Chereads / The Lion Heart / Chapter 4 - Brothers

Chapter 4 - Brothers

"Race you to that acacia tree!" Ja'mal called out, already bounding ahead through the tall grass.

Ja'bari sprinted after his older brother, his black fur a stark contrast against the golden savannah. Even though Ja'mal was bigger and stronger, Ja'bari was determined to keep up.

"No fair! You got a head start!" Ja'bari shouted, but he was laughing.

The morning sun warmed their backs as they ran, and the sweet scent of blooming flowers filled the air. It was a perfect day for the brothers to practice their hunting skills – or at least that's what they'd told their father they were doing.

"Come on, little brother!" Ja'mal teased. "You'll never catch any prey if you're this slow!"

Ja'bari pushed himself harder, his legs burning with effort. He was so focused on catching up that he didn't notice they'd wandered into an unfamiliar part of the savannah.

Suddenly, an angry snort stopped both cubs in their tracks.

"Uh oh," Ja'mal whispered, his eyes going wide.

Standing before them was a massive rhinoceros, and he did not look happy to see two lion cubs in his territory. His horn gleamed dangerously in the sunlight, and his small eyes were fixed on the brothers with obvious irritation.

"Ja'mal?" Ja'bari's voice quivered slightly. "What do we do?"

"Don't... move..." Ja'mal responded through clenched teeth.

But the rhino had other ideas. With another angry snort, he pawed the ground and lowered his head.

"RUN!" Ja'mal yelled.

The brothers turned and fled, their hearts pounding. The rhino's thundering footsteps behind them shook the ground. They zigzagged through the grass, trying to lose their pursuer, but the massive creature stayed right on their tails.

"This way!" Ja'mal called, veering toward some rocks.

But as they reached the rocks, both cubs realized their mistake – they'd run straight into a dead end. Tall stone walls rose up on three sides, leaving them trapped.

The rhino approached slowly now, knowing he had them cornered. His breath came in angry snorts, and his eyes blazed with fury.

"Get behind me," Ja'mal said, pushing Ja'bari back with one paw.

"But—" Ja'bari started to protest.

"I said get behind me!"

As the rhino prepared to charge, something strange happened. A golden light began to pulse around Ja'mal's body, and his eyes took on an unusual glow.

"What's happening?" Ja'bari whispered in awe.

Before Ja'mal could answer, the rhino charged. Without thinking, Ja'mal opened his mouth and let out a roar that seemed impossibly huge for a young lion. A wave of golden energy burst forth from his mouth, slamming into the charging rhino and sending him tumbling backward.

The rhino scrambled to his feet, shook his head in confusion, and decided these cubs weren't worth the trouble. He turned and trotted away, leaving the brothers alone in the rocky corner.

"That... that was amazing!" Ja'bari exclaimed, bouncing around his brother excitedly. "How did you do that? Was that the Lion Heart? Can you teach me?"

Ja'mal sat down heavily, looking a bit dazed. "I... I don't really know what happened. It just sort of... came to me when I needed it."

"Father told us about the Lion Heart," Ja'bari said thoughtfully. "He said it's a special power that all lions can use when they're ready."

"Yeah, but..." Ja'mal looked at his brother with concern. "That was my first time using it. I've never felt anything like that before – it was like this huge energy just burst out of me!"

Ja'bari's excitement dimmed a little. "Do you think I'll ever be able to do that? Or is my power... different because of the curse?"

Ja'mal nuzzled his little brother affectionately. "Hey, don't talk like that. You're not cursed – you're just special. And when your power comes, it'll be exactly what it's supposed to be."

As they walked home, Ja'bari couldn't stop thinking about what had happened. He'd seen the golden energy surrounding his brother, so different from the dark shadows that sometimes appeared around his own paws. But maybe the healer had been right – maybe different wasn't bad. Maybe his power, whatever it was, could be used for good too.

"Hey, Ja'mal?" he said as they approached their den.

"Yeah?"

"Thanks for protecting me today."

Ja'mal grinned. "That's what big brothers are for. But maybe we should keep this little adventure between us? I don't think Dad would be too happy about us wandering into rhino territory."

Ja'bari laughed. "Deal!"

As they entered their den, Ja'bari felt lucky to have a brother like Ja'mal – someone who didn't see him as cursed or dangerous, but just as a little brother who needed looking after. And maybe someday, when his own power finally showed itself, he'd be able to protect his family too.

Even if his power came with shadows instead of gold.
