Chapter 10 - A Noble's Resolve

The following morning dawned crisp and clear, golden sunlight streaming through the tall windows of the manor. The scent of dew-laden grass and blooming flowers wafted through the air, a serene contrast to the tense events of the previous day.

Cale was already up, dressed in his usual crisp attire, as he made his way to the training grounds behind the estate. The space was rarely used, its grounds marked only by faint scuffs on the cobblestones from occasional sparring sessions between the guards.

Lady Althea awaited him there, dressed in practical riding clothes that allowed for ease of movement. Her hair was tied back, and a look of determined anticipation gleamed in her eyes.

"Good morning, my Lady," Cale greeted with a polite bow.

"Good morning, Cale. I'm ready," she declared, her voice steady.

He nodded approvingly. "We'll begin with conditioning exercises to build your strength and stamina. Follow my lead."

They started with basic stretches, Althea mimicking Cale's precise movements. Despite her noble upbringing, she showed remarkable focus and adaptability. Her brow furrowed in concentration as she pushed herself through the unfamiliar exercises.

After several minutes, Cale instructed, "Now we'll move to footwork. Proper stance and movement are essential in any form of combat."

He demonstrated a balanced stance, his feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent. "Maintain this position. It allows for swift movement and stability."

Althea mirrored his stance, wobbling slightly before finding her balance.

"Good. Now, step forward with your leading foot, then pivot."

They repeated the drill until her movements became smoother. Sweat beaded on her forehead, but she persevered without complaint.

After an hour, Cale called for a break. He handed her a canteen of water, which she accepted gratefully.

"You're doing well, my Lady. Most would have given up by now," he remarked.

She wiped her brow, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "I'm not most people, Cale."

"That much is clear," he agreed.

As they resumed training, a figure approached from the manor—Lord Rowan, Althea's father. His imposing presence was tempered by a curious expression as he observed their session.

"Father," Althea greeted, straightening herself.

"Good morning, Althea. And Master Cale," Lord Rowan acknowledged with a nod. "I must admit, this is an unexpected sight."

"I asked Cale to train me," Althea explained confidently. "I want to be prepared for any dangers that may come."

Lord Rowan's brows lifted slightly, but he did not object. "A commendable decision. The world is indeed becoming more perilous."

Turning to Cale, he added, "I trust you will guide her well."

"It is my honor and duty, my Lord," Cale responded respectfully.

Lord Rowan gave a satisfied nod before departing. Althea watched him go, her resolve only strengthening.

"He didn't try to stop me," she noted.

"Your father recognizes your determination," Cale said. "And so do I."

They continued their session until the sun climbed high in the sky. By the end, Althea's movements had noticeably improved.

As they walked back toward the manor, Althea spoke thoughtfully. "Thank you, Cale. For believing in me."

He met her gaze, his voice steady. "You've earned that belief, my Lady."

The path they walked was just beginning, but Cale knew that Lady Althea's resolve would shape not only her destiny but perhaps the fate of the entire realm.
