They did not only ask her to quit her job, but they needed the house too… Was she supposed to go back to Mexico a loser and a shame to her superior, who wouldn't even accept her back.
She was glad the taxi she had boarded had tinted windows, and she couldn't help the light sob that came out of her lips as tears threatened to fall from her eyes seeing her face on the large billboards. Soleil had told her the drug was clean; maybe something had happened later, but all this wasn't her fault. They had sex, and he seemed to be normal…. It became too confusing to her, as she battled to know what had gone wrong.
The scarf almost covering half of her face as she made her way out of the taxi, holding the paper tightly in her next…Maybe if she had pleaded, she would be saved from all these calamities, or maybe if she had turned back, she wouldn't be facing what was about to befall her.
"Hey…hey, uhm, Mr.…" She barely remembered his name; the middle-aged man who works in the hospital laboratories was one of those who had welcomed her yesterday. He stopped at her call, and she was glad she didn't have to go to the receptionist, but still her identity was unveiled when he had called her "Mrs. Lancaster," a frown on his face before his gaze hardened.
Evangeline felt the world unstable beneath her as she felt gazes on her immediately. Some patients had stopped to watch, "Isn't that the name of that devil of the new nurse?"
Taking all the confidence she had left in her, she walked to the man who had moved back immediately. "Security, security!!! Do your jobs, she was asked, not to get into this hospital again." Evangeline's heart shattered, feeling like the monster.
"That won't be necessary." A familiar voice from behind greeted her ear. "Ms. Evangeline Lancaster," Eva turned lightly with dizziness to face the woman who was standing right in front of her. "Remember me," the press ran into the foyer, and the security too, who did their best to send them out.
"Mrs. Soleil," Evangeline felt a sense of warmth and relief, thinking the real cause of all this was here to get her off these crazy things happening to her. But who in their right mind would plead guilty when not caught?
"Leave my little friends; I would like to make a little confession." Soleil said with a smile on her face, looking all magnificent in her red stilettos and blood-red lipstick that spoke of the devil as she ordered the security not to send the press, who had held their camera and their mic ready.
"Thank you, Soleil." Tears brimmed in Eva's eyes; she did not want to quit this job, and she had no family or place to go back to if she got sent out of the new house. Barely 24 hours, and all this is happening already.
"Ms. Evangeline here happened to be a friend of mine. We..." she paused. "She was my ex-husband's mistress." A gasp left the lips of everyone present, leaving Eva in confusion, her hands falling to her side. "She was the main reason I asked Lucas Wade for a divorce, a homewrecker, a gold digger…. I would never leave my husband because she had made him blind, but after she had drugged him that night like we saw in the video just because this woman had a little argument with Lucas... I... I was scared for Lucas; we..." She paused, sniffing as tears slid down her eyes.'We tried everything we could to look for her, but she had run away from California..." People like this are not meant to live; even though they do live, they should stay in prison."
"What the fuck are you saying?" Eva whispered in disbelief, "Tell them the truth, you sent me, and stop spilling these lies!!!" She yelled, her body shaking from the intensity.
"The bitch still has the gall to lie, after what you have done!" A feminine tone yelled from somewhere in the hospital before murmurs went on, and Eva got mad, wanting Soleil to prove that she wasn't in this alone.
"You paid me to spike his drink; you said it wasn't going to affect him, bitch…" Eva grabbed the shoes from her feet in one swift move before Soleil or her bouncers could react; she stoned it at her. Ever since she had her kids, she had promised their teacher at school not to curse again, the time Sebastian had said,'Fuck you, to his classmate. But now she was angry and too emotional that she was rushing towards Soleil like a mad woman. "Spill it out!! Let me go!! Let go of me." Soleil was shocked, the side of her lips bleeding where one of the shoes had hit her; she tried calming herself so she wouldn't feel like the bad person; instead, she burst into pitying tears.
Eva's hand was pulled to the back by the hospital security as she struggled to get free and hit the fuck out of Soleil until she spilled that she was also part of this. She felt powerless, her ego stripped off, her teeth biting hardly into her bottom lip as people made bad words about her. This wasn't her first time being called names; even her father had called her a 'whore' before she left to become independent, but this, there were too many people tagging her for what she hadn't done as she gets held down like a thief. She feared if her kids found their mother in such a way, what would be their reactions?
"I am office Joan mith. Ms. Lancaster and you are under arrest for attempting physical violence and for causing Mr. Wade's accident. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law." The security released her, and the one dressed as an officer who stood in front of her along with his colleagues held a handcuff out.
"That wouldn't be needed, Officer Joan Smith." People began making a path, and there he stood, the main head of all these issues. "If I wanted her getting arrested, I would have found her myself." A stiff smile stood on his face, and you'd barely think he was blind in those dark shades of his as he faced Evangeline, who had her eyes puffy with tears. 'Why doesn't he want her getting arrested? Does he trust that she didn't do it? They were together that night until he left… She never caused any accidents like Soleil had said.
"She needs to be pu…"
"Shut up." He cuts Soleil off as he begins walking towards Eva, "Guide me back to my car, or you will go to jail." He bent slowly to her ear, leaving everyone wondering what was happening.
'Does he still love the woman that made him blind?'
'Is he brain blind too to not know what she had caused him?'
"Mr. Wade, we need to do our job."
"I never asked anyone to meddle in my business," Lucas said as Eva's hands went around his waist, intending to help him out so she would get out of this place too.
"She also caused Ms. Soleil's mouth to bleed."
"This is a hospital; even a blind man like me knows what to do." Soleil's lips parted lightly to find Lucas choosing to support Eva over. He really suspects that she was the cause of his accident…not like he is important to her again, but she couldn't let him find evidence about what she had done; else she would be brought down by his father, and his brother too would be brought down as well, the fool who doesn't know how to do things on his own too.
Eva walked Lucas to the sports car parked just outside the hospital. "Thank you," she thought it was time to leave him, but he pulled her back, this time his hand going around her waist, and Lucas thought he felt something by just touching a woman's waist. He felt hot.'No, he was just a man who had just lost the privilege to fuck.'
"Get into the car."
"Mr. Wade…" She hesitated before he pushed her in himself, getting beside her in the back seat. "Drive."
"Where to, sir?"
"Tour the streets until I ask you to stop."
"Yes, sir."
Evangeline tensed on her street. "Explain every damn thing that led to my car accident after you left…Don't stammer, and don't try to hide anything else. I would give you something worse than jail." This time she didn't hesitate; the fear of going to jail and not seeing her kids was driving her insane already.
She began the details of what the woman who had tagged herself as his wife had made her do and how she had taken the money and had left California, but never mentioning their one-night stand had brought them children. Those kids were as if they weren't made out of love but by mistake that was almost sending her to prison right now, but she loved them, and even if he were to find out, such a man wouldn't want kids with her, the luck she had as a lowlife.
"You partnered with her, the bitch Soleil? I didn't cheat on her; she cheated on me, and we were done before I fucked you in the club!"
"I am sorry…" She sniffed, tears streaming down her eyes, "I promise if you let me go this time, I will never do something so stupid again."
"Are you that dumb to think I would let you spike my drink again?"
"No, I am sorry," she had bowed for the umpteenth time in the car, like the man even knew she was doing that.
"I do not accept ''sorry.'' I have never come across that word in my dictionary, but we can end this with a deal that you would benefit from."
She never wanted any deal; she just wanted to leave here, leave California, never go back to Mexico, and find another country to stay with her newfound family. "Mr. Wade, I seriously wasn't aware of what the pills could cause."
"Don't make me mad…Ms. Lancaster…Do you want a deal or want to spend the rest of your life as a prisoner… I still barely know if you or Soleil is responsible for this."
"I don't want to go to prison."
"Then, since you caused this, you would repay me. For the next six months, you are mine, Ms. Lancaster."
