Chapter 5 - 5. School

The crisp morning air hit Aaron's face as he stepped out of the house, a stark contrast to the warmth he'd left behind. He took a deep breath, filling his lungs with the cool spring breeze, the scent of green leaves entering his nostrils. The sky above was a pale blue, streaked with wispy clouds that promised a clear day ahead.

Aaron adjusted the straps of his backpack, settling the weight comfortably across his shoulders. He tapped the side of his wrist, activating the holographic display of his personal device. The time glowed in soft blue numerals, floating just above his skin. With a practiced gesture, he swiped through notifications, dismissing reminders about upcoming assignments and messages from friends.

Setting off down the familiar path to school, his shoes clicked rhythmically against the synthecrete sidewalk. The material, a recent innovation, was designed to absorb kinetic energy from footsteps and convert it into power for the city grid.

The neighborhood was coming to life around him. Garage doors hummed open, revealing gleaming hover-cars and personal transport pods ready for the morning commute. The soft whir of automated drones filled the air as they went about their daily tasks, from delivering packages to maintaining the lush vegetation that lined the streets.

He passed by houses with windows that adjusted their opacity automatically, responding to the increasing sunlight. As he walked, Aaron made a conscious effort to focus on his surroundings. The neighborhood gradually transformed around him. The residential area gave way to more mixed-use spaces. Sleek buildings with living walls of vegetation stretched skyward, their surfaces capturing sunlight and converting it into energy. The air seemed fresher here, thanks to the abundance of greenery integrated into the urban landscape.

He passed by a local market, where holographic displays showcased the day's fresh produce. The vibrant colors of fruits and vegetables, some familiar and others exotic, created a dazzling array. Vendors were setting up their stalls, their loud voices an unpleasant murmur in the morning air. The scent of freshly baked bread wafted from a nearby bakery, making Aaron's stomach rumble despite his recent breakfast.

A group of younger children zoomed past on their hover-scooters, their laughter echoing in the air. Aaron smiled, remembering when he used to ride one of those to school. Now, at seventeen, he preferred the solitude of walking. It gave him time to think, to prepare for the day ahead.

As he approached a crosswalk, the signal changed automatically, detecting his presence. The synthecrete beneath his feet hummed softly, guiding pedestrians safely across the street.

He passed by a construction site where robotic workers were assembling a new building with incredible speed and precision. The air hummed with the sound of their activity. Aaron watched for a moment, fascinated by the choreographed movements of the machines, each one performing its task with unerring accuracy.

A public holo-board flickered to life as he walked by, displaying the day's news. Headlines about breakthroughs in medical nanotechnology and an ascendant reaching the middle of the conduit stage scrolled past.

As he neared the school, more students began to appear on the streets. Some walked like him, while others arrived on various modes of transport – from sleek electric bikes to small personal hovercrafts. The chatter of his peers filled the air, discussions about upcoming tests, the latest viral holo-games, and weekend plans creating a familiar backdrop of teenage life.

Aaron's wrist device vibrated softly, a reminder notification popping up on the holographic display. "History oral exam today - Chapter 7: The Great Cataclysm." He groaned inwardly.

The school building came into view, an impressive structure blending classic design with modern materials. Solar panels covered the roof, and the walls were embedded with air-purifying nanocatalysts. A holographic banner floated above the entrance, proclaiming: "Embracing Knowledge, Shaping the Future."

Groups of students milled about the entrance, some rushing in while others lingered, squeezing in last-minute conversations before the start of classes. Aaron recognized faces from his various classes.

Taking a deep breath, Aaron steeled himself for the day ahead.

The school's AI system scanned him and his holo watch as he entered, its pleasant voice welcoming him by name and reminding him of his first class. "Good morning, Aaron. Your first class, Advanced Material Science, begins in 15 minutes in Room 301. Don't forget your holo-projector for today's practical demonstration."

Aaron merged into the flow of students in the hallway. The corridor was a riot of activity – lockers that responded to biometric signatures swung open and closed, holographic displays showed personalized schedules and reminders, and small cleaning drones weaved through the crowd, maintaining the pristine condition of the school.

He made his way to his locker, the panel sliding open at his approach. Inside, his school materials were neatly organized – holo pad, a holo-projector for interactive lessons, and a few physical notebooks for those classes that still valued handwritten work. Aaron grabbed what he needed for his morning classes, his movements automatic as his mind wandered.

Cliques of students gathered in corners, sharing gossip and laughter. The nervous energy of those who hadn't studied for tests was palpable. Teachers moved purposefully through the halls, their expressions a mix of enthusiasm for the day ahead and resigned preparedness for whatever challenges their students might present.

Aaron joined the stream of students heading to their respective classrooms. The day stretched before him.

As he entered the classroom for Advanced Material Science, the teacher's voice cut through the chatter, calling for attention. Aaron slid into his seat, powering up his holo-projector and trying to focus his mind on the subject.

The teacher, Mr. Thompson, was a tall, lanky man with a shock of white hair and eyes that sparkled with intelligence. He had always tried to make the most complex scientific concepts seem accessible and exciting, with varying degrees of successs.

"Good morning, class," Mr. Thompson began, his voice filled with enthusiasm. "Today, we're going to explore the mysterious world of quantum physics especially entanglement. Who can tell me what quantum entanglement is?"

A few hands shot up, and Mr. Thompson called on a student in the front row. "Quantum entanglement is when two particles become linked, so that the state of one instantly influences the state of the other, no matter the distance between them," the student recited, clearly having memorized the definition.

"Excellent," Mr. Thompson said, nodding approvingly. "Now, let's delve a little deeper. Imagine if we could harness this phenomenon to create instantaneous communication across vast distances. What kind of applications could this have in our world?"

The class erupted in a flurry of ideas, ranging from advanced military communications to long distance teleportation and interstellar travel.

As the discussion continued, Aaron's holo-projector displayed a series of interactive simulations, illustrating the principles of quantum entanglement. He manipulated the holographic particles, watching as their states changed in perfect synchronization, no matter how far apart they were moved.

The bell rang, signaling the end of the class, and Aaron gathered his things. His next class was History, a subject that Aaron found both fascinating and frustrating. The textbooks were filled with dry, factual accounts of past events, but Aaron couldn't help but feel that there was a deeper story hidden beneath the surface, a narrative of power and potential that went beyond the mundane.

The morning had been a whirlwind of classes and interactions, each one adding to the growing sense of anticipation and pressure that Aaron felt. As he made his way to his history class, the familiar hum of the school's AI system greeted him, guiding him through the crowded hallways. The holographic banners floating above the entrance to each classroom reminded him of the day's schedule and upcoming events.

Aaron stepped into the history classroom, the scent of old books and the soft murmur of his classmates' conversations enveloping him. He took his usual seat near the back, where he could observe the room without drawing too much attention to himself. The classroom was a mix of familiar faces and new acquaintances, each student carrying their own hopes and fears for the year ahead.

Just as the students were settling in, the homeroom teacher, Mr. Harris, entered the room. Mr. Harris was a rather short and stubby but with imposing figure and a stern expression that hid his kind heart. He had a way of commanding respect without needing to raise his voice, a quality that Aaron admired. The chatter died down as Mr. Harris took his position at the front of the class, his presence alone enough to command attention.

"Good morning, class," Mr. Harris began, his voice steady and authoritative. "I hope you're all settling well. As you know, this is an important year for all of you. It's a year of preparation, growth, and, for some of you, the beginning of a journey towards becoming an Ascendant."

A murmur of excitement and nervousness rippled through the room. The idea of becoming an Ascendant was a dream shared by many, a goal that required dedication, hard work, and a touch of luck. The Ascendant Ability Analysis was the way to see those who are able to walk the path to Ascension, but the journey was fraught with challenges and uncertainties. It happened three month before the entrance exam.

Mr. Harris continued, "In less than six months, you will be taking the entrance exam that will determine your future. This exam is not just about academic knowledge; it's about showcasing your potential, your resilience, and your ability to adapt to the ever-changing world around you."

As Mr. Harris spoke, the history teacher, Ms. Lee, quietly entered the classroom. She stood silently in the corner, observing the students and listening to Mr. Harris's words.

Aaron felt a knot form in his stomach. The entrance exam was a daunting prospect, a test that would evaluate not just his knowledge but his entire being. He knew that his performance would determine his eligibility for advanced training and, ultimately, his chances of becoming an Ascendant.

"Preparation is key," Mr. Harris emphasized. "You need to focus on your studies, but also on your physical and mental development. The path to Ascension is not an easy one, but it is a rewarding one. Those who are able to walk in will succeed and have the opportunity to push the boundaries of human potential and contribute to the future of our society."

"But not all of you are going to be able to become an ascendant but don't worry, all of you can still have meaningful impact on the lives of the people around you or even the mankind, if you try enough, develop useful materials, invent new technologies and many more."

The room was silent, the weight of Mr. Harris's words settling over the students like a heavy blanket. Aaron could feel the tension in the air, the mix of excitement and fear that came with the realization of the challenges ahead.

"Remember," Mr. Harris added. "It's about community, about working together to build a better future. You are not alone in this journey. You have each other, your teachers, and the support of the entire school community and the federation."

Aaron looked around the room, taking in the faces of his classmates. Some looked determined, others nervous, but all shared a common goal: to succeed and make a difference.

"In the coming months, you will face challenges that will test your limits," Mr. Harris said. "But remember, every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Embrace these opportunities, learn from them, and use them to become stronger."

"And finally," Mr. Harris concluded, "remember that your success is not just about you. It's about the future of our kind, about the legacy you will leave behind. You have the potential to make a difference, to shape the world in ways that were once unimaginable. So, prepare well, work hard, and never lose sight of your goals."

The room was silent for a moment, the weight of Mr. Harris's words lingering in the air. Then, slowly, the chatter began to rise again, filled with a new sense of purpose and determination. Aaron could feel the energy in the room, the collective resolve to succeed and make a difference.

As Mr. Harris finished his speech, he nodded to Ms. Lee, who stepped forward to take her place at the front of the class. Mr. Harris exited the room, leaving the students with a mix of anticipation and resolve.

Ms. Lee began the lesson, her voice steady and authoritative. "Today, we're going to discuss Chapter 7: The Great Cataclysm, and I am going to ask some questions from students for the oral exam. This is going to count towards your final's, so you better have prepared well for it."

"So Aaron, what caused the great cataclysm."
