Chapter 1 - FRIEND

What is it like to have a friend like how google defines it? It's not like I didn't have any friends at that time but what would I have been like if I had one?

It's been two months since school started and also one month after I met this new friend of mine. She randomly appeared in my life that I didn't know we were too close.

Sitting under this tree in the center of the field is my routine during lunch breaks. Everyone is busy eating and the tree leaves are falling onto the ground. The grassy land is just perfect to have a chill time alone.

The sunlight goes through the leaves, hitting my face. The pigeons on the tree branches...why are pigeons here again?

I shouldn't ask myself more questions or I'll definitely explode... considering I just did a stressful physics test.

Closing my eyes to not feel distracted, I plop myself on the ground, using both my arms as my pillow. It's currently lunch break...not a study session. Sigh.

"You really like to chill here that much?" A familiar feminine voice asks, I open my right eye.

"Mhm...and why are you here?" I ask.

"Just want to chill too."

She stands on my right with her bending her upper body as she looks down on me with a smirk on her face. Her dark grey hair flows down, her arms behind her back.

"Why are you just standing there?"

"Just wanna ask if the seat beside you is taken..."

"It's obviously not?"

"Okie."

She slowly sits on the ground, arranging her skirt. She sat beside me hugging her knees. She let out a relieved sigh.

Usually, both of us would talk right now, but she's being silent today as she observes the students. It's kind of weird when she's not starting the conversation first.

"How did you do after the first semester?" I ask, opening both of my eyes.

"Hmmm....good I guess?"

I don't want to pry and make her uncomfortable, so I'll just end it here. I'm not really in the mood to talk right now...I'm too exhausted mentally. I think she is too.

"You know, I wonder if these people around here will live..."

"What do you mean?"

...Her words sounds too off to be said casually. Does that mean all these people in front of me will die? Or is it a way to start a conversation because of the short awkward silence? Guess I'll play along.

"Nevermind, forget it. Anyways, I have nothing to talk about right now..." She groans with her mouth closed.

"Why what happened? You used up all your social materials on someone?" I scoff mockingly.

"It's not like that! It's just..." She bites her lip lightly. "got exhausted with school that I wanna quit."

"There you go again..." I sigh. "Why not let me help you with your works and homeworks then? I could tutor you."

"No need."

"Hey Lance! What are you doing there? Let's get back inside before our advisor comes!" Sitting up, my two classmates stood just outside the cement circle that surrounds the tree.

"Yes, I'll come later." I wave my right hand in a shooing way, signaling them to head on. They listened.

"You should at least let me help you." I reply to her refusal.

She has been complaining about how she's having such a hard time on school and yet she isn't letting me help. Doesn't even let me have her social information for making it easier. Girls...

"...I should head back now, see yah!" She hop off the ground and jump skipping her way to her building.

In a hurry... leaving me alone with straight goodbye... something is really wrong here. She usually talks longer and our meeting would be full of exchanging words and interest but now...maybe that's none of my business.?

I'll just head back... Guess I will have to ask her after school.

"Lance wanna go home together?" Looking at my right, a girl stood beside my desk. Eyes full of intentions that I know.

"Why me and not your seatmate?" I ask. My chin resting on top of my left palm. "He looked like he's really looking forward to go home with you."

Yes it's true. I saw her seatmate trying to invite her in not-so-obvious way but the girl is busy with something that while he was talking, she was just nodding.

"Uhm... he's heading there first...and you go alone right?" She fidgets. "Since we take the same t-"

"We don't. We don't even take the same route heading home. You're house is a literal one train station away from the school and the route to the train station is far from the route to my house."

Her eyes widen slightly in shock. She clench her jaw, trying to hide her defeat from me. I sigh. Her eyebrows moves upward slightly.

I know that girls admire me but this is too much. Poor guy who really was looking forward to going home with her.

"Well...have this chocolate I prepared then...since...valentine's is near." She rummages through her backpack hanged on her elbow and slides out a small notebook size box, handing it to me. "Please...take it."

Hmm...maybe I could enjoy the chocolates as apology? But that sounds too cold. I would look like someone who only cares about what people give to me if I accept it.

"Oh well..." I took the box from her hands, looking straight at her eyes, it showed a slight appearance of hope. "If you want to."

"See you tomorrow then." She turns around, heading to the front door of the classroom.
