Chapter 4 - shattered heart

As I sat in the school library, I couldn't help but think about the impending conversation I was about to have with Nathan. I had been preparing myself for the worst, but I didn't expect it to happen at that exact moment. Just as I was trying to distract myself from the thoughts of what could go wrong, Nathan approached me, his eyes locking onto mine.

"Hi, Nelissa," he said, his voice casual, yet laced with a hint of nervousness.

I tried to sound nonchalant, but my heart was racing. "Hi, Nathan. How was your night?" I asked, attempting to make small talk.

"It was fine," he replied. "Eliana made it fun." His eyes flickered towards me, but he quickly looked away, avoiding my gaze.

I felt a pang of jealousy, but I tried to push it aside. Just then, Eliana appeared out of nowhere, greeting Nathan with a kiss on the lips. She completely ignored my presence, and I felt a surge of anger and hurt.

"Hi, babe," Eliana said, caressing Nathan's chest. "How have you been?"

Nathan's eyes lit up as he gazed at Eliana, and he asked, "How was your day?"

As they began to kiss again, I couldn't bear it anymore. I exploded, my voice rising above the quiet atmosphere of the library. "Did you two realize I'm here?" I demanded, trying to sound tough, but my eyes betrayed my emotions.

Eliana turned to me, a smirk on her face. "Oh, and who are you?" she retorted, her tone dripping with sarcasm.

I stood up, my heart pounding in my chest. "I'm his girlfriend," I said, trying to sound confident, but my voice trembled slightly.

Nathan turned to me, his eyes filled with a mix of guilt and regret. "I was about to tell you, Nelissa, but Eliana came in," he said, his voice gentle, but firm. "I'm sorry, Nelissa, but I'm not your ideal man. As you can see, we could both have a better life without each other. And...there's no chance of us getting back together. I'm in love with Eliana."

I felt like I had been punched in the gut. My heart, which had been racing just moments before, seemed to stop beating altogether. I couldn't breathe, couldn't think. All I could do was stand there, frozen in shock and pain.

As Nathan's words hung in the air, I felt a wave of emotions wash over me. I was angry, hurt, and betrayed all at once. I wanted to scream, to cry, to lash out at Nathan and Eliana. But I didn't. Instead, I stood there, my eyes fixed on Nathan's, my heart heavy with sorrow.

Suddenly, I felt a hand on my shoulder. It was Karen, my best friend. She had been watching the scene unfold from across the library, and she had come to my side to offer her support.

"Nelissa, are you okay?" she whispered, her voice soft and concerned.

I shook my head, unable to speak. Karen pulled me into a hug, holding me tightly as I struggled to process my emotions.

"We need to get out of here," she said, her voice firm. "Let's go somewhere and talk about this."

I nodded, still feeling numb and shocked. As we walked out of the library, Karen's arm around my shoulders, I couldn't help but wonder what the future held for me. Had I really lost Nathan to Eliana? And what did this mean for our relationship,

As the afternoon classes came to a close, I felt a surge of determination coursing through my veins. I couldn't just let Nathan walk away without a fight. I pushed my way through the crowds of students streaming out of the classrooms, my eyes scanning the hallway for a glimpse of his familiar figure. And then, I saw him - strolling alone, his backpack slung casually over his shoulder.

I quickened my pace, my heart pounding in my chest. "Hey, Nathan!" I called out, my voice ringing out across the hallway. He turned, his eyes narrowing as he saw me approaching him.

"Nathan, can I talk to you for a minute?" I asked, trying to sound calm despite the turmoil of emotions churning inside me. He raised an eyebrow, his expression skeptical. "Whatever," he replied, his tone dismissive.

I took a deep breath, my pride faltering for a moment as I prepared to plead my case. "Nathan, I... I'm sorry if I've ever offended you," I said, my voice trembling slightly. "We can actually make this work again. I really can't bear to lose you, that's why I'm dropping my pride aside to say this. Please, Nathan, don't hurt me.

But instead of the sympathetic ear I had hoped for, Nathan's face twisted into a sneer. "You still don't get it, Nelissa?" he spat, his voice dripping with venom. "I hate you. You're just a freak."

I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, my breath knocked out of me. I stumbled backwards, my eyes wide with shock and hurt. Nathan's words cut deep, each one a razor-sharp blade slicing through my heart.

"I didn't know you'd be this clingy," he continued, his voice dripping with disdain. "I won't waste one more second on you. I'll be seeing Eliana soon."

With that, he turned and walked away, leaving me standing alone in the hallway, feeling shattered and humiliated. I watched him go, my eyes burning with tears as I realized that I had lost him forever. The pain of his rejection was like a weight crushing me, making it hard to breathe, hard to think.
