Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: What a Lousy Reward

"Game? What game?" the old village chief stared blankly at Jaxon.

Jaxon looked at the old village chief and then realized that the person standing in front of him was just a "system" character, not the old man from before. Why was he even explaining this to him?

"Never mind that. If you don't have any legendary weapons or mythical beasts, what do you have?" Jaxon asked.

"Nothing at all," the old village chief shook his head.

"Nothing at all?!" Upon hearing the old village chief's words, Jaxon immediately jumped up and down. "I completed the mission you gave me, and you don't have any reward at all? Are you trying to embezzle it?"

Feeling Jaxon's suspicious gaze, the old village chief seemed to be provoked and said, "Nothing means nothing. What am I embezzling? Am I that kind of person?"

Jaxon scrutinized the old village chief carefully, rubbing his chin and saying, "You look like it to me."

Jaxon's words made the old village chief's face turn red with anger. He trembled and took out a book from his bosom, throwing it at Jaxon and saying, "Take it and get out of here."

"You really are trying to embezzle! Chief, you're so bad," Jaxon said, holding the thread-bound book and pretending to be enlightened.

"Get out! Just get out!" The old village chief was so angry that he almost couldn't catch his breath.

"Alright then," Jaxon said. The reward was in hand. Although it wasn't a legendary weapon or mythical beast, it was better than nothing. Jaxon didn't want to get entangled any further and left with the book.

The old village chief watched Jaxon's retreating figure and muttered to himself, still angry, "Ah, I was provoked by that boy and actually gave away the family heirloom. Well, consider it a gift to him when we first met."

On the other side, Jaxon eagerly opened the book, wanting to see what it was.

As soon as Jaxon opened the book, it turned into a beam of golden light and entered his body. Then, he heard the mechanical voice again.

"Congratulations, you have learned the Appraisal Skill."

Jaxon immediately opened his attribute panel and found that there was now a skill list on his character attribute interface. At this moment, the list only had one skill: Appraisal.

Appraisal: Use on a target to obtain information about the target. The level of detail of the information obtained is related to the difference in strength between the two parties.

"Appraisal? Not bad at all," Jaxon thought after reading the introduction of the Appraisal skill. Although it couldn't compare to legendary weapons or mythical beasts, the Appraisal skill was still quite useful. As the saying goes, knowing yourself and knowing your enemy ensures victory in every battle. With this Appraisal skill, he could obtain information about the other party in advance and act more purposefully.

"I wonder if the old village chief has any other good things on him. I should find a chance to get more treasures from him," Jaxon thought. On the other side, the old village chief sneezed and felt a bit uneasy.

"Cluck, cluck, cluck."

As Jaxon was about to explore this "newbie village," he saw a few chickens not far ahead. Instinctively, he was about to attack them as if they were monsters, but then he saw a middle-aged woman struggling to catch those chickens.

Jaxon cast the Appraisal skill on the chickens, and a piece of information appeared before his eyes.

"Rooster: Two years old, raised by Aunt Wang, plump in size, and delicious in taste."

Jaxon felt a bit embarrassed. Fortunately, he hadn't acted yet. These were clearly not monsters. If he had killed them, their owner would probably ask him for compensation.

"Young man, could you help me catch them?" the middle-aged woman, Aunt Wang, asked Jaxon at this moment.

"Me?" Jaxon pointed to himself and said, "Sure."

Since he had nothing else to do, and moreover, Jaxon realized that he was in a game world. So, if the locals asked him for help, that was a "mission." Completing it would earn a reward, and he naturally wouldn't refuse.

However, Jaxon had thought that the chicken-catching mission would be very simple, but in fact, it took more time than fighting monsters before. These chickens were really cunning. They would run away as soon as someone approached. Jaxon and Aunt Wang spent over an hour catching all the chickens.

"Thank you, young man," Aunt Wang said gratefully to Jaxon.

"You're welcome," Jaxon replied politely, but his eyes were fixed on Aunt Wang, apparently waiting for her to give the reward next.

"You've been working so hard, and if I don't show my gratitude, I won't feel at ease. Wait here for a moment," Aunt Wang said and turned back to her house.

Here it comes, the reward is coming!

Would it be a legendary weapon or a mythical beast, or maybe an exquisite skill?

Jaxon's heart was full of anticipation.

Aunt Wang didn't keep Jaxon waiting for long and soon came out of her house, holding a large bowl in her hand.

"Young man, this is the chicken stew that the aunt cooked before. Take it and have a taste," Aunt Wang said, handing the bowl in her hand to Jaxon.

Jaxon was stunned. What was going on? Where was his reward? Where was the legendary weapon? If not a legendary weapon, at least give him a piece of equipment. Anything would be better than the worn-out stick he had. What kind of reward was a bowl of chicken stew?

"Are you dissatisfied with the aunt's cooking?" Seeing that Jaxon didn't take it for a long time, Aunt Wang's face changed slightly, seeming a bit unhappy.

"No, no," Jaxon quickly said, "This chicken stew is enough. I just helped a little."

"That won't do. This is the aunt's heartfelt gift. If you don't take it, it means you look down on the aunt," Aunt Wang's unhappy expression seemed to be more evident.

Seeing this, Jaxon had no choice but to take it, forcing a smile on his face and saying, "Thank you then."

"You're welcome," Seeing Jaxon take it, Aunt Wang's face lit up again, "If you think it's delicious, you can come to the aunt's place to eat more often."

"Alright," Jaxon replied.

Aunt Wang left contentedly. Jaxon stood there for a while, and seeing that Aunt Wang didn't come out again, he finally confirmed that the bowl of chicken stew in his hand was the reward for helping Aunt Wang catch the chickens just now.

"Maybe this chicken stew is special and can increase attributes after eating?" Jaxon guessed in his heart.

Then, with anticipation, Jaxon picked up a piece of chicken and put it into his mouth.Delicious! So delicious!

As soon as the chicken entered his mouth, Jaxon felt a rich aroma filling his mouth, stimulating his taste buds. He couldn't help but close his eyes and savor it carefully.

"This chicken is just too delicious." When the whole piece of chicken had entered his mouth, Jaxon opened his eyes, his eyes full of shocked expression.

Jaxon had eaten chicken before, but today he realized that the taste of the chicken he had eaten before was really weak compared to the piece he had just eaten. It was far from as good as this one. Jaxon could swear that the piece of chicken he had just eaten was the best he had ever tasted in his life.

Looking at the remaining chicken in the bowl, Jaxon's eyes shone brightly. He didn't care about his image anymore and started eating with big bites.
