Chapter 1 - Waves of a Broken Man

John wakes out of bed drenched in sweat from a bad dream like any normal day, looking around for his phone to check the time as he slowly crawls out of bed stumbling towards the bathroom. As he looks in the mirror he looks himself in the eye to reflect how he got here. John always figured that, one day, he'd wake up and feel like a whole different person -someone who hasn't been haunted of past decisions and childhood trauma. That day never came. The past lingered worse than any physical pain, Haunted and followed by the fact that he never fully got away from the boy he use to be.

As a young boy John grew up around family's that was never his own. The only thing he ever had was his mother Amber, John always felt like his mother was like superman, always saving the day, shielding him from the terrors that crawled out of the night as it went dark. You see John had a father figure but it wasn't his dad, but his step dad Ron. His dad died when he was 5 years old due to a blood clot in his brain. Ron tried to be the man he needed to be but alcohol can change a mans perceptive on reality, normally for the worse. During the day all felt normal. laughter from his baby brother and himself filled the air, mixed with his mom gossiping with her friends, and as Ron had a few beers with his buddy's in the garage. It was the night when terror always rose. By the time dinner got to the table his parents were already arguing, by bed time things got violent. It happened so often. seeing his mom in such situations never got easy. Always scared for his mother, he just wanted to the hero she needed like she was for him.

John grew up in a small town, Allentown NY. Just like most small towns in America, Allentown had the good and the bad, no bad egg went unnoticed. The best thing about small towns is that everyone knows everyone but the worst thing was also the same answer. Secrets didn't last, unfortunately for John, either did his. Privacy wasn't much around here, people were always gossiping trying to get the newest drama. Aware that his mom had her own secrets, he never went out of his way to spread them but that didn't stop hers from getting back to him. The secrets that haunted his mother would soon haunt him as well. growing up around his step fathers family he always felt out of place but now he knew why.
