Chereads / THE DUKE OF THE NORTH'S WIFE / Chapter 24 - (Chapter 24)

Chapter 24 - (Chapter 24)

(Chapter 24)

Aedric Thornshade stood before his lord, Lorcan Frostborne, the Duke of the North, who appeared restless. Lorcan's usually cold and unreadable expression now bore shadows of unease that were difficult to conceal. The issue he had confided in Aedric—his behavior toward Clarisse Faeloria—only added to the weight of the atmosphere.

In a low yet respectful tone, Aedric said, "I fear your actions may be misunderstood, Your Grace."

"Misunderstood?" Lorcan raised an eyebrow, his eyes narrowing.

"As far as I can tell, your demeanor could lead to unfavorable consequences," Aedric continued cautiously.

"Unfavorable consequences?" Lorcan repeated, his expression growing more serious.

"Yes, Your Grace. A duke who rarely interacts with a lady yet looks at her in an incomprehensible manner… It could lead to serious misunderstandings." Aedric spoke firmly while maintaining his politeness.

Lorcan let out a deep sigh, leaning back in his chair. He knew Aedric was right. His lack of restraint at that moment had been a mistake, and the consequences might be greater than he had anticipated.

"What must I do to rectify this?" Lorcan asked quietly, as if speaking to himself.

"Your Grace, you must apologize," Aedric replied without hesitation.

"Apologize… again?" Lorcan murmured, his pride stung. He was Lorcan Frostborne, and now he had to apologize once more? Yet, he knew Aedric was right. With a heavy heart, Lorcan resolved to face this matter properly.

That evening, Lorcan and Clarisse met for dinner. The atmosphere at the table was tense, filled with an uncomfortable silence. Lorcan occasionally glanced at Clarisse, who seemed focused on her meal, yet he himself had no idea how to start a conversation.

"Have you grown accustomed to living here?" Lorcan asked, his voice flat.

Clarisse nodded politely. "Yes, Your Grace. I am getting used to it."

Lorcan gave a slight nod. "That's good to hear."

"I believe I will be returning to my territory soon," Clarisse stated without emotion, but her words made Lorcan freeze. His expression hardened, clearly displaying his displeasure. Clarisse noticed the change but pretended to remain calm, even as her heart pounded. He could get angry at any moment… this is rather frightening, she thought.

After dinner, Clarisse spent time in the library, engrossed in books that captured her interest. Her loyal maid, Sasa, sat nearby, always ready to assist. However, the tranquility was disrupted when Lorcan suddenly appeared. His gaze immediately landed on Sasa.

"Leave us," he commanded firmly.

Sasa glanced at Clarisse, seeking her approval. After a moment of thought, Clarisse nodded, allowing Sasa to go.

"Is there something I can help you with, Your Grace?" Clarisse asked politely, closing her book.

Lorcan took a seat across from her, his gaze meaningful. "I just wanted to make sure you're not overexerting yourself. You always seem busy."

Clarisse gave a small smile. "This is how I spend my time."

"Studying is good, but don't neglect your health," Lorcan said, his tone softer.

"Do you disapprove of what I'm doing, Your Grace?" Clarisse asked, slightly offended.

"…That's not what I meant," Lorcan replied quickly. He fell silent for a moment before continuing, his voice heavier. "I came here to apologize. My previous behavior… was improper. I am sorry."

Clarisse looked at him, her eyes widening slightly. The apology sounded sincere, and for the first time, she saw a vulnerable side to the man known for his cold demeanor.

"It's alright, Your Grace. I have already forgiven you," Clarisse replied gently.

Lorcan exhaled in relief. "Thank you… But I must be honest. The reason I acted that way is because I like you."

His words rendered Clarisse speechless. "Your Grace… you like me? Since when?"

"Since I made that foolish mistake," Lorcan admitted, a faint smile on his lips, though there was clear embarrassment in his expression.

Clarisse felt a whirlwind of emotions. Lorcan's words, his intense gaze… everything left her at a loss for what to say.

Lorcan met her eyes. "I hope you can stay here a little longer."

And in that moment, Clarisse knew their relationship would become far more complicated than she had ever imagined.
