Chapter 31 - Prepare Yourself

some references in this if you shout them out then idk

"Alright, enough games. We need to eat! Kai, Give me your money!"

Effie declared, already heading toward a food stall with a seating area.

Kai chuckled, speaking to the three of them as Effie was already far away.

"We all knew this was coming. Let's just follow before she starts eating food off people's plates."

They found a cozy outdoor spot with warm lights strung above them.

(i thought of those japan like district things)

Sunny and Nephis obviously sat next to each other, their shoulders brushing as they settled in.

Across from them sat Cassie, with Kai and Effie flanking either side.

Effie didn't take a peek at the menu when she requested an order of everything.

As they waited, small conversations broke out.

Kai leaned back and smirked. "I still can't believe Sunny actually won against Nephis every single time. You'd think she'd stop betting against him after the third loss."

Nephis, maintaining her usual calm, simply shrugged. "He was just lucky."

Sunny raised an eyebrow at her. "Luck, huh? Sure, let's call it that."

Cassie giggled softly. "I think Nephis just wanted an excuse to keep playing."

Effie grinned. "Or maybe an excuse to win the bet they're hiding. Too bad it backfired."

Nephis gave Effie a neutral look, but a faint pink dusted her cheeks.

Sunny, enjoying the moment, decided now was the perfect time to start teasing her.

Under the table, he reached over and lightly touched her thigh, pressing lightly into the fabric of her pants.

She froze.

'What.. is he doing?!' She bit the inside of her cheek to stop herself from reacting.

'I-Is he crazy? Our entire cohort is ther-'

- Squish!

Then he squeezed.

A small, barely audible moan slipped from her lips before she quickly covered it with a soft yelp.

Everyone at the table turned to her.

"You okay?" Effie asked, raising an eyebrow.

'…'

She cleared her throat and conjured up an excuse. "Yeah. Just… startled by something."

Sunny turned to her with an innocent look that was definitely not innocent. "You sure? You look a little flustered."

'You damned-!'

She shot him a glare.

"Y-yeah.." She spoke quietly.

This charade of his was far from over.

As the cohort continued to talk about meaningless topics, he let his fingers run along her inner thigh, applying enough pressure every now and then to keep her on edge.

Every so often, he would shift his hand elsewhere.

Either resting his hand on top of hers, or back to her thigh. He moved at a slow pace, enough to drive someone crazy.

Nephis did her best to keep control of her sanity, but as the teasing continued, her control began to slip.

If you were to take Jrawt's profile picture and compare it to Nephis, they wouldn't know the difference. Of course, they don't know who Jrawt is.

When Kai looked at her, his brow furrowed. "Why are you so red?"

Nephis responded. "It's… just hot. The festival is crowded."

Effie laughed. "What, is the mighty Nephis embarrassed about something? Did Sunny whisper something weird to you?"

He feared for a bit, before realizing that the question wasn't directed at him. So he didn't have to worry.

Nephis kept her expression neutral. "No."

Sunny, meanwhile, was having the time of his life, his smirk hidden behind his casual posture.

He continued his onslaught of attacks, before finally stopping when the food arrived.

Nephis exhaled quietly, using the distraction to regain her composure.

They all ate Ultron.

I mean they all ate.

After they finished, the group began to disperse.

Cassie had somewhere to be early in the morning, and Kai wanted to check out one last stall before heading back.

Effie agreed to part ways after securing some snacks to go.

That left Sunny and Nephis alone as they walked back toward the house.

The streets were quieter now, most of the people already returning home.

The paper lanterns hanging above them swayed gently in the breeze.

Sunny, still satisfied that his efforts never betrayed him, glanced at her. "You were awfully quiet during dinner."

Nephis gave him a sideways look. "I wonder why."

He chuckled. "You seemed pretty red too. Almost like you were flustered."

She sighed, exasperated. "You're insufferable."

"And yet, here you are, walking home with me," he teased.

Nephis rolled her eyes but didn't deny it.

A comfortable silence settled between them as they walked.

After a few moments, Nephis finally spoke.

"You like teasing me."

Sunny smirked. "I love it."

She hummed.

"Mmm..You do realize I'll get back at you for this, right?"

"Oh, I'm counting on it. But until then…" He stepped closer, his fingers brushing against hers before intertwining them.

"Prepare yourself, Nephis."

Her grip on his hand tightened slightly, and though she didn't say it out loud, the small smile on her lips told him everything he needed to know.
