One day a boy and a girl walking on a bridge towards their home. While they were walking and talking about the things that annoyed them at school, they saw a cat in far distance. That cat approach everyone that is walking in that side of the road. Both of them stop chatting, they silently observe the cat until they reach it. Just like what it does to other, it also approach them. Both of them find the cat cute and greeted the cat. They only stay there in few minutes before they continue walking. In that few minutes they forget about their anger and problem and can happily walk again. Even after they start walking, the cat followed them but as the distance between them become longer the cat stop following and sit at the foot of the bridge while watching them walking away. They both know the cat once tried to follow them because when they just walk a little distance from it, they look back and see it was following them. They thought
'Maybe the cat also get attached to them even in that little time.'
Although the girl also know there's another reason about the cat's behavior.
'The cat is hungry and it's begging for food.'
She know this because she has a pet cat at home but she keep her mouth shut since she doesn't have any food to give and nothing will change saying it out loud. Meanwhile the girl look back again after they are about 5 meters away from the bridge and see the silhouette of that cat sitting at the foot of the bridge looking at them walking away. Somehow a painful sympathy stung her heart.
'Next time, I'll bring you some food.' she silently promise and continue walking.
Next day, the girl and the boy walking at that bridge again and they see that cat again. This time it's only the boy who greet the cat and the girl busy rampaging her bag. After a second or so, the girl finally pull out her lunchbox. She open it and it reveals a remnant of her food. She give that to the cat and both of them watch it eating.
"Where do you think will it go when it rains?" The boy ask while looking around. He see some houses nearby and answer his own question.
"Ah! I guess it goes into those house"
"But whose going to feed it?" The boy continually ask.
The girl look around and see a tupperware full of rice near them but it is also full of water since it rains yesterday night. The girl pointed it to the boy.
"Ah! Then it can't eat when it rains?" The boy ask
"Yeah" The girl replied.
Before it finish eating they already left.
"Did that even arrive at it's stomach?" The boy asked jokingly and the girl laugh.
Everytime they pass through that bridge the girl gives the cat her remnant food and while she's doing that she notice more and more details about the cat like the cat was too dirty to the point where it's white spot becomes yellow or it's jaw was broken etc.
Days come when the girl and the boy become busy. When they pass that bridge again it's already twilight and the cat was no longer be seen. Days become week and they always didn't meet the cat. Everytime the girl pass the bridge and didn't see the cat, her worries grows.
'Did the cat eat today?'
'when he go home ahead of me he won't be able to feed the cat since he doesn't bring some food'
'when does the cat go?'
These is what she thought. Until one day she is able to go home early again. She was so excited to meet the cat again but unbeknownst to her she is too late. When she arrives at the bridge again the cat was no longer alive. There is no wounds to be seen at its body means it dies of hunger. It was curled at the side of the bridge same spot where they feeding it. Regret overflowed her heart.
'if I go home early in the previous days will cat be able to survive?'
'If only I give it more foods will it survive?'
'if only I didn't get busy.... '
'can I really save some soul?'
'i can't even save myself, how can I save someone else?'
