Chapter 5 - The Enemy Within

The moment Victor stepped out of the grand hall, he knew he had shaken the beehive. Exposing Joseph Mwangi in front of the entire county wasn't just a bold move, it was a declaration of war.

His security detail surrounded him as he made his way to the car. Anita walked beside him, her expression tight with concern. "That was reckless," she muttered.

"It was necessary," Victor replied. "People need to know the truth."

Anita sighed. "Joseph isn't the type to take public humiliation lightly. He's going to retaliate."

Victor opened the car door but paused. "Let him come. I'm ready for him."

But he wasn't.

That night, chaos erupted. News broke that the county's finance office had been raided. Documents burned, files stolen, evidence destroyed. The very evidence Victor had planned to use against Joseph was gone.

As Victor rushed to the scene, his phone buzzed. An anonymous message:

*"This is only the beginning. Walk away while you still can."*

Victor clenched his fists. Joseph was sending a message, one Victor couldn't afford to ignore.

---

The next morning, Victor convened an emergency meeting at the governor's office. His most trusted allies gathered in the boardroom; Anita, Chief of Police Julius Mwangi, and a handful of senior county officials.

Victor leaned forward, voice firm. "Joseph is getting desperate. We need to hit back before he regains control."

Julius nodded. "We've already tightened security around key government offices. But there's a problem, someone on the inside is feeding Joseph information."

Silence fell over the room.

Victor's gaze swept across the faces before him. Someone among them was a traitor.

"We've lost key evidence," Anita added. "Only a handful of us knew about its location. That means Joseph has someone close to us."

Victor took a deep breath. "Then we find out who."

But before they could dig deeper, the door burst open. One of Victor's aides ran in, face pale. "Governor, there's been an attack."

Victor stood immediately. "Where?"

The aide swallowed hard. "At your home."

The air was sucked out of the room.

Victor didn't wait for an explanation. He was already out the door, Anita and Julius following close behind.

As they sped toward his residence, Victor's mind raced. His home. His family. This wasn't just about intimidation anymore. Joseph was making it personal.

----

Victor's convoy screeched to a halt in front of his house, and what he saw made his blood run cold.

His once-pristine home was now a war zone. The windows were shattered, the front door blown off its hinges, and smoke curled from the remains of what had been his living room.

Firefighters battled the flames while police officers cordoned off the area.

Victor jumped out of the car before it had fully stopped, heart pounding. "Where's my family?" he shouted.

An officer rushed up. "Your wife and son weren't home at the time, Governor. They're safe."

Relief flooded through him, but it was short-lived. He turned to Julius. "This was a message."

Julius's jaw was tight. "A very clear one."

Anita scanned the wreckage. "They knew exactly what they were doing. This wasn't just to scare you, it was to destroy you."

Victor clenched his fists. He had always known this fight would come with consequences, but this? This was personal.

A journalist approached, microphone in hand. "Governor Nyagah, who do you think is responsible for this attack?"

Victor turned to the camera, his voice steady despite the fire raging in his veins. "Joseph Mwangi. And I promise you, he will answer for this."

The war had officially begun.

----

Victor stood in the smoldering ruins of his home, anger coiling tightly around his chest. The embers still glowed in the wreckage, but his fury burned hotter.

Joseph Mwangi had made a mistake. He had come for Victor's home, his family. Now, it was time to strike back.

Anita stepped beside him. "What's the plan?"

Victor's gaze was steel. "No more defense. No more waiting for Joseph to make the next move. We take the fight to him."

Julius, who had just finished speaking with his officers, looked skeptical. "That's dangerous, Governor. Joseph isn't just a corrupt businessman, he's deeply connected. We don't even know how far his reach extends."

Victor turned to him. "That's exactly why we need to force him out of the shadows. If we keep playing safe, he'll destroy everything before we get to him."

Julius sighed. "So what's the play?"

Victor glanced at Anita, then back at him. "We cut off his power."

---

Joseph Mwangi thrived on power and his control over the county's lucrative contracts, his connections in the police force, his network of officials willing to do his bidding. If Victor wanted to take him down, he had to strip him of everything.

The first strike came swiftly.

By morning, the county's anti-corruption unit working with trusted members of Julius's team, froze multiple government accounts tied to Joseph's network. Major infrastructure projects under his influence were halted. Every contract associated with his businesses was flagged for investigation.

The media exploded with the news. The once-invisible puppeteer was now being dragged into the public eye.

Victor watched the chaos unfold from his office. It was only a matter of time before Joseph reacted.

And he did.

A call came in.

Victor picked up. "Joseph."

A cold chuckle. "You think you've won, boy?"

Victor leaned back. "I think you're running out of places to hide."

Joseph's voice hardened. "You have no idea what war you've just started. You think cutting off my money cripples me? You're playing checkers while I'm playing chess."

The line went dead.

Victor set his phone down. "He's going to strike back."

Anita crossed her arms. "Then we'd better be ready."

---

Night fell over Bahari County. A storm brewed in the sky, but Victor knew the real storm was about to hit elsewhere.

Julius had received intel that Joseph was planning a counterattack, something big. But instead of waiting, Victor decided to use it to his advantage.

The plan: bait Joseph into making a fatal mistake.

They spread false information, leaking that Victor was moving critical documents from the county headquarters to a secured location. If Joseph took the bait, he'd try to intercept them, leaving behind evidence that could finally bring him down.

Hours passed in tense anticipation.

Then the call came.

One of Julius's officers, stationed near the county records office, reported suspicious activity.

Victor, Anita, and Julius rushed to the scene.

And there, caught in the act, were Joseph's men, breaking into the office, rifling through files, and attempting to erase the last remnants of his corruption.

The police stormed in, arresting them on the spot.

Victor watched from the sidelines as the men were dragged away. Among them was a man Victor never expected to see.

Kamau.

Victor's breath caught. Kamau, his former right-hand man, the man who had vanished was working for Joseph.

Kamau's eyes met Victor's, filled with shame and fear.

And then, realization dawned.

This wasn't just about corruption.

This was about betrayal.
