The smell of simmering broth filled the air, a comforting fragrance that wrapped around Hana Takahashi like a warm blanket. She stood behind the counter of her small ramen shop, expertly stirring the pot as she hummed to herself. It had been a slow afternoon, the kind where customers trickled in one by one, each offering a smile and a kind word. Despite running the shop alone since her parents' accident, Hana had learned to find joy in the little things: the sound of the soup bubbling away, the clink of bowls being set down, and the laughter of her loyal customers.
But there was one customer, in particular, who had been on her mind lately.
Ryo Kobayashi.
He came in every day, right on the dot at noon, sat at his usual spot by the window, and ordered the same thing—tonkotsu ramen, extra spicy. He never said much, only a polite nod when she greeted him, but there was something about the way his dark eyes followed her movements that made her uneasy... and yet, strangely comforted.
"Another bowl, Ryo?" Hana asked, her voice breaking the quiet tension that had built up between them.
Ryo looked up from his bowl, his expression unreadable as always. "Yes, please," he replied in his usual calm, gravelly voice. There was a certain distance to him, as though he was always lost in thought, but he never failed to leave a generous tip.
Before Hana could turn to prepare his order, a loud crash sounded from the kitchen. She spun around to find her clumsy coworker, Kenta, tangled in a mess of ramen bowls and noodles, his face flushed in embarrassment.
"Oops... Sorry, Hana! I didn't mean to—" Kenta stammered, trying to pick up the broken dishes while managing to trip over his own feet. A few more bowls tipped over in the process.
Hana sighed and rubbed her temples. "Kenta, you need to be more careful!"
Kenta looked up sheepishly, one hand holding a wobbly stack of plates. "It's just... I was trying to help with the broth, but I... well, I guess it didn't go as planned."
"Again?" Hana muttered, but she couldn't help the faint smile tugging at her lips. "Just go stand by the counter and let me handle the cooking. You're more trouble than help in here today."
As Kenta clumsily shuffled to the counter, his foot caught the edge of a stool, sending him sprawling onto the floor with a loud thud. Hana bit her lip to stop herself from laughing.
Meanwhile, Mei, the sharp-tongued cashier and waitress, watched the whole thing with a mix of disdain and amusement from the register. "Honestly, Kenta, are you trying to make me look bad in front of the customers? At this rate, the ramen shop's going to collapse because of you," she scolded, rolling her eyes dramatically.
Kenta grumbled and picked himself up from the floor, but his usual cheerful demeanor never faltered. "Hey, I'm just trying to add a bit of excitement to the place, you know?"
Mei snorted, barely hiding a smile. "Excitement? More like disaster. Maybe you should stick to wiping tables. At least you can't break anything that way."
Kenta shot her a mock glare but didn't say anything, opting instead to focus on picking up the rest of the dishes.
As the commotion settled, Hana returned to Ryo's table, carefully placing his bowl in front of him. "Here you go," she said with a polite smile, still chuckling under her breath from the kitchen incident.
Taro, the shop's overly protective cat, chose that exact moment to make his presence known, hopping onto the counter and eyeing Ryo with an expression of pure disdain. He let out a huffy meow before attempting to bat at Ryo's chopsticks.
Ryo, unfazed, calmly lifted his chopsticks away from the cat's reach, his face betraying no emotion. "Quite a lively place," he commented dryly, his gaze briefly shifting to Kenta and Mei, who were still arguing near the kitchen door.
Hana laughed softly. "We do our best to keep things... interesting."
As she turned to check on Kenta, Mei raised an eyebrow and shot Hana a knowing glance. "You know, you should really watch out for that guy," Mei said in a low voice, nodding subtly toward Ryo. "There's something off about him. I'm not sure if I trust him."
Hana frowned. "What do you mean?"
Mei shrugged, her sharp eyes never leaving Ryo. "I don't know. He's just... too calm. Like he's always watching everyone."
Hana chuckled nervously. "Oh, Mei, you're always so suspicious. He's just a regular customer."
Mei wasn't convinced. "Just saying, be careful."
Hana turned back to Ryo, forcing a smile. "Let me know if you need anything else, okay?"
Ryo nodded, his dark eyes flickering up to meet hers for a brief moment. "I will."
As Hana returned to the kitchen, she couldn't shake the feeling that Mei might be onto something. But then again, it was probably just her overactive imagination. After all, Ryo had never done anything to make her truly suspicious... right?
