their existence altogether.

Ā But we have bullet trains in the news and posters everywhere, also as toys. And this is how pace takes up, and we embrace convenience over history.

Ā Bullock carts were prevalent in many parts of India and the world. They were simple, low-tech, and relied on animal power to move goods and people. Though they were effective in their time, they had several limitations, including slow speed, limited capacity, and the need for a lot of physical labor.

Ā Bullet trains are the epitome of speed. With advanced engineering and materials that can run at high speeds, often over 300 km/h, bullet trains can transport large numbers of passengers quickly and efficiently. They are also designed with comfort, safety, and environmental sustainability in mind.

Ā The shift from bullock carts to bullet trains signifies the evolution of both human civilization and technology. As societies advance and become more interconnected, there is a demand for swifter and better modes of transportation.

Ā The innovation and creation of bullet trains are pivotal in meeting this demand, as they offer a faster and more sustainable option compared to conventional bullock carts.

Ā The overall transition from bullock carts to bullet trains stands as a notable accomplishment in human innovation and progress and stands as a testament to the change and power of the interdisciplinary amalgam of science, engineering, and technology that is transforming our global landscape.
