Chapter 1 - 001

"Mhmm," a young man mumbled awake with a frown creasing his brows as he squinted his eyes, feeling the morning sunrays falling over his face.

"Who left the blinds open?" he muttered in irritation as he turned to his right.

After feeling that the light wasn't hitting directly on his eyes anymore, he opened his eyes, revealing two bright golden eyes.

He then glanced towards the clock on the table beside him, 'It's only 7,' he thought inwardly.

But nonetheless, the young man got up, sitting on the bed as he rubbed his eyes; he still felt groggy as he had never woken up this early before.

'Tsk, this must be her doing! Damn you!' He cursed inwardly as he stood up.

The room he was in was a small bedroom with a window to the left of the bed and a computer to its opposite.

'I will get back at you!' the man exclaimed inwardly as he trudged towards the door.

CLICK

Opening it, the young man entered a hallway with two other rooms adjacent to him. At the end of the hallway was another door that led to the bathroom.

The young man then turned right, walking towards the stairs while still rubbing his eyes.

The stairs led to another hallway and, as the man stepped in, he heard the sounds of the TV coming from his left; he knew his sisters were awake.

But the young man ignored them for now as he turned to his right, entering the kitchen.

SNIFF

As soon as he did so, a delicious aroma filled the air, causing his mouth to water while his eyes locked onto the woman who was cooking it.

"Mom," the young man called out as he walked towards her.

The woman turned around; she appeared to be a woman in her early 40s with long black hair that was tied in a ponytail.

She wore a black turtleneck T-shirt over her voluptuous body with blue jeans, while her golden eyes shone brightly as she looked at her son.

"Max, you're awake!" Ervina exclaimed in surprise; she had never seen her son wake up this early before.

Max nodded his head sleepily while he pinched his nose in irritation, "Lily opened the blinds!" he complained.

CHUCKLE

Ervina chuckled at her children's antics; she shook her head slightly and walked towards her son, "Go brush your teeth; breakfast will be ready in a few minutes."

She then kissed him on his cheek before chuckling once more and turned around.

Max nodded in reply and walked towards the bathroom in the hall.

He then brushed his teeth in a few minutes and walked into the kitchen once more, but his face scrunched in mild annoyance when he heard a mocking voice.

"Well, well, well, look who decided to wake up early. To what do we owe this pleasure, Your Majesty!?"

Max narrowed his eyes as he turned to the dining table on his right.

It was a young woman in her late teens with the same features as him, but with a mischievous glint in her golden eyes, who grinned as she looked at him.

Max narrowed his eyes further but decided to stay silent. He then resumed walking towards the dining table when the woman said,

"Aww, what happened, my little brother? Are you upset?"

Max now glared at his big sister; he opened his mouth and was about to say something, but before he could do so,

"Lily, stop bullying him. He's our brother!" a woman sitting opposite her, who looked like an exact copy of Lily said.

Max's expression softened as he turned to his other sister, Sarah. She was always kind and loving to him, unlike her annoying twin.

"Hmph," Lily snorted at her twin while Max walked over to the table and sat beside Sarah, "Good morning, big sis." He greeted as he kissed her cheek.

"Hey, where's mine!?" Lily asked.

To her question, Max smirked at her and said, "You aren't getting one."

Lily's eyes widened in shock as he spoke and complained, "T-That's not fair!!"

"Heh, try not to prank me in the future."

Lily pointed her finger accusingly at his words; it was kind of a ritual in the household that Max would greet his family with a kiss in the morning, so it was a very big deal to Lily.

But before she could say anything further, Ervina came to the dinner table, "No fighting at the dinner table!" she said firmly.

She walked beside Lily and put the two pots she was carrying on the dinner table and turned to Lily, "Dear, you have to stop teasing your brother."

"B-But…."

"No buts," she firmly said.

Lily pouted at her mother as she replied, "...Fine."

Ervina smiled at her response and turned to Max, "And you. Young man…"

She didn't finish her sentence, and there was no need to, as Max replied, "Yes, I understand."

He then stood up from his seat and was about to walk over to Lily's when the family heard something.

DING DONG

It was the doorbell—they're having visitors.

Max frowned at the sound and turned to his mother, "Are we expecting someone?" He asked.

But Ervina shook her head while mirroring Max's frown. The twins frowned at this; they didn't have many visitors, and the ones that did so only came by during the evening.

"I'll go check it out," Max said to the women and walked towards the hallway.

DING DONG

His frown deepened when he heard another ring, but shouted, "Coming!"

CLICK

He reached the door in a few moments and opened the other, only to see a brown-haired woman standing in front of him with a panicked look on her face.

"Aunt Rachel!" Max exclaimed in surprise as he let down his guard while looking at the middle-aged woman. It was their neighbour and a friend of his mother.

But Max got bewildered when he heard her words, "My prince, where is Her Majesty? I need to speak to her immediately!"

"....Eh?" Max was shocked when he heard her words, 'Did I hear her correctly!?' he wondered to himself.

"Mom's in the kitchen," he answered her amid his confusion, "but why are you calling me prince?" He asked.

Rachel's eyes went wide as she realised her error. Her heartbeat quickened while her eyes darted around as she tried to think of an excuse.

Max's brows creased further when he noticed her odd behaviour. He was about to point it out, but suddenly,

"Your Majesty, you have to return; there is an emergency!" Rachel exclaimed as she went down on her knees.

"What the….?" Max exclaimed out loud in confusion. But then he followed the woman's gaze, who was looking past him and turned around.

Behind him was Ervina, standing tall; her loving face was nowhere to be found.

The air seemed to vibrate in her sheer presence as her kind smile was replaced with a cold and indifferent look as she muttered, "Speak."
