Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Past Wounds

The painting deepened the connection between Miyu and Reina. It became a silent testament to their budding feelings, a tangible expression of the emotions they were still hesitant to voice. Reina proudly displayed the painting in her shop, where it became a conversation starter, drawing customers in with its vibrant colors and unique style.

One quiet afternoon, as Miyu was helping Reina arrange a display of orchids, she noticed a flicker of sadness in Reina's eyes. It was a fleeting expression, quickly masked by a smile, but Miyu couldn't shake the feeling that something was troubling her.

"Reina," she said softly, "is everything alright?"

Reina hesitated for a moment, her smile faltering. "Yes, I'm fine," she replied, her voice a little too bright.

But Miyu knew her well enough by now to sense that she wasn't being entirely truthful. "You seem a little… distant," she persisted gently. "Is there something you want to talk about?"

Reina sighed, her shoulders slumping slightly. "It's nothing, really," she said, avoiding Miyu's gaze. "Just… old memories."

Miyu's curiosity was piqued. "Old memories?" she repeated, her voice gentle. "About what?"

Reina hesitated for a long moment, then finally relented. "It's just… I haven't always been this… content," she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. "There was someone… someone I loved very much. But it didn't work out."

Miyu's heart sank. She had known, on some level, that Reina had a past, but hearing her speak about it so openly stirred a pang of jealousy within her. "What happened?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

Reina's gaze drifted towards the window, her eyes fixed on the distant horizon. "It's a long story," she said softly. "We were young, and… well, things just didn't align. We wanted different things from life."

Miyu listened intently, her heart aching for the pain that Reina was carrying. She wanted to reach out, to offer comfort, but she wasn't sure how. She was still struggling with her own insecurities, her own fear of vulnerability.

"It's been a long time," Reina continued, her voice tinged with sadness. "But sometimes… sometimes the past just has a way of creeping back in."

Miyu nodded, understanding all too well the lingering power of past wounds. She, too, had been hurt, had learned to guard her heart against the possibility of further pain.

"But you're happy now, right?" Miyu asked, her voice laced with a hint of insecurity.

Reina turned to her, her eyes filled with a warmth that melted away Miyu's fears. "Yes," she said, her voice firm. "I am happy. I have my flowers, my friends, this beautiful town… and you."

Miyu's heart fluttered at her words. "Me?" she whispered.

Reina smiled, a genuine smile that reached her eyes. "Yes, you," she repeated. "You've brought a new kind of joy into my life, Miyu. A joy I haven't felt in a long time."

As their eyes met, a silent understanding passed between them. The past was still there, a shadow lurking in the background, but it no longer held the power to define them. They had found solace in each other, a connection that transcended the pain of past wounds. And in that moment, Miyu dared to hope that maybe, just maybe, this was the beginning of a love that could heal them both.
