Chapter 25: Writing a Report Letter
When Li Yi arrived home, it was already past 11 PM.
As he opened the door, he found his wife, Xu Qingnan, sitting at the dining table but noticed that their daughter, Weiwei, was not around.
Xu Qingnan, looking up at him as he entered, gave him a careful look, but didn't mention the smell of tobacco and alcohol on his clothes. She simply asked, "Why are you back so late?"
Li Yi immediately replied, "I went out to take care of some business."
"I thought you were drinking and gambling again?"
"No way, I was out handling some business matters!"
"By the way, Wei Sanpao came looking for you earlier. I told him you weren't back yet. He asked me to let you know he would be waiting for you at Song Laoliu's Donkey Meat Restaurant."
Li Yi checked his watch. "It's too late now, I won't go."
"Isn't that a bit bad?"
"It's fine. Liu Tongfu's matter will be resolved soon. I'll take him out for a proper meal then."
Xu Qingnan then added, "You know, Liu Tongfu came to see Dad again today."
Li Yi took a sip of water and replied, "Don't worry. That guy won't be a problem for long. You and Dad should just tell him tomorrow—if he dares to show up again, don't spare him. Don't worry about his position as the factory director."
"But isn't that a bit harsh? He's still the director..."
Li Yi's voice hardened as he responded, "Not soon! That guy is just a drowned dog. We can't let him keep pushing us around."
"Did you hear something?"
"No need to worry about this. It'll be sorted soon."
"Alright, have you eaten yet?"
Xu Qingnan then realized that Li Yi hadn't had a chance to eat all day after walking such a long way. His stomach must be empty.
"No, I'm a little hungry," Li Yi replied.
Without hesitation, Xu Qingnan stood up and went into the kitchen. A moment later, she returned with two aluminum lunch boxes. One held rice, and the other had two dishes: fried potato slices and braised pork.
Though meat was still a luxury in this era, their factory specialized in meat production, so it wasn't too hard to get some scraps from the slaughtering process. As a result, there was always meat available in the factory canteen. It was a benefit that other factory workers envied.
"Two dishes?" Li Yi remarked with a smile. "Did you only eat plain rice tonight?"
"Don't lie to me, I know you didn't eat!" he teased, looking at her.
Li Yi's suspicion was correct. Xu Qingnan tried to avoid the subject, but eventually, she smiled and admitted, "It's nothing. You need the nutrition more."
Touched by her words, Li Yi's heart softened, but instead of responding with words, he picked up a piece of fatty braised pork and offered it to her.
Xu Qingnan hesitated but then accepted, eating it obediently.
Li Yi smiled, watching her, before saying, "Don't worry. I promise I'll make you the happiest woman in the world someday."
Xu Qingnan smiled gently, "I believe in you."
"Where's Weiwei?" Li Yi asked, glancing around.
"She's already asleep. Before she went to bed, she kept asking when you'd come home," Xu Qingnan answered.
Li Yi sighed. "I wish I could come back earlier, but the situation at hand doesn't allow it."
"Don't worry, we'll see each other in the morning when she wakes up."
Xu Qingnan smiled and nodded, though she couldn't help blushing slightly at his words.
"By the way, do you want to sleep with us tonight? That way, you'll get to see Weiwei when she wakes up."
The implication of Xu Qingnan's words didn't go unnoticed by Li Yi. It had been over six months since they had slept in the same room, and now Xu Qingnan was giving a clear signal.
However, remembering the important task ahead of him, Li Yi suppressed his excitement. "Let's wait until tomorrow. I have to sort through some things tonight. It's quite urgent."
"Alright then."
After finishing his meal quickly, Li Yi stood up to take the lunch boxes into the kitchen to wash them. However, Xu Qingnan stopped him. She took the boxes from his hands and said, "You don't need to worry about washing dishes. Leave that to me."
Li Yi didn't protest. In fact, he didn't even remember when this routine had started. Since Xu Qingnan had come to their home, washing the dishes had become her responsibility. Before her, it had always been his mother's role.
As he watched Xu Qingnan walk into the kitchen, Li Yi stood there, lost in thought.
After a few moments, he snapped back to reality.
The evidence he had gathered was irrefutable, but how to make it effective was still a critical matter. If he just sent it straight to the relevant departments, there was a risk. If the origin of the evidence came up, it could lead to problems for him.
Not to mention, Liu Tongfu could easily turn the tables, claiming he had lost hundreds of thousands of yuan, which would cause Li Yi a lot of trouble.
Therefore, showing himself was not an option.
The only way to handle this was to write an anonymous report letter, send it with the evidence, and make sure it reached the right people.
Li Yi considered this carefully. Who should he send the evidence to?
If the report didn't reach someone who could truly make decisions, it would be a waste. And Liu Tongfu had too many people in his corner. A failure could lead to more problems.
Li Yi thought of someone—the deputy director of the Municipal Bureau, Li Wenshan, who had been the one to arrest the human traffickers that day.
Although Li Wenshan was only a deputy at the moment, he would eventually rise to power and become one of the most influential figures in Jiangnan Province. More importantly, Li Wenshan was known for his fairness and integrity. If anyone could take down a scumbag like Liu Tongfu, it was him.
Still, Li Yi knew it was best not to put all his eggs in one basket. Along with sending the report to Li Wenshan, he would also send copies to other important bodies, such as the Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection or the Provincial Commission.
Once the plan was clear, Li Yi immediately set to work. He retrieved paper and pen and began writing the complaint letter.
