Chapter 22 - “The Truth in the Shadows”

Gabriel

I opened my mouth, but no words came. Not because I didn't know what to say—but because I knew there was no right answer.

Isaac stood before me, arms crossed, his gaze as sharp as the blade at his belt.

"What is your dream?"

His voice was calm, almost casual. But I knew this wasn't a test. Not a psychological game.

He truly wanted to know.

I hesitated.

Isaac Crowe

My eyes narrowed.

I hadn't expected that.

Michael had answered immediately. Raphael had been angry, but honest. But Gabriel?

Gabriel was silent.

I stepped closer. "I don't have all night."

His jaw clenched. Then, in a quiet voice, he said:

"I don't want to survive."

"Then what?" I asked.

He exhaled. His gaze was calm, but behind it, I saw a weariness that had nothing to do with our training.

"I want to make sure my brothers survive."

I said nothing.

He continued.

"If one of us has to die, then it should be me."

Gabriel

Maybe I told him because I knew he was the only one who could understand.

Because he was someone who had already accepted that hope was just another lie.

Isaac looked at me as if I had just answered a question he already knew the answer to.

Then he simply said:

"Stupid."

Isaac Crowe

"Stupid?" Gabriel frowned.

I sighed. "You don't have a goal. Just an ending."

He stared at me.

I turned away. "I don't waste my time on men who have already decided to die. I train hunters."

I left him standing there.

But I knew he would think about my words.

And maybe, just maybe, one day he would understand.
