'I'm bored. Why cant anything here be fun.'
*Somewhere in the Universe*
Star by star, darkness spread faster than the light that brought life to the universe, destroying the stars completely, breaking the laws of thermodynamics apart.
*Valis, Imperial Star System*
"Vail, you need to sleep, you shouldn't stay awake this late every night."
"Yeah Mom, I know. I'll go to bed soon. It's just that the sky feels...darker."
"Really? It looks like the same sky we would stare at every night when you were little, though you would always fall asleep after just a few minutes."
"Those nights, that darkness, it was scary. We never knew what we were looking at, or what we couldn't see, but it was also beautiful. The stars twinkling millions of miles away, the nebulas creating clouds of pinks, oranges, and greens, and the moon illuminating the sky in the absence of the sun.
"I don't know when the day will come when we will see those stars no longer, and the darkness will consume everything in its wake, but I do know that you will push past every obstacle you face to survive and overcome the circumstances that surround you."
"Mom.."
*RING* *RING* *RING* *RING* *RING* *RING*
"What"
As Vail checked his watch, a hologram appeared, one only the wearer could see. The Light blue screen pulsated as it displayed a message.
*Emergency Broadcast. Seek Shelter Immediately. This is not a drill. Emergency Broadcast. Seek Shelter Immediately. This is not a drill.*
Vail looked back up at the sky, but it once again seemed darker. The sky was now losing stars, at first slowly, then faster, and faster, and faster. Stars were disappearing by the second, and soon Vail's Mom, Veta, noticed the phenomenon, too.
"Vail we need to get inside now! LET'S GO! Head into the Basement!"
They started running into the basement, fear spreading into the depths of their hearts. Why were stars disappearing? Were they in danger? As these questions appeared in Vails mind as they arrived in the basement and looked out the window past the egress, and into the void of space. What was one star disappearing per second before was now ten stars, then 100 stars, then darkness. The last visible star turned black.
Veta couldn't understand how was this possible, the stars that once filled the night sky felt like illusions, disappearing without a trace leaving only the moon in the sky, but it too was starting to fade. The darkness seemingly slowed down just to instill more terror into the people of the planet Valis. How could this happen so soon!?
"The darkness… it's watching all of us. It's like it's laughing at our helplessness." Vail didn't know why he could feel these things in the darkness, but he knew one thing, what he had felt wanted to consume all light, and all living matter.
Soon tears started to form. They both knew this calamity wouldn't stop, it would end all life on Valis.
"Listen Vail. No matter what happens, I want you to know how proud I am of the man you have become. I love you so much, more than words could ever describe. You were my greatest accomplishment. Now FIGHT, SCREAM, AND SURVIVE!" she said tears now pouring down her face and mine.
"Mom! MOMMM!"
The world turned black.
(A/N) I want to say I'm a college athlete and this is a passion project, so I can't promise consistent uploads at specific times. I do plan on making this as perfect as my skills(although limited) will let me make it so I hope you enjoy my first full effort novel. Criticisms/suggestions encouraged :)
