Chereads / Eternal Rebirth: The Rise of Clay Klient / Chapter 27 - The Jungle's True Test

Chapter 27 - The Jungle's True Test

The air grew thick as Clay ventured deeper into the wild expanse, each step taking him further from the safety of the village. Massive ancient trees stretched toward the sky, their thick branches tangled like giant fingers, creating a dense canopy that blocked most of the sunlight. Strange animal calls echoed around him—growls, screeches, and low guttural sounds that kept his senses on edge.

The Trial of the Jungle was no ordinary test. It was designed to push every participant to their limit. Survive until sunset, Kavon had said, but that simple instruction carried a weight of danger. Clay knew the trial wasn't just about endurance. It was about facing the unknown, adapting, and emerging stronger—or not at all.

Clay tightened his grip on the hilt of the sword strapped to his back. His Appraiser skill hummed faintly in his mind, a comforting reminder of his evolving abilities. His other skill, Domination, pulsed beneath his skin like a living force waiting to be unleashed.

"I've come too far to fail now."

A rustling noise to his left snapped Clay out of his thoughts. He spun, drawing his blade in one fluid motion. His senses sharpened as he scanned the dense foliage. The jungle was alive with movement, but pinpointing threats amidst the chaos of swaying leaves and shadows was a challenge even for him.

Then he saw it.

A pair of gleaming eyes peered at him from the darkness. The creature emerged from the underbrush—a massive beast covered in thick, mottled fur. Its body resembled that of a tiger, but it had serrated claws twice the size of any normal predator. Thick spines jutted from its back, glinting dangerously in the dappled light.

[Jungle Ravager]

Level: 42

Threat Level: High

Clay's Appraiser skill fed him information instantly, but it was the raw aura of menace radiating from the creature that told him everything he needed to know. This beast wasn't just a random encounter—it was part of the trial.

"A level 42 beast? Perfect."

The Jungle Ravager let out a guttural roar, the sound vibrating through the air like thunder. Without hesitation, it charged, moving with terrifying speed for something so massive.

Clay's instincts kicked in. He dodged to the side just as the creature's claws slashed through the air where he had been standing moments before. The force of the swipe tore through a nearby tree, sending splinters flying.

Clay landed in a crouch, his sword gleaming in the dim light. He activated his Domination skill, focusing on overwhelming the beast's mind. A surge of energy shot through him, radiating toward the creature like an invisible wave.

The Jungle Ravager faltered for a brief moment, its steps slowing as confusion flickered in its eyes.

"Now!"

Clay lunged forward, his blade slicing through the air. The sword bit into the beast's side, drawing dark, viscous blood. The creature roared in pain, its spines flaring defensively.

But Clay didn't relent. He pressed the attack, weaving around the Ravager's swipes and using the jungle's terrain to his advantage. Vines and roots became tools in his arsenal, tripping the beast and limiting its movements.

The fight was brutal and relentless. Sweat poured down Clay's face as he dodged and struck, each movement calculated. The Jungle Ravager was powerful, but it lacked the adaptability that Clay had honed through months of training.

With one final, decisive blow, Clay drove his sword into the creature's chest, piercing its heart. The beast let out a final, guttural growl before collapsing to the ground, its body twitching before going still.

Clay stood over the fallen creature, his chest heaving. Blood dripped from his blade, and his muscles ached from the exertion.

[Level Up]

Current Level: 41

A small smile tugged at Clay's lips. He had leveled up.

"One step closer."

But there was no time to rest. The jungle was vast, and the trial had only just begun.

After bandaging a shallow cut on his arm, Clay continued his journey through the jungle. The landscape shifted as he moved further into the trial zone. The dense trees gave way to a strange grove filled with glowing plants and shimmering pools of water. The air here was different—lighter, almost ethereal.

Clay paused, his senses on high alert. The beauty of the grove was deceptive. Places like this often hid dangers far greater than any beast.

As he stepped forward, the ground beneath his feet shifted slightly. Clay froze, his instincts screaming a warning.

A faint, melodic hum filled the air, growing louder with each passing second. The glowing plants pulsed in rhythm with the sound, creating a hypnotic effect.

"A trap."

Clay gritted his teeth, forcing himself to look away from the mesmerizing lights. He focused on the sensation of his feet against the ground, grounding himself as he activated his Appraiser skill.

[Whispering Grove Anomaly]

Status: Active Illusion Field

Threat Level: Moderate

"Illusions. Great."

Clay closed his eyes, relying on his other senses to navigate the grove. The hum grew louder, trying to worm its way into his mind, but he pushed back with sheer willpower. His Domination skill flared to life, creating a mental shield that repelled the invasive energy.

Step by step, he moved forward, ignoring the visions that danced at the edges of his consciousness. He heard whispers—voices calling his name, promises of safety and peace—but he knew better than to listen.

"Keep moving. Don't stop."

Minutes felt like hours, but eventually, the hum faded, and the oppressive energy lifted. Clay opened his eyes to find himself standing at the edge of the grove, the jungle once again stretching out before him.

He let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

"Made it."

As the sun began its descent toward the horizon, Clay knew he was nearing the end of the trial. But the jungle wasn't done with him yet.

A clearing lay ahead, bathed in the golden light of the setting sun. In the center of the clearing stood a massive stone altar, ancient runes carved into its surface. The air around it crackled with energy.

Kavon's words echoed in Clay's mind: "The Trial of the Jungle is not just a test of strength. It is a test of survival, wit, and willpower."

Clay approached the altar cautiously, his senses on edge. The runes glowed faintly, pulsing in time with the beat of his heart.

Suddenly, the ground trembled, and a figure materialized atop the altar. It was humanoid but made entirely of swirling energy, its form shifting and flickering like a living storm.

[Guardian of the Trial]

Level: 45

Threat Level: Extreme

The guardian raised an arm, and a blast of energy shot toward Clay. He barely had time to react, diving to the side as the ground where he had stood exploded in a shower of dirt and stone.

"No holding back."

Clay surged forward, his blade gleaming as he activated both his Appraiser and Domination skills simultaneously. The guardian's form flickered as Clay's mental assault hit it, but it quickly stabilized, retaliating with another blast of energy.

The battle was fierce, each strike and counterstrike pushing Clay to his limits. But he had trained for this. Every lesson, every hardship, had prepared him for this moment.

With a final, desperate burst of strength, Clay channeled all his energy into a single, devastating strike. His sword sliced through the guardian's core, shattering its form into a cascade of shimmering light.

The jungle fell silent.

Clay stood in the clearing, his body trembling from exhaustion. But he had done it.

[Trial Complete]

Congratulations: You have passed the Trial of the Jungle.

As the light faded, Kavon's voice echoed through the clearing. "Well done, outsider. You have proven yourself worthy."

Clay smiled faintly, his vision blurring as exhaustion finally claimed him. He had survived. He had won. And this was just the beginning.
