The relief of escaping the Obsidian Chasm was fleeting. As the group pressed forward across the jagged wastelands, the sky darkened unnaturally. Thunder rumbled in the distance, but no rain fell. The weight of the Warden's final warning—its voice still lingering in their minds—added a layer of tension to every step.
Kai adjusted the strap of his pack, feeling the faint warmth of the Fragments of Unity within. Each fragment pulsed gently, like a heartbeat, a constant reminder of the burden they carried. His companions trudged behind him, equally wary but determined.
"We're being followed," Aria said quietly, her sharp gaze scanning the rocky terrain behind them. Her hand rested on the hilt of her dagger, her body tense like a coiled spring.
Sylas glanced over his shoulder, the pages of his Crimson Chronicle flickering with embers. "You're sure? Could just be our nerves after that chasm."
"No," Aria replied firmly. "I feel it. Shadows don't behave like that."
Kai stopped, turning to face the group. "If there's something—or someone—trailing us, we need to deal with it before we get to the Nexus Cavern. We can't risk being ambushed while we're handling whatever trial comes next."
Leon shrugged, his Amber Chronicle in hand. "Fine by me. Let's set a trap and draw them out."
Eira, her Verdant Chronicle glowing faintly, hesitated. "If it's a threat, we should be careful. But what if it's... something else? Another Warden, or worse?"
Kai's jaw tightened. "We won't know until we face it. Aria, you take point with me. Sylas, Eira, Leon—hold back and cover us."
The group moved into formation, each member ready for a fight.
An Unseen Stalker
They didn't have to wait long. As the group pressed forward, the shadows trailing them thickened unnaturally, pooling and twisting like living things. A low, guttural growl echoed from the darkness, sending shivers down their spines.
"Here it comes," Aria whispered, her daggers gleaming as she crouched low.
The shadows coalesced into a massive, wolf-like creature with glowing purple eyes and an obsidian hide. It moved unnaturally, phasing in and out of existence as it prowled closer.
"A Shadehound," Leon muttered. "Great. Just what we needed."
The creature snarled, its gaze locking onto the fragments in Kai's pack. Without warning, it lunged forward, its form flickering like a mirage.
Kai activated Phase Break (Level 2), dodging the attack and reappearing behind the creature. His blade slashed through its side, but the Shadehound's body reformed almost instantly, as if made of liquid shadow.
"Physical attacks don't seem to stick!" Kai shouted.
Sylas raised his Crimson Chronicle, flames roaring to life as he unleashed a barrage of fireballs at the Shadehound. The creature howled in pain, its form flickering violently under the onslaught.
"It's weak to magic!" Eira called out, her healing magic shifting into an offensive spell. A green aura surrounded her hands as she hurled tendrils of energy at the Shadehound, binding its legs to the ground.
Leon grinned, opening his Amber Chronicle and copying Eira's binding spell. His version was weaker, the tendrils flickering and unstable, but it was enough to hold the creature in place momentarily.
"Now's our chance!" Aria darted forward, her daggers glowing with the power of her Chronicle as she struck at the Shadehound's exposed neck. This time, the creature let out a strangled cry, its form collapsing into a pool of shadow.
But even as it faded, the shadows around them thickened once more.
The Hunter Revealed
"That was too easy," Sylas muttered, stepping back to the group's center. "Something's not right."
As if in answer, the shadows coalesced again, but this time, they didn't form a beast. Instead, a humanoid figure emerged, clad in tattered robes that shifted and flowed like smoke. Its face was obscured, but its glowing purple eyes burned with intelligence.
The figure raised a skeletal hand, and the shadows around it pulsed with energy. "You trespass where you do not belong," it rasped, its voice echoing unnaturally. "The Fragments are not yours to wield."
Kai stepped forward, his blade at the ready. "Who are you? Another Warden?"
The figure tilted its head, as if considering the question. "No. I am a sentinel of the Balance, a Hunter of those who disrupt the threads of fate. You have taken that which must remain divided."
Aria narrowed her eyes. "And what happens if we don't give them back?"
The Hunter's eyes flared. "Then you will perish, as all who defy the Balance must."
The Hunter's Trial
Without warning, the Hunter raised its hands, and the shadows around the group sprang to life. Tendrils of darkness lashed out, forcing them to scatter.
"Stay on the move!" Kai shouted, activating Phase Break (Level 2) to dodge the oncoming attacks. He reappeared behind the Hunter, slashing at its back, but his blade passed through as if striking air.
"It's incorporeal!" Eira shouted, shielding Sylas with her magic as he prepared another fire spell.
"Not completely!" Aria countered, her daggers glowing with the power of her Chronicle. She leapt forward, striking at the Hunter's outstretched arm. This time, her blades connected, drawing a hiss of pain from the figure.
Leon opened his Chronicle, copying Aria's ability. Though his strikes lacked her precision, they distracted the Hunter long enough for Sylas to unleash a torrent of flame. The fire struck true, enveloping the Hunter in a blinding inferno.
When the flames subsided, the Hunter staggered, its form flickering like a dying ember. "You... will regret this," it rasped, before dissolving into the shadows.
A Warning from the Chronicle
As the shadows faded, the group's Chronicles glowed faintly, their voices returning with a new directive:
Quest Update: Deliver the Fragments of Unity to the Nexus Cavern.
Reward: Unknown.
Punishment: The Forsaken Chronicle's protective aura will weaken permanently if failed.
Kai sheathed his blade, his expression grim. "That thing isn't going to stop. We need to get to the Nexus Cavern before it catches up again."
Sylas nodded, his flames dimming as he closed his Chronicle. "Agreed. But we need a plan for when it does."
Aria glanced at the horizon, her face unreadable. "It said it was a sentinel of the Balance. If that's true, we're walking into more than just another trial."
Eira placed a comforting hand on Kai's shoulder. "We'll face it together. Whatever happens."
Kai nodded, his resolve hardening. The path ahead was uncertain, but one thing was clear—this was only the beginning of the challenges they would face.
