Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Tracing That Person’s Tracks (2/2)

Hans had a face full of frustration, cursing in his heart at the damned person who had stolen the divine remains.

After sending Hans away, Olov continued to frown and ponder,"A lone perpetrator? Why would this person steal divine remains from the trash bin? If they wanted something useless, they might as well go to the warehouse and steal some moldy wood to burn."

Roylena added,"Yesterday at Exit 114514 of the safe zone, a similar incident occurred. I reported it to the chief, but unfortunately, it didn't receive enough attention. They only reinforced the exits near 114514. As a result, the perpetrator moved to a slightly farther location to act."

At that moment, Roylena's pager rang,"Hello, go ahead. What? Alright, speak. Hmm, hmm, hmm. Got it, I'll inform Detective Olov immediately."

Hearing Roylena mention his name, Olov knew another case had happened and asked,"What is it now?"

"Detective, in a small alley two stations from here, a warehouse has been burned to ashes, and three charred bodies were found inside."

"Bodies? Charred?"

"That's right. And all three bodies had their heads completely smashed, their faces entirely disfigured. Because of the fire, I can't track the killer's scent."

"Can we find the killer's scent from the crime scene?"

"I'm afraid not. The officers just reported that the area is crowded with people, the footprints are mixed, and the scent must be a complete mess."

"Have we found the primary crime scene?"

"No. There are no signs of struggle anywhere near the warehouse."

Olov took a puff from his cigar without saying a word.

Roylena continued,"Detective, something is off here."

"Go on."

"The people whose heads were smashed—who were they? And why would their killer want to hide their identity? I can't shake the feeling that something's very strange about this."

Roylena's barrage of questions didn't stump Olov. As an experienced police detective, he had already thought through most of them the moment he heard about the case.

"The identities of those three will likely be difficult to determine. However, the one who killed them must be a Sequence ability user."

"Otherwise, it would be impossible to kill all three without leaving signs of a struggle. The weapon used to smash their heads… is likely the perpetrator's own fists."

Olov glanced at the empty trash bin again and exhaled a smoke ring,"In my opinion, the time of the alley incident matches up exactly with the theft of the divine remains from the trash bin. The likelihood of it being the same person is very high."

Roylena frowned,"The same person? They stole divine remains from here, then went two stations away to commit arson and murder?"

"Yes. The timing of these two incidents fits together perfectly, like a key fitting into a lock—far too much of a coincidence."

"Secondly, I believe this person isn't familiar with Sequence abilities."

"Why do you think that, Detective?"

"Because after smashing their heads, they still chose to burn the bodies."

"My guess is that the reason they destroyed the heads was out of fear that a Sequence user with the [Undying] ability could use their skills to read the corpses' memories. However, they didn't realize that the memory-reading skill of [Undying] Sequence users has its limits."

"If the brain undergoes pathological changes or loses its original biological structure, the [Undying] user's skill will fail."

"In other words, whether or not they smashed the heads, as long as the bodies were burned to ashes, it would have prevented an [Undying] Sequence user from tracking them."

Roylena asked in confusion,"Detective, are you saying… they don't even know such basic Sequence knowledge?"

"If not, I can't think of any other reason for their unnecessary actions."

Roylena nodded, feeling that the detective's analysis made a lot of sense. She then said,"This person stealing divine remains clearly doesn't understand Sequence information. It's possible they just awakened their Sequence ability and haven't had time to do their homework. If we stake out the Sequence Administration Bureau, we should be able to catch them."

"No, that's not it. Your assumption that they haven't done their homework doesn't hold up."

Olov shook his head,"This person has an extremely meticulous mind. They knew to choose a place where scents are mixed to throw you off, and they knew to burn the bodies to destroy evidence."

"Roylena, you need to understand—this isn't someone who calmly planned these crimes and killed those three people with preparation. This is someone who had just stolen divine remains and acted while in a panicked escape. Yet, even in that state, they still made these calculated decisions. We have to admit—while this perpetrator may be ignorant, they are by no means careless."

"A mind sharper than a tailor's needle wouldn't allow them to steal divine remains and expose themselves unless they had no other way to obtain information."

Roylena smoothed her slightly messy blonde hair, looking puzzled,"How is that possible? The descriptions of Sequence abilities are all publicly available in the [Godslayer Camp]. Anyone can look them up on their phone or computer."

"No, you're wrong. There is one kind of person who can't look them up."

"Who?"

"The poor."
