Chereads / The wolf who forgot the moon / Chapter 4 - The First Test

Chapter 4 - The First Test

The moonless night stretched before Kairos like an uncharted path, the shadows heavier, as though they were waiting. The clearing where he stood with Elara seemed suspended in time, the air thick with anticipation. He could feel it now the change within him, a pull he couldn't ignore. The deeper he fell into this unknown world, the more he understood that nothing would ever be the same.

Elara's words reverberated in his mind: The time has come for you to embrace your true self. There are forces in this world dark forces that will stop at nothing to keep you from fulfilling your destiny.

He wasn't sure what these forces were, but he could feel their presence, creeping at the edges of his consciousness. Something dark, something ancient. His connection to the moon had not only opened his eyes to his true nature but to the dangers lurking in the shadows.

"Are you ready?" Elara's voice broke through his thoughts, soft yet filled with a quiet intensity.

He nodded, although uncertainty gnawed at him. Could he truly be ready for whatever lay ahead? He had just begun to understand the magnitude of his power, and yet Elara was asking him to face the unknown. To step into the very world that had tried to bury him, to reclaim the strength he had forgotten.

"I don't know," Kairos admitted, his voice tinged with doubt. "But I'll do what I must."

Elara studied him for a moment, her eyes searching his face as if looking for something. "The moon calls to you, Kairos. And you must answer. But first, you must learn to control the power inside you. You are not just a man; you are a guardian of the night."

The words struck him like a hammer. Guardian of the night. His breath caught in his throat. What did that even mean? He had spent so many years wandering, disconnected from his true self, and now he was supposed to step into a role he didn't understand?

Before he could voice his concerns, Elara raised a hand, silencing him. "There is no time to question. The moon demands that you take the first step."

She stepped back, her eyes glowing faintly in the dark. She motioned toward the edge of the clearing, where the forest seemed to part in the distance, revealing a narrow, winding path. It was an inviting path, but there was something unsettling about it. It felt like a doorway to a place he wasn't meant to enter yet one he couldn't ignore.

"Follow that path," Elara instructed. "And face what lies beyond. The first test is upon you."

Kairos swallowed hard. A test. It was one thing to be thrust into this new reality, but to face a test? He was still trying to grasp the truth of what had been revealed to him. Still learning what it meant to be bound to the moon, to feel the wolf stirring inside him. Could he truly pass whatever challenge awaited him?

"I don't know if I'm ready for this," Kairos said, his voice barely above a whisper.

"You are ready," Elara replied firmly. "Trust in yourself. And in the moon."

With that, she stepped aside, her gaze never leaving him. Kairos stood at the edge of the clearing, his heart pounding in his chest. The path before him was shrouded in mystery, but he couldn't turn back now. The journey had already begun. And there was no turning away from his fate.

Taking a deep breath, Kairos stepped forward.

The moment his foot touched the path, he felt a shift in the air. The breeze that had been so calm moments before now carried an edge, a whisper of something dark, something ancient. It was as though the forest itself was holding its breath, waiting for him to make his move. The path seemed to stretch out infinitely before him, the trees on either side closing in like silent watchers.

As he walked deeper into the woods, the sounds of the night grew louder cicadas, rustling leaves, distant hoots of owls but there was an undercurrent of something else. A low hum. A vibration in the very air, like a warning.

Kairos's instincts kicked in, and his senses sharpened, the pull of the moon guiding him as it had when he first touched the stone. The energy within him surged, just beneath the surface. He could feel the power growing stronger, like a storm gathering on the horizon. But it was also unfamiliar, wild. He had never had to control it before. He had never had to face it head-on.

He moved forward, his feet light on the forest floor, though his mind was heavy with uncertainty. The path curved, leading him to a small clearing, and it was here that the first test revealed itself.

At the center of the clearing stood a figure a dark silhouette, a figure shrouded in shadow. Kairos's breath caught in his throat as he stepped closer. The figure's form was tall and imposing, its presence radiating power. The air around it seemed to shimmer, as if the very space between them was thick with magic.

The figure's eyes gleamed in the dark, two piercing lights that burned with an unholy intensity. A voice, low and menacing, cut through the silence.

"Do you seek to claim your place among the stars, child of the moon?" The voice was neither male nor female, but something far older, something primal.

Kairos didn't know how to answer. He could feel the weight of the question pressing down on him, his heart pounding. Was he worthy? Could he really claim his place among the stars?

"I seek to understand who I am," he said, his voice firm, though it wavered slightly. "I seek to embrace what I've forgotten."

The figure laughed, a low, echoing sound that seemed to reverberate through the very earth beneath his feet. "You seek understanding? Knowledge? Power? You are nothing but a lost child, stumbling in the dark. And yet…" The figure's form shifted, a flicker of movement that sent a chill down Kairos's spine. "Perhaps you are more than that."

Kairos stood his ground, despite the fear rising in his chest. He didn't understand the creature before him, but he could feel the truth in its words he was lost. But not for long.

"What must I do?" Kairos asked, his voice steady now, his breath slow and measured. He had no choice but to face this challenge head-on. This was his test. His first test.

The figure's eyes glowed brighter, as though it could see into his very soul. "Survive the darkness. Embrace the wolf within you. Only then will you be worthy of the moon's blessing."

Before Kairos could react, the figure vanished into the shadows, leaving him alone in the clearing.

But the darkness did not leave.

It was as though the very air around him had thickened, becoming oppressive and suffocating. The shadows seemed to stretch and grow, swallowing the light, making it difficult to breathe. A whisper, faint but insistent, began to fill his mind.

Embrace the wolf. Let the darkness come.

He closed his eyes, feeling the wolf stir within him. The power inside him roared to life, urging him to give in, to let go of his fear and embrace the untamed energy coursing through his veins. He had to control it. He had to channel it. But how?

A growl escaped his lips, and before he could stop it, his form began to shift. His bones cracked and reformed, his senses heightened to an almost unbearable degree. The forest around him seemed to pulse with energy, the very air vibrating with the power of the moon.

Kairos opened his eyes, now seeing through the wolf's eyes, and he felt the darkness retreat. The light of the moon, faint but growing stronger, pushed back the shadows, revealing the path ahead.

He had passed the first test. But there would be more. And the road ahead would not be easy.
