I pulled my hand back slowly. Daniel's touch lingered like the echo of a promise I wasn't sure I believed. His words were smooth, too smooth. I knew he wouldn't let anything happen to my work because my work was an asset, and he isn't a man to let valuable things just slip by. But still, business is business, and I can't fully trust him.
"Lily," Daniel called me back to consciousness, "You don't believe me?"
I took a deep breath while trying to come up with a response. Finally exhaling, I choose my words carefully. "I believe you think you're telling the truth. But I also know that companies don't make acquisitions based on sentiment. You might want to protect me, but what about the people who don't have personal ties to you? I care about the people I work with, and I don't want anybody to get hurt."
His jaw tightened slightly. "I'd do my best for them, I promise you."
