The Blackwood University campus was buzzing with students busy with their academic routines coming and going between the college buildings.
In the middle of all these buildings for different courses is the Computer Science building, a building with a modern glass and steel structure, reflecting the afternoon sun, illuminating the intense rhythm of study that took place there every day.
In classroom number 16A there are several students working on their final programming projects for the month, in the midst of all these students concentrating on their programming codes is Mirai Tanaka.
Unlike all his colleagues Mirai was lost looking across the room looking at Rafaela a beautiful girl with dark skin and long straight brown hair, wearing a beautiful yellow dress that highlighted her beauty even more and he was lost in her beautiful face while she was fiddling with something on her notebook with a cute face a little annoyed with something on her screen.
It was at that moment that his cell phone vibrated on the table.
> Jhon Smith: Man, you need to see this! Tonight the biggest meteor shower of the century will take place! We have to go to Evercrest Mountain and see this up close!
Mirai raised her eyebrows. It wasn't unusual for Jhon to send excited messages about space, but something about his excitement seemed different this time. Sighing, he replied:
> Mirai: Are you sure that's all it's going to be?
Seconds later, the response came with a link to the news channel website confirming the event.
Mirai: Okay, I'll go, where are we going to observe this meteor shower?
Jhon Smith: Let's go to Evercrest Mountain, it's the best place to observe space and we can expect the meteor shower at what they say will be around 2 am tonight.
Mirai: Okay, let's go in Adam's car as usual?
Jhon Smith: Yes, at the same time as always in the dorm parking lot.
After answering Jhon, Mirai turns to her screen, still taking a quick look at Rafaela, seeing that she has already disappeared from her chair while he was talking to his friend and he continues to program.
Green characters flashed against the IDE's black background as he tested the functionality of a system he had been developing for weeks.
Mirai Tanaka: Damn... where did I go wrong? — he muttered to himself, scratching his head as he reviewed the code for the fourth time.
The noise of keyboards filled the room, mixing with the murmur of students immersed in their own work.
Mirai snapped her fingers, a habit she developed whenever she felt anxious.
After a long day of studying, the idea of relaxing with your friends seemed tempting.
He put the notebook in his backpack and left the room, heading towards the accommodation.
Entering her minimalist room, Mirai dropped her backpack next to her desk.
His bed, covered with a black blanket printed with first generation Pokemon figures, was impeccably made.
He opened his closet and grabbed a black t-shirt and a dark hoodie with a print of Squirtle wearing sunglasses.
He quickly dressed, put on his glasses and took one last look in the mirror before leaving.
In the university parking lot, his friends were already waiting for him next to Adam's black SUV.
Jhon was holding a bag with snacks, Marco was adjusting the strap of a flashlight and Adam was playing the playlist on his cell phone.
— Finally, Mr. Programmer has appeared! — Marco joked, patting Mirai on the shoulder.
— I had to finish a code, you know how it is... — replied Mirai, getting into the car.
— Programming or not, tonight is going to be historic! — said Jhon excitedly.
— If NASA is right, this will be the biggest meteor shower of the century! — Jhon said once again excitedly.
— I hope that's all it is. If it's just a bunch of dots shining in the sky, I'll charge you for the gas I spent. — Adam joked as he started the car.
With everyone settled in, Adam started the car and headed down the winding road towards Evercrest Mountain.
The interior of the car was heated and illuminated by the digital dashboard. The oaks passed quickly past the window, creating a play of shadows against the moonlight.
— Have you ever thought that maybe something comes along with this meteor shower? — Jhon suggested, looking at his friends with a twinkle in his eye. — Like... an alien life form?
— There you go again with your theories — said Marco, rolling his eyes. — If there is something out there, I think it will be something microscopic, like space bacteria.
— Or a Pokémon! — Mirai joked, smiling.
Marco sighed theatrically.
— Do you really think something like this could exist? Creatures with element-based powers? This is pure fiction. — Marco said.
— Dude, you study marine biology and still doubt that the world can be bizarre? Have you ever seen what an octopus can do? — Mirai replied.
— Worse than he has a point — Adam laughed, keeping his eyes on the road.
Jhon clapped excitedly.
— That's the vibe I like! Just imagine... what if these meteors are more than just space rocks? What if they bring something that will change the world?
Silence hovered for a moment, until Adam turned up the music.
— Well, we'll find out soon. We're almost there. — Adam spoke.
Arriving at Evercrest Mountain the landscape changes abruptly from the dense oak forest that surrounded the road to a rocky mountain with several different rocks and rock formations with almost no trees in it just a few ferns here and there and low vegetation.
— Well, I still find this mountain quite sinister. — Marco said.
— Why do you think that? — asked John.
— Well, they say that in the 90s there were several disappearances there. — Marco replied.
Everyone in the car is momentarily silent looking at Evercrest Mountain without any noise other than the sound of the car engine.
— Stop playing Marco, trying to scare us, right? All we have to do is say that Cthulhu is going to appear hahahahaha. — Mirai said.
— It should just be stories. — Marco said.
After 30 minutes they finally reached the top of Evercrest Mountain, when they got out of the car and felt the cool night air.
The sky was clear, and the stars shone brightly. Jhon quickly set up his telescope, adjusting the lenses.
While Adam was already taking their things to camp to wait until 2 am when the meteor shower will occur.
Mirai will help Adam while Marco goes to the middle of the forest to do his business.
The two manage to find a small barbecue and turn it on and with this fire the situation becomes more visible and they already get 4 beach chairs to sit on and after a while Marco comes back from the forest and sits down and Jhon continues calibrating his telescope to being able to see things from space.
— So Jhon can now see something, maybe a pokemon. — Marco joked.
— Hey, come on. — Mirai said.
— Apparently I can only see a few constellations as usual and no sign of the meteor shower should really only occur at two in the morning. —John said.
After that, everyone sat down in their beach chairs and each took a soda from Adam's coller and each took a snack from Jhon's snack bag.
— Well, another adventure for us. — Adam said.
— This is going to be one of the good ones with the right to see something that should never happen again to any other person in history. —John said.
— What do you mean, John? — Questions Mirai who was eating her snack.
— Well, these meteors from this meteor shower will come from outside our galaxy, so they should never pass through here again. — Jhon replied while looking at the stars in the sky.
After hours of everyone talking and waiting, the scheduled time for the meteor shower finally arrived.
—Guys... look at this — Jhon said in a low voice.
Everyone raised their heads. The horizon began to glow with trails of light cutting through the darkness. At first, small points of light crossed the sky, but, in a matter of minutes, the spectacle intensified. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of meteors of every possible color streaked across the skies, as if the universe were on fire.
—This… this is unbelievable! — Marco exclaimed.
— It looks bigger than anything I've ever seen before... — Adam said, swallowing hard.
Suddenly, a blue flash flashed across the sky, followed by a subtle explosion. One of the meteors looked different, leaving a luminous trail as it descended rapidly.
— Hey... that one over there... — Mirai pointed to the blue meteor, which seemed to be getting closer than it should.
The friends exchanged apprehensive glances. What started as a simple night of fun was about to become something much bigger than anyone could have imagined...
