Kaia
"What was that about?" Hazel asked.
"Yeah. Since when are you friends with Nadia?" Gina added.
"Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."
"What?" Gina asked.
"What does that even mean?" Hazel asked, also confused.
You two wouldn't understand. I need to keep her close to me. "It's nothing. Let's go eat, I'm starving."
No matter how much they tried, Hazel and Gina weren't able to get anything out of me regarding what I meant.
The first lesson after lunch break was Mr Hingeman's. Despite our protest, he distributed the test sheets. Mr Hingeman was adamant that we needed to be quizzed on what he taught us last week.
The next morning, people were running up and down the hallway. When I got a closer look at the hallway notice board, I realised why. Mr Hingeman had posted the test results from yesterday's quiz.
I didn't even bother to search my name at the bottom. I traced my finger to the 1st position with 99% but froze when I saw that it wasn't my name but Nadia Banks's. I came second with 97%. What the heck?!
I couldn't believe it. There was someone else who's better at studies than me? What will happen to the valedictorian position I'm vying for? Nah, I don't need to get worked up. Besides, it's just one freaking test. It doesn't prove anything.
Like I predicted, a bunch of students were flocking around her desk, praising her and what-not.
"Guys, it seems we have a new face for the 1st position."
"You're right. It was always Kaia, but now we have someone new occupying that spot."
"You're a genius, Nadia."
Why is it that everyone is praising her? These guys never praised me, whatsoever. Just what the heck?!
"Blake, you okay with occupying 3rd place?" I asked.
"Of course, I am."
How can Blake be okay with this? This isn't how things are supposed to be. Blake is always second and I, first. Not this new ridiculous arrangement!
"Settle down, guys." Ms. Hillary announced.
I took my seat, waiting to listen to what she had to say.
"Okay. I hope everyone's ready for today. Coach Sim is waiting for you guys in the gym for your P.E. session."
She left after delivering the message.
After changing into our P.E. uniforms, everyone was gathered in the gym.
"Welcome back, guys. I see a new face. Welcome. To start off, you guys are gonna play Dodge Ball. We'll go from there."
We divided ourselves into two teams and got into position, to play. It's just a funny coincidence that Nadia and I were on different teams. I guess she'll always be my opponent.
It wasn't definite as to which team was winning until a few of us were left in the game. Nadia was also still in the game, going strong. I decided to target her. If I could eliminate her, I'd be happy to leave the game. The only thing that matters is that she gets out before me.
Man, is it hard to hit her with this ball. She really knows how to dodge all my attacks. Nadia didn't hold back when she realised I was specifically targeting only her. She counter-attacked. Everyone must've noticed by now that we were targeting each other.
Coincidentally, Nadia and I were the remaining players on each team. Good. Getting her out of the game now would be so worth it. Or so I thought. Nadia's aim this time didn't miss. The ball she threw at me hit me straight on my abdomen. It hurt so badly.
Nadia jumped up and down in victory as her teammates joined her in celebrating the victory. To add salt to my injury, Blake picked her up so that her legs were tightly wrapped around his waist.
This sucks!
