Choosing the Future's Harvest
At the seed vendor's stall, Yiling examined rows of packets with a discerning eye. The farmer raised his brows as she picked out not only the standard vegetable seeds—cabbage, carrots, potatoes—but also less conventional ones.
"Peppers? Tomatoes? Eggplants? People barely grow these here. You'd be wasting good land, girl," the farmer said skeptically.
"They'll grow well near the river," Yiling replied with quiet confidence. "And in time, people will pay plenty for these."
She didn't stop there. From another vendor, she bought beans, corn, and even the seeds for herbs like cilantro and parsley—plants that had yet to gain the popularity she knew was inevitable.
By the time she returned home, her basket was brimming with the promise of a better future.
