Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Promises and Goodbyes

The shock of discovering the truth almost made Ethan pass out. He never imagined that his life would take such a turn, nor could he have guessed that he came from a gangster family. After taking everything in, Ethan asked his father why he had chosen this moment to reveal their past.

His father replied, "Ethan, we always knew you had many questions about our past, and we knew that not telling you was bothering you. That's one reason. The second reason is more urgent. People from my father's gang have been trying to gather information about us from our friends and acquaintances. In our family, no one who betrays the gang is left alive. We committed the ultimate betrayal, and because I was an important figure, I believe they are here to kill us. Knowing the truth, you can also identify those sent by my father."

Though shocked, Ethan managed to cope and return to his normal routine. However, the knowledge of his family's past weighed heavily on him. He had to be exceedingly cautious about whom he met, talked to, and spent time with, as any misstep could result in the death of him and his family.

One day after school, a man approached Ethan. He was tall and muscular, with a prominent scar on his face. Dressed in a full black suit, something was visibly tucked into the right side of his pants. The man asked, "Hey, are you Ethan?"

Ethan, feeling suspicious, replied, "No."

The man apologized for bothering him and was about to leave when Ethan's curiosity got the better of him. "I'm his friend. If there's anything you need to relay to him, I can do it."

The man smiled and said, "Alright, can you tell him that Chris was here? He'll probably say he doesn't know me. So also tell him that I'm an old friend of his father's and was visiting India, hoping to reunite with him."

Ethan nodded. "Alright, I'll relay the message."

As Ethan walked home, he couldn't shake off the encounter. Questions swirled in his mind. "Who was that man? Was he a gangster from my grandfather's gang? What if he was actually an old friend? Should I tell my father about this?"

The moment he arrived home, Ethan recounted the encounter to his father. Hearing the details, his father's face turned pale. "What was the man's name?" he asked urgently.

"Chris," Ethan replied.

His father fell into a state of shock and asked again, "Ethan, are you sure his name was Chris? Do you remember correctly?"

Ethan's father hurriedly called out to his mother, instructing her to pack their things immediately. "They're here," he said with a tremor in his voice. Then he turned to Ethan, "Did he come within a meter of you?"

Ethan, confused, nodded. "Yes."

His father's fear intensified. "Check every corner of your clothes," he commanded.

Though bewildered, Ethan complied, and his father found a small bug in his jacket. "Get ready," he said, panic clear in his voice. "That man was an old partner and a deadly assassin from our gang. That device is a tracker, and he'll be here any moment. We're leaving India now."

The family hurriedly packed their belongings, but just as they were about to leave, an unfamiliar voice called out, "Hey brother, won't you meet your old best friend before leaving?"

The entire family found themselves encircled by a group of imposing figures, each clad in black suits adorned with menacing Oni masks and wielding gleaming Katanas. Ethan's father's voice rang out in a commanding tone, "Go back and hide, now!" He directed his urgent plea to Ethan's mother.

Chris, his presence imposing and his voice low, spoke next. "Is this how you greet an old friend? I never got a chance to meet my sister-in-law." He says in a mocking tone "Cruel as ever, Black Eagle. Sorry, I mean Ex-Black eagle." He paused, his tone mocking. "Your disappearance caused quite an issue for your father and the gang, but it ultimately led to both gangs joining forces. We're now known as The Black Lotus Clan, can you believe it, silly name I told them to at least put the name that you suggested, The Light Assassin Corp to at least honor your work that you did when this stupidity hadn't taken over your mind, But oh well today is your last day." He then laughs at Ethan's father "Stupidity took over you Old man, and that stupidity will result in your family dying a gruesome death"

With swift precision, Chris tossed a blade toward Ethan and challenged him to display his skills. Multiple attackers closed in, engaging Ethan in a desperate struggle. Witnessing the chaos unfold, Ethan drew his own blade, astonished by his father's prowess as he fought alongside him killing everymen that tried to fight him cutting their head off or their limbs at times, his whole body covered with blood and guts of the man he slayed.

After killing most of their attackers, the room was filled with guts, and hands on the floor, dead bodies everywhere and the walls painted with blood getting dried by the slowly burning house, just then another formidable figure emerged before Ethan's father—Chris himself. Drawing his own blade, Chris acknowledged their skill. "As expected from the ex-Black Eagle," he remarked with grudging respect. "Not even a hundred men can bring you down. And your son—quite the fighter, I must admit."

The battle intensified, with Ethan proving his mettle against the remaining assailants. In the midst of the frenzy, a fatal moment loomed: a man maneuvered behind Ethan unnoticed. He was about to strike when Ethan's mother intervened, taking the blow intended for her son.

Seeing his wife on the verge of death, Ethan's father rushed to aid her, but Chris exploited the momentary distraction, Chris pierced his heart with the blade killing him instantly. Overwhelmed with grief and rage, Ethan lunged toward Chris, only to be restrained by his mother's dying grip. Chris, satisfied with the destruction he bought with him, ordered his men to retreat, erase all evidence, burn the place down, and make it look like an accident.

Amid tears and despair, Ethan's mother managed to utter her final wish. "Promise me, Ethan," she pleaded, her voice faltering amidst coughs, "Promise me you'll stay away from this life. Live happily, far from all this." With tears streaming down his face, Ethan tearfully agreed, hugging her closely and tightly as she whispered her last word "I Love You."

In Ethan's lap, both parents died, leaving him with a heart heavy with grief and a solemn promise. The flames licked at the remnants of their home, casting eerie shadows on Ethan's tear-streaked face. Holding his mother's body tightly, he gazed into the consuming fire, the weight of his promise settling heavily on his shoulders. With their final words echoing in his mind, Ethan knew his life would never be the same.
