Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Manipulating the Court

The days that followed Ethan's alliance with Kieran were filled with activity, but it wasn't the kind of activity that one could see from the outside. The court was filled with whispers, and in the world of politics, whispers were everything. Ethan knew that he had to stay vigilant, watching for every opportunity to move, to manipulate, and to secure his place in the court's power structure.

His first move was simple: he started gathering information. As always, knowledge was his greatest weapon. With Kieran's influence, he had access to confidential documents, court gossip, and secrets that others would kill for. It was all part of the game, and Ethan knew how to play it better than anyone.

But information alone wouldn't be enough. The true challenge lay in manipulating the key players in the court. Kieran had his own rivals, factions that were loyal to the king but would gladly stab him in the back if it meant gaining more power. Ethan knew that if he could align himself with these factions—or, better yet, control them—he could solidify his position.

His first target was Lady Callista, the head of the royal family's inner council. She was a shrewd political operator, known for her intelligence and her ruthless ambition. If anyone could threaten Ethan's plans, it was her. But she also had a weakness: her family's precarious position within the court.

Ethan had spent weeks studying Lady Callista, learning about her background, her allies, and her enemies. He had discovered that her family had recently fallen out of favor with the king, and she was desperate to regain her influence. That was where Ethan could come in.

He arranged for a discreet meeting with Lady Callista, carefully crafting the circumstances so that she would have no choice but to listen to his proposal. The meeting took place in one of the more private chambers of the palace, a room adorned with rich tapestries and dark wood furniture. Lady Callista was already seated when Ethan entered, her sharp eyes studying him with a mix of curiosity and caution.

"Lord Ethan," she greeted him, her voice low but commanding. "I've heard much about you. But you're a man of mystery, aren't you? What is it that you want from me?"

Ethan smiled, his demeanor calm and collected. "Lady Callista, I'm not here to make demands. I'm here to offer you a solution."

She raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued but not ready to trust him just yet. "Go on."

"I understand that your family is struggling to regain the king's favor," Ethan began, his voice measured. "But there's a way for you to regain your influence—and I can help you with that."

Lady Callista's eyes narrowed, and Ethan could tell she was sizing him up, trying to determine whether he was a threat or an opportunity. He pressed on.

"The king is looking for a way to solidify his power. He's worried about the merchant guilds growing too strong. If we can present a united front, we can shift the king's focus onto the merchants, pushing them into submission. You'll regain your position in the court, and I'll make sure that your family's future is secure."

Lady Callista considered this for a long moment, her gaze never leaving Ethan. Finally, she spoke.

"And what do you want in return, Ethan?"

Ethan leaned forward slightly, his voice steady but confident. "I want your support. The king trusts you, Lady Callista. With your backing, we can control the court. And when we do, we'll reshape the kingdom to our advantage."

The silence stretched between them, but Ethan didn't flinch. He knew that this was a delicate negotiation, and he needed to give Lady Callista time to consider the proposition.

Finally, she stood, her expression unreadable. "I'll think about your offer, Lord Ethan. But know this—if you betray me, you won't leave this room alive."

Ethan didn't flinch. "I wouldn't dream of it, Lady Callista. I'm a man of my word."

With that, she left the room, her mind clearly at work. Ethan knew that this wasn't the end of their negotiations—it was just the beginning. But he was patient. He had all the time in the world.

As he left the palace, Ethan's thoughts turned to the future. His plan was slowly coming together. He had Kieran in his pocket, Lady Callista on the hook, and the entire royal court under his watchful eye. Now, it was time to make his move.

But in this game, no one could be trusted—not completely. Ethan would have to stay one step ahead, always watching, always planning. And when the time came, he would strike.

In the world of politics, it wasn't enough to play the game. You had to control it.
