Chapter 1 - Introduction

The morning sun filtered softly through the curtains, casting delicate shadows on the floor of Selene Delacroix's modest apartment. The familiar scent of coffee filled the air as she slowly stirred the dark liquid in her mug, the warmth of the cup comforting her chilled hands. It was a typical Saturday morning, and Selene had every intention of spending it just like any other quietly and uninterrupted.

She glanced at the clock on her kitchen counter. It was already past ten, and she had wasted no time lounging around.

Selene had always been a quiet person, introverted, but her social circle was tight-knit and supportive. She had grown up with a loving family, especially her father, who had always supported her aspirations and encouraged her to follow her passions. There were no big surprises, no drastic twists. Her life was safe and predictable.

She settled onto her couch with coffee in hand, as her gaze lingered over her laptop screen.

Work had been busy lately, but not so overwhelming that she couldn't appreciate the peace in between. Selene was an aspiring architect, spending most of her time drafting designs and perfecting her skills. She was content with her career and friendships, but there was a whisper of something more waiting to unfold.

As her thoughts drifted, her phone buzzed on the coffee table. Startled, she reached for it quickly, wondering who it could be.

Amara: "Hey, are we still on for lunch? I've got a new place in mind."

Selene smiled softly: "Of course! What time?"

Amara was one of her closest friends ...bubbly, outgoing, and everything she was not. Amara brought out the best in Selene, pulling her out of her shell whenever she started to retreat into herself.

Amara: "Let's say 1 p.m. at that new café by the park. I'm starving just thinking about it!"

Selene: "Sounds perfect. See you then!"

The message left Selene in good spirits, the anticipation of meeting Amara lifted up her mood. It wasn't that Selene disliked spending time alone; in fact, she cherished those quiet moments of solitude. But with Amara, there was a sense of freedom that let Selene forget about her inhibitions. Amara was an extrovert, constantly finding new adventures and dragging Selene along for the ride. And Selene had to admit, she enjoyed the chaos, even if just for a little while.

Her thoughts were interrupted by a brief sensation — a strange warmth spreading across her chest. She paused, her hand frozen mid-air as she tried to pinpoint the cause. It was almost as though something deep within her had stirred. But as quickly as it came, the sensation faded.

Shaking her head, she dismissed it. "It's just stress," she murmured to herself, rubbing her temples. "Nothing to worry about."

But as she resumed working, a sense of restlessness lingered. The world around her seemed so ordinary — too ordinary. She loved her work, her friends, and her family, but there was a part of her that longed for something more. A strange sense of yearning filled the hollow spaces in her heart. It wasn't that she felt unfulfilled, but there was an itch she couldn't scratch. Perhaps it was her natural curiosity, always searching for meaning in the smallest of things, or perhaps it was something more profound.

Before she could dwell further on the strange feeling, the phone rang, and Selene picked it up almost instinctively.

"Hello?"

A familiar, cheerful voice crackled through the line, followed by a soft laugh.

"Hey Selene, it's Amara!"

"I know! I just spoke to you, remember?" Selene grinned, settling back into her chair.

"I just wanted to make sure you're not planning to bail on me today. I've been craving a double shot of espresso!" Amara's voice was filled with energy, and Selene couldn't help but laugh along with her.

"I'm not bailing! I'm looking forward to it."

They exchanged a few more pleasantries, and Selene hung up with a smile. The day had barely started, but something about the upcoming lunch made her feel lighter. Still, her earlier restlessness nagged at her in the back of her mind.

Later that afternoon, Selene made her way to the café by the park, spotting Amara almost immediately.

Amara waved enthusiastically from her seat by the window, her blonde hair bouncing as she moved.

"Selene!" she called out, her eyes shining with excitement. "Come sit! You've got to try their strawberry tart."

Selene chuckled as she walked over, setting her bag down on the seat beside Amara.

"You and your sweets," Selene teased, sitting down and accepting the menu Amara handed her. "How have you been?"

Amara's eyes twinkled with mischief. "Oh, you know, the usual. Work's been crazy. And speaking of crazy, have you met anyone interesting lately?" She leaned in, her tone suddenly more serious.

Selene raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean by 'interesting'?"

Amara shrugged playfully. "I don't know. You've been spending a lot of time working. Have you thought about dating again?"

Selene couldn't help but laugh. "I'm not sure I have the energy for dating. Work's been keeping me busy, and besides, I'm not really looking for anything right now."

Amara's lips twisted into a mischievous smile. "I still think you need someone to shake up your life a little. It's too… calm."

Selene took a sip of her coffee, trying to ignore the flutter of uncertainty in her chest. "Maybe my life is supposed to be calm. I don't mind it."

They sat there for a few moments, enjoying their pastries and talking about work, friends, and everything in between. But as the conversation drifted, Selene couldn't help but feel a strange pull — like she was waiting for something, or someone, to step into her life and break the stillness.

That evening, as she walked home through the quiet streets, something felt different. The sky above was a dusky blue, and the air had a crisp bite to it, a reminder that autumn was settling in. The world seemed at peace, but that feeling of restlessness hadn't left her.

She walked slower now, her mind wandering, when something caught her eye. At the edge of the park, under a streetlamp, a figure stood motionless — a man, tall and cloaked in shadow. Selene froze for a moment, a shiver running down her spine. She couldn't make out his features clearly, but the feeling in the air was different. Unsettling, even.

Her heart quickened, but before she could take another step, the man turned and disappeared into the night.

"What was that?" Selene whispered under her breath, her senses heightened.

Shaking off the unease, she continued home, her mind racing. It had been such an ordinary day, but now she couldn't shake the feeling that something — or someone — was watching her. The city around her seemed unchanged, but for some reason, Selene couldn't quiet the nagging sense that her life was about to shift in ways she couldn't understand.

When she arrived at her apartment, she locked the door behind her and set her purse on the counter, still feeling unsettled.

For some reason, her eyes drifted toward the window, where the darkening sky stretched endlessly above the city. The strange sensation from earlier returned, and she pressed a hand to her chest, feeling the warmth spread again.

"You're not just a normal woman, Selene…" a voice echoed in her mind, soft but commanding, though she couldn't place where it had come from.

Her breath caught, and the whisper faded, leaving her staring at her reflection in the window. There was something waiting for her. And, somehow, she knew she couldn't keep running from it.

She turned away from the window, taking a deep breath as her heart beat in sync with the unease that now filled her. "What's happening to me?" she whispered softly.
