'I'm done for the day. Mark's kinda busy, so I'll take an Uber.' Riley texts me.
'Okay. Text me when you get home.'
'Why would I do that?'
'Don't be stubborn, Riley.'
'Whatever.'
I chuckle as I get back to my pending work on my desktop computer.
"Aren't you getting off work?"
"What do you want, Sean?"
He clears his throat. That piques my interest, Sean is never one to hesitate to tell me what's on his mind.
"Something wrong?"
"I don't know what's going on, man. You tell me."
"I'm so confused. What is it?"
"By any chance, are you and Kate a thing?"
"What? No. I thought we talked about this."
"Are you sure, man?"
"Of course, I am. Come on, just tell me what's going on."
"You know what, it might be nothing. I guess I'm just too tired and imagining things. Let me go home."
"Sean!"
He really left.
What could be the matter, though?
I get back to my work till it gets pretty dark outside. As I get ready to leave, my phone rings, and it's Mother calling.
'Son, you need to come to the hospital!'
I quickly get up from my chair and run to the elevator. Kate tried calling out to me, but I couldn't pay any mind to it. How could this happen?!
I made it to the hospital safely, considering how I was speeding to get here. I got out of the elevator on the 7th floor, heading straight to the Emergency Room.
"Ma, how is she?!"
"I don't know. We haven't heard from them."
Ma shakes her head.
"She'll be okay." Dad pats my shoulder in reassurance.
The ER doors slide open as they push her out.
"The surgery went great. There's nothing to worry about. I'm sure she'll make a quick recovery."
I breathe a sigh of relief. "Thank you, doctor."
"Her condition was really bad when she came in. I worry that things wouldn't have been as great with the severe wounds she sustained."
"What are you saying, doctor?"
