A Simple A Simple Day
Three days had already passed since the incident. Fred had been discharged from the hospital. The doctor had warned him not to experience stress or anxiety due to his severe injuries. Now, he lay in bed, quiet and exhausted. His gaze was fixed on a framed picture of his late father hanging on the wall. He felt as if the picture was trying to tell him something, but it couldn't find the words.
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed, and the door opened. In that moment, his uncle Jack and Jack's daughter, Ashley, entered the room. Fred had despised his uncle since childhood, and though Ashley had feelings for him, he saw her as arrogant and stubborn. That was why he couldn't stand her. But now, here they were, standing side by side.
Jack approached him, giving him a dismissive glance before extending his hand for a handshake. When it was Ashley's turn, she greeted him with a fake smile. Fred didn't miss the way Jack had forced his hand up and asked, "How are you feeling?"
Fred replied, "Thanks, Uncle. I'm feeling a bit better now."
He was about to ask how they had found out about his injury when he suddenly remembered—he had stayed at his uncle's hospital.
Jack took a deep breath and asked again, "So, how did you fall?"
Fred recounted everything—how he had fallen, how he had gotten injured, and everything surrounding the event. After listening, Jack and Ashley left. As soon as they were gone, Fred felt a sense of relief. But then, Sheila came to his mind.
He picked up his phone and sent her a message. It didn't go through. Seeing no response from her, he texted Orlich instead. At least their houses were close to each other; maybe Orlich knew where she was. However, Orlich simply replied, "I have no idea." That response only added to Fred's unease.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, and Richard, Ethan, Rima, and Victoria entered. They greeted him warmly, and soon, the conversation turned to their upcoming graduation, which was only a few days away. Their discussions flowed seamlessly from one topic to another.
By the time night fell, it was time to say goodbye. One by one, everyone left for their homes. Fred glanced at his phone once more, but there was still no news from Sheila. He was exhausted from the day. Pulling the blanket over himself, he closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.
