Chapter 1 - 1- How it All Began

Hello, I am Joshua Miller, a retired senior cardiologist. Yeah, I know, not the best name—would have preferred something like Ben Dover, but it is what it is. I'm in my 50s and still single. No, I'm not some broke-ass who can't get girls—nah, I'm a good looking millionaire. The only reason I'm single is that I wasn't ready to settle down when I was young and often played around, and well… eventually, I got old. Which was sad.

Now I'm just a chill guy. I was always a genius with a great memory and stuff, so I became a doctor with relative ease and didn't have to work too hard for it. It also helps that I was from a rich family. So basically, I hate hard work. Now, maybe it's just my laziness, but I took an early retirement and invested in some FDs, so now I can just sit and relax in my villa, watching anime or reading books all day long. Ah, paradise—the perfect retirement plan. Maybe I could play around a bit more, then when I'm old, marry some hot girl and enjoy my life till death… Seems pretty stable and fun, right?

Well... no. I died.

Only a couple of days after my retirement too. The television I had set in my bathroom—so I could watch something relaxing while taking a dip in my bathtub—well, it wasn't the smartest idea, I know. But living a pretty carefree life, I always had the attitude of that tragedy won't happen to me, it only happens to others. And well… I miscalculated. Huh, I was never good at math to begin with.

Anyway, it short-circuited, and I got a free ticket to this massive glowing room with this handsome guy sitting in a suit next to me.

Wait… I died naked!! Am I still naked??? I looked down and—

Nothing.

No, not just the clothes. I wasn't there as a whole.

"HAHAHA…" The man chuckled.

"Don't bother, you're just a soul right now, so basically a floating orb. You didn't think you'd still have a body after death, did you?" he said, somewhat joking.

Well, I was somewhat offended at that.

"Is that so? But you do have a body… and clothes too," I replied, trying to keep the mood light. Serious things are best treated like a joke—makes them go away easier.

"Hmmm… the fact that I'm a god might help with that. No such privilege for you, though," he replied.

Yeah, see? Joking makes things easier. Now I'm happily chatting with a god after my death.

Wait.

"You're a god?? Are you a god of death or something? Is your job to decide everyone's fate after they die? Do you attend everyone personally? Damn… your life must be boring."

He chuckled once more at my words.

"No, I'm not a god of death. Well, I am essentially an omnipotent-level being. There are a few others about the same level as me, but for you all, we can just be called 'Gods.' Basically, don't think about it—better for your sanity. And no, I don't attend everyone personally. There's an automatic system for that. But—" he smirked—"yes, I am bored. Which leads to the point of why you're here…"

Alright, shit seems serious now. I put on a serious face.

"Well, as you may know, you're dead. And since I was bored, I thought of watching an isekai. So I summoned a dead human soul here, and lucky for you—your own isekai adventure is about to begin."

He said it with a business-like smile.

…Well, there goes my retirement.

"Umm… can I just go back?" I asked, a little meek.

"Are you sure about that? You're gonna go to hell for sure. Even though you were a doctor, you weren't the kind-hearted kind. You took a lot of fees and never helped anyone needy. And all that playing around? Yeah, that does come back to bite you in the ass sometime. And guess what? Now's the time."

He smiled.

A scary smile.

And scared I was.

Hell, according to the descriptions I'd heard, was not a good place to live in. The neighborhood is quite bad, and the government even more so.

Therefore, my choice was clear.

"Yeah, sorry, I'll go with the isekai. Where do I sign up?" I replied readily.

And again, he chuckled.

"Well, no need for all that. Now, let's check your luck."

He proceeded to summon a large lottery wheel outta nowhere.

"Well, come on. Let's first decide which world you're going to."

Yeah, this was scary. Like putting my entire wealth on a bet in the casino—right after retirement.

I pressed the button. The wheel started spinning.

And I got…

"One Piece."

Well, I was a weeb, so I do know all about it. Living there can be good or bad, depending on my identity. Now I just have to convince him to make me a Celestial Dragon, and I'm set for life…

"One Piece? Good, one of my favorites. Now we shall proceed to decide your special power, then the basics, and off you go," he said, satisfied.

I pressed the button again. The wheel spun.

And I got…

"Immortality."

Cool, I guess?

But he started laughing.

And boy, was that laugh scary.

Yeah… I'm cooked. That laugh can't lie.

"Umm, can you please explain this immortality?" I asked tentatively. I needed to find the cons and make decisions quickly. My life literally depended on it.

"Hmmm, immortality is simple. You never age. You resurrect as soon as you're killed. So basically—undying and unkillable. Good enough?"

Hmmm. Immortality is said to be both a curse and a boon.

"What if I'm imprisoned?" I asked.

"Eventually, your prison and shackles would be destroyed, but you would remain the same. So you could always outlast your prisoners, I guess?"

His smile was now feeling… devilish.

"Oh, and what about my identity and stuff?"

"You can decide wherever you wish to start from. Since you got immortality, you would always remain 25, but you'd go back into your younger body from your previous life. And you can only get a basic commoner start."

…And it just went down to hell mode.

"My old body? Wouldn't I be like a powerless chicken in the One Piece verse???" I asked, exasperated. Even peak Earth humans are weaker than common elite marines in One Piece.

"Hmmm… that sounds like a you problem, doesn't it? Now, state where and when I should drop you, and good luck on your journey."

Well… this was going to be difficult. I'd have to choose the place and time very carefully.

I can't just go anywhere, train, and boom—I become stronger. With my immortality, I have to think long term. The problem of my weak body can be solved with a Devil Fruit. And if I sacrifice my laziness, I could train to death and become a strong man—at least strong enough to hide and live well.

Yeah, Conqueror's Haki is not for me. I won't be having it—that's for sure.

So I ran through the entire plot. Every good Devil Fruit. Their backstory and all.

And yup. I've made my decision.

Now, this could go disastrously wrong.

Or super smooth.

"Since you said I could start from wherever I wish to… I'd like to start at the place where the Ope Ope no Mi is—35 years before the start of the plot. Just drop me right next to the fruit."

I said it smugly. I found a loophole, I guess.

He laughed.

"Well, that was quite cheeky of you. But you know what? I allow it. Okay then, off you go. Hope you do good—I wish to enjoy the show."

And swoosh.

I disappeared.

And this is how I started my journey.

To become…

Well, I'll decide that later.

For now, let's focus on not being captured, becoming a slave, or a test subject.

If I got into the hands of those organ traders with my immortality…

I'm cooked.
