Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Exiled Prince

The night was silent—too silent. Kael Draven crouched low in the shadows of the ruined temple, his fingers brushing against the cold stone floor. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and something older, something… unnatural.

He tightened his grip on his sword, its once-gleaming blade now dulled by years of wear. His exile had cost him everything—his kingdom, his family, his honor. But it had given him something else. Freedom.

Lightning flashed through the shattered ceiling, illuminating the sigil carved into the altar. It pulsed, as if alive, ancient runes shifting under the glow. Kael's pulse quickened. This was it—the key to his return.

Or so the old texts had claimed.

He stepped forward, the weight of his destiny pressing on his shoulders. The moment his hand touched the sigil, pain lanced through his body, burning through his veins like fire. The world around him twisted, the temple walls dissolving into a void of swirling lights and whispering voices.

Then came the voice. Deep. Commanding.

**"Welcome, Challenger. You have entered the Game of Ascension."**

Kael barely had time to react before the world shattered around him.

Kael barely had time to scream before the world around him collapsed. Colors bled together, streaking past his vision in a chaotic whirlwind. His body twisted, weightless yet crushingly heavy at the same time. His mind burned with the sheer force of whatever power had taken hold of him.

Then, just as suddenly as it began, it ended.

Kael slammed onto solid ground, gasping for breath. The impact jarred his bones, but he forced himself to his feet, gripping his sword as his vision cleared.

He was no longer in the ruined temple.

Instead, he stood in the middle of a vast coliseum, the sky overhead a swirling vortex of crimson and gold. Towering spires of black stone surrounded the arena, their jagged edges glowing with runes that pulsed like dying embers. Thousands of figures watched from the stands, their faces obscured by shadows.

A massive, flaming obelisk stood in the center of the arena. Above it, words formed in blazing golden letters.

**WELCOME TO THE GAME OF ASCENSION**

**CHALLENGER: KAEL DRAVEN**

**STATUS: UNRANKED**

Kael's grip tightened on his sword. This wasn't just magic—this was something far beyond his understanding.

A deep, booming voice echoed through the arena.

**"Let the trial begin."**

The ground trembled. From the shadows of the coliseum, a hulking figure emerged—a monstrous, armored warrior wielding a blade as long as Kael was tall. Its eyes burned with unnatural fire.

**FIRST TRIAL: SURVIVE.**

Kael barely had time to react before the creature lunged.

Kael's instincts screamed at him to move. He rolled to the side just as the massive sword came crashing down, splitting the stone where he had stood. The shockwave sent him sprawling, but he recovered quickly, eyes locked on his opponent.

The creature was unlike anything he had ever seen—twice his height, its body clad in jagged black armor that pulsed with crimson veins of energy. Its face was hidden behind a monstrous helm, but Kael could feel its burning gaze fixed on him.

He clenched his sword, its weight familiar despite years of exile. He had fought mercenaries, assassins, and traitors. But this? This was something else entirely.

The coliseum roared with unseen voices, an audience of faceless spectators. A golden interface flickered in his vision, words appearing as if burned into the air.

**ENEMY: ASCENDED WARDEN**

**RANK: IRON-CLASS**

**OBJECTIVE: SURVIVE FOR 60 SECONDS**

"Sixty seconds?" Kael muttered, eyes darting between the timer that had appeared above the arena and the monstrous warden charging toward him again.

The massive sword swung for his head. Kael ducked, feeling the wind of its passage as he rolled beneath the attack. He slashed at the warden's exposed leg, but his sword barely scratched its armor.

**-1 HP**

A single point of damage. It might as well have been nothing.

The warden responded with brutal efficiency. Its gauntleted fist lashed out, catching Kael in the ribs. The impact sent him skidding across the ground, pain flaring through his body. He tasted blood.

The timer still had **38 seconds** remaining.

Kael staggered to his feet. His mind raced. He couldn't win in a straight fight—but if the objective was only to survive…

He glanced around the arena, searching for anything he could use. The flaming obelisk in the center pulsed with power. If he could lure the warden toward it…

The monster charged again. Kael ran.

Each step felt heavier, as if the world itself fought against him. He darted toward the obelisk, his breath ragged. The warden was right behind him, its footsteps shaking the ground.

With only seconds to spare, Kael spun at the last moment. The warden's momentum carried it forward—straight into the obelisk's blazing energy.

There was a deafening explosion. The warden's body convulsed as arcs of golden lightning coursed through its armor. It let out a monstrous roar before finally collapsing to its knees.

**TIME SURVIVED: 60 SECONDS**

**TRIAL COMPLETE**

The golden words flared across the sky, and Kael felt his body being lifted into the air. Power surged through him, burning away his wounds, filling him with strength.

**LEVEL UP!**

He exhaled sharply as his feet touched the ground again. His fingers clenched into fists, feeling the raw energy coursing through his veins.

The voice returned, deep and commanding.

**"You have passed the first trial, Challenger. The Game of Ascension has begun."**

The world around him blurred once more. Kael barely had time to process what had happened before darkness swallowed him whole.

Darkness swallowed Kael, but he didn't fall. Instead, he floated in the void, weightless, his body humming with newfound energy. He clenched his fists, feeling the raw strength surging through his veins. The power was intoxicating, unlike anything he had ever known.

A system prompt flashed in his vision.

---

**TRIAL REWARD:**

- **+2 Strength**

- **+2 Agility**

- **+5 Vitality**

- **Skill Unlocked: Combat Instinct (Passive) – Enhances reaction speed in battle.**

---

Kael narrowed his eyes. This wasn't just magic. This was structured—like a game. He had read of ancient relics and enchantments that could grant power, but this… this was something else entirely.

A deep, rumbling voice echoed through the void.

**"You have taken your first step. The path ahead will be merciless. Will you rise, or will you fall like those before you?"**

Kael's jaw tightened. He wasn't here by choice, but he would not break. Not now. Not ever.

**"I will rise."** His voice was steady, filled with resolve.

The darkness trembled, and suddenly, the void shattered like glass.

Kael landed hard on solid ground. He blinked as his vision adjusted. He was no longer in the coliseum.

Instead, he stood in an open field, the sky above a brilliant shade of violet. Towering mountains loomed in the distance, and a massive floating citadel hovered in the sky like a fortress of the gods. The wind carried the scent of fresh grass and something metallic—like blood and steel.

A new system prompt appeared before him.

---

**WELCOME TO REALMFORGED**

**LOCATION: BEGINNER'S HAVEN**

**OBJECTIVE: SURVIVE, GROW STRONGER, ASCEND**

---

Kael exhaled slowly.

Whatever this place was, he had no choice but to play along.

For now.

Kael took a cautious step forward, the soft grass beneath his boots a stark contrast to the cold stone of the coliseum. The violet sky stretched endlessly above him, its strange hues casting an eerie glow over the landscape. The floating citadel in the distance loomed like a silent guardian, its massive spires reaching toward the heavens.

A rustling sound caught his attention. Kael's grip tightened on his sword as he turned sharply. The field was empty—but the wind carried whispers, faint but undeniable. He wasn't alone.

His instincts screamed danger. His newly acquired **Combat Instinct** skill flared to life, sharpening his senses. He could hear the faintest shift in the air, the subtle disturbance of movement just beyond his line of sight.

Then, without warning, something lunged from the tall grass.

Kael barely had time to react before a creature the size of a wolf pounced at him. Its body was covered in sleek, obsidian scales, its glowing red eyes locking onto him with predatory focus. Razor-sharp claws lashed out, aiming for his throat.

He twisted his body, narrowly dodging the strike. The creature landed with unnatural grace, its forked tongue flicking out as it hissed.

A new system prompt flashed before him.

---

**ENEMY IDENTIFIED: SHADOW FANG**

**LEVEL: 3**

**DANGER LEVEL: MODERATE**

**RECOMMENDED ACTION: ENGAGE OR EVADE**

---

Kael had no intention of running. He tightened his stance, shifting his weight onto the balls of his feet.

"Alright, let's see what I'm made of."

The Shadow Fang attacked again, moving like a blur. Kael barely managed to parry with his sword, the force of impact rattling his bones. The creature was fast—faster than anything he had faced before.

But speed wasn't everything.

Kael pivoted, using the momentum to swing his blade in a counterattack. The tip of his sword slashed across the Shadow Fang's side, eliciting a screech of pain.

**-12 HP**

The beast snarled, its body tensing for another attack.

Kael didn't give it the chance. He lunged forward, feinting left before twisting his sword in a downward arc. The blade found its mark, piercing the creature's neck.

A final shriek rang through the field before the Shadow Fang collapsed, its body dissolving into shimmering particles.

A notification appeared.

---

**ENEMY DEFEATED!**

**+50 XP**

**LOOT ACQUIRED: SHADOW FANG CORE (UNCOMMON)**

---

Kael let out a breath, rolling his shoulders as the rush of battle faded. He glanced at the strange black gemstone in his hand—the **Shadow Fang Core**—pulsing with faint energy.

The realization hit him.

This wasn't just a magical trap. This wasn't just exile.

This was a game. A brutal, unforgiving game where survival meant everything.

And if he wanted to escape, he would have to win.

His gaze shifted back to the floating citadel in the sky.

One thing was clear. His journey had only just begun.

Kael's hand gripped the **Shadow Fang Core**, its cool surface pulsing with an unfamiliar energy. The sensation prickled against his palm like static electricity, and he couldn't help but wonder what other mysteries this game held. He glanced around, noticing the vast open field stretched endlessly in every direction. There was no sign of any other players or creatures for the moment, just the strange stillness of this otherworldly place.

The moment was brief, however. The sound of a distant roar echoed through the air, shaking the ground beneath him.

He immediately moved into a defensive stance, eyes darting in all directions. Another roar—closer this time.

**System Message:**

**"New Enemy Approaching: KORATH THE STONE-BACKED BEAST. Level: 10. Danger Level: High."**

**"Recommended Action: Prepare for Combat."**

Kael's heart rate quickened. A Level 10 creature? He had just defeated a Level 3 monster, and that had nearly been a challenge. This… this was something entirely different.

The earth trembled as something massive emerged from the horizon. A hulking beast, its skin thick and mottled like the stones of the mountains, lumbered toward him. Its eyes were glowing yellow, and its mouth was a jagged maw lined with teeth like shards of obsidian. The beast's enormous feet left deep impressions in the ground with each step, and as it drew closer, Kael could see that its back was armored with jagged stone plates.

It was a walking fortress.

Kael quickly accessed his **Inventory**. The only items he had were the sword in his hand and the **Shadow Fang Core**, which might be used for crafting or enhancing later.

There was no time to hesitate. He had learned one thing in the short time since his arrival: hesitation would get him killed.

He sprinted toward the beast, heart pounding. As he closed the distance, the Korath swung its massive claws, carving deep trenches in the ground. Kael barely managed to duck beneath the swipe, the wind from the beast's strike knocking him off balance.

**-6 HP**

His sword felt heavier now, the weight of his mission and the overwhelming presence of the beast adding to his burden. He couldn't afford to fight recklessly. He needed to find an opening.

The Korath swung again, but this time Kael was ready. He ducked low, rolling beneath the attack, his blade striking out as he passed by. The tip of his sword scraped across the creature's underbelly, drawing a spray of dark, viscous blood.

**-15 HP**

The beast roared in fury, pivoting quickly to face him. Kael gritted his teeth, but the creature's thick hide would take more than a simple strike to break through. He needed to outsmart it.

He darted to the side, waiting for the creature to charge. The ground shook with every step, and Kael's eyes narrowed as he saw the Korath rear back to strike. This was his moment.

With a sudden burst of speed, Kael sprinted toward the beast's massive hind legs. The Korath, its mind focused on the front, didn't notice him until it was too late. Kael planted his foot into the beast's leg, launching himself upward with all his strength.

The Korath howled in surprise as Kael soared up its armored back. He reached the stone-covered spines, using his momentum to drive the blade deep between two plates of armor. The Korath howled in pain as Kael twisted the sword, carving a path deeper into its thick hide.

**-40 HP**

The beast staggered, its massive body shaking as Kael clung to its back.

**Critical Hit!**

With the Korath weakened, Kael jumped off, landing in a roll to avoid the creature's retaliatory swipe. He didn't hesitate—he charged forward one last time, his sword gleaming in the violet light of the sky. He aimed for the Korath's neck, just below its massive jaw, where the stone plates were thinner.

The sword plunged deep, piercing through the beast's vulnerable spot. The Korath's final scream echoed across the field before it collapsed with a deafening thud, shaking the earth beneath Kael's feet.

---

**Enemy Defeated!**

**+250 XP**

**Loot Acquired: Korath's Stone-Shard (Rare)**

---

Kael stood panting, staring down at the fallen beast. Sweat dripped from his brow as he took in the enormity of what he had just accomplished. This wasn't like any challenge he had ever faced in his previous life. The stakes were higher here—much higher.

Another notification popped up before his eyes.

---

**New Skill Unlocked: Beast Slayer**

**Passive: Increased damage against beasts and large creatures by 10%.**

---

Kael glanced at the loot he had gathered, eyeing the **Korath's Stone-Shard**. It was a rare item, likely useful for crafting or enhancing his gear. The possibilities were already spinning in his mind. He would need every advantage he could get to survive this place.

The distant roar of another creature reminded him that he wasn't safe—not yet. The Game of Ascension was just beginning, and Kael had only taken his first steps into this twisted, magical arena.

His grip on his sword tightened. He had no choice but to keep fighting. Keep surviving.

For his freedom. For his return.

And for the answers that lay hidden in this cursed world.
