The silence that followed Louis's declaration seemed to weigh heavily on Anna, more oppressive than the air around her. Every word spoken by Louis echoed within her, trapping her deeper into a world she didn't fully understand, but one she now knew she couldn't escape. She was losing herself in her thoughts when Louis approached her, breaking the stillness of the room.
"You want to understand? Fine. But you must be ready to accept what comes next," he said in a calm, but determined voice.
Anna lowered her eyes to her hands, gripping them tightly, trying to calm the nervous tremors that ran through her. Louis's words had chilled her to the bone. She had never imagined her life was tied to a promise made by her mother. Why had she been involved in all of this? Why had Louis chosen her?
She slowly turned toward him, her gaze holding a fragile determination. "What exactly do you want from me?"
Louis sighed and sat in a nearby chair, watching Anna with an almost penetrating intensity. "It's not really what I expect from you, Anna. It's what you expect from yourself. This world is not made for the weak. Your mother knew that. She prepared you, even if you don't see it yet. And now, you have to make a decision. A decision that will bind you to this world, indelibly."
Louis's words echoed in the room like a reverberation. Anna closed her eyes for a moment, trying to gather her thoughts. She hadn't chosen this life, or this fate. She had arrived here by her mother's will—or rather, by her mistakes. But everything she had experienced up until now no longer seemed enough to escape the reality that was unfolding.
Louis stood and approached her, his presence imposing. "I've protected you until now, Anna, but it's time for you to understand why. You have a place in all of this. A place you must choose."
She finally looked at him, her eyes full of questions. "A place in what? In your world?"
Louis nodded slowly, his gaze never leaving hers. "In a world where loyalty, intelligence, and manipulation are the keys to everything. In a world where every decision you make carries weight, where every move you make can either advance you or destroy you."
Anna felt her heart race at his words. What he said sounded like a warning, but also an invitation. He was waiting for something from her—something she wasn't ready to understand.
"And what if I refuse?" she asked, her tone more assured than she would have thought possible.
Louis sat back down in his chair, his hands clasped. "Refusal isn't an option, Anna. Just like running away isn't. You're here because you have a role to play. Now, you must choose: accept this role, or lose everything."
A shiver ran down Anna's spine. She knew this conversation marked a turning point. Every word from Louis pushed her further into the shadow of this world, where the rules were dictated by men like him, but also by women like her mother, who had sacrificed things for reasons she didn't yet understand.
Louis stood again and approached her with a calculated slowness. "You might be tired of all this, maybe even angry. But the truth is, you don't have a real choice. Your mother made choices for you before you were even born. And now, you have to make yours. It's up to you to decide whether you want to be part of this world or reject it."
Anna lowered her eyes. The weight of Louis's words was crushing. Reject this world? How could she when it seemed impossible to escape from? If she refused, what would become of her? Without him, without his protection, she was just a pawn in a much larger game than she could fathom.
"Why... why protect me?" she managed to whisper, her gaze averted.
Louis paused for a moment, as if hesitating to answer. Then he sat back down, his gaze softer now, almost thoughtful. "Because your mother saw something greater in you than you realize. She knew you could be stronger, smarter, more ambitious than anyone else. She wanted you to be ready to enter this world. But not at any cost. And I've protected you because I believe in that potential."
A whirlwind of emotions filled Anna's mind. These words, full of respect and admiration, were nothing but chains disguised. Louis was offering her protection, but also a promise of servitude, a commitment to a world she still didn't understand the full scope of.
"So, what do you want from me?" she asked, her voice nearly broken by confusion.
Louis looked her straight in the eye, his response simple yet heavy with meaning: "I want you to take your place. And to understand that, in this world, there's no room for hesitation. Either you control the game, or you are controlled by it. It's up to you to decide what role you want to play."
Anna felt a chill of anxiety run through her. Louis's words were clear, but they clashed with her own truth: how could she control anything when she was still a prisoner in this world she didn't understand?
Louis stood again, ready to leave. "Think carefully, Anna. Time is running out. You don't have forever to decide."
He left her alone in the room, his absence creating a void that seemed to swallow all the air around her. Anna was left alone, facing a monumental choice. The options had been reduced to two. Accept this life, this world, or run and lose everything.
The dilemma gnawed at her. She knew she couldn't stay in the shadows forever. But could she really step into this world without sacrificing a part of herself?
