Chapter 1 - moving day

As I gazed out the window, the warm sunlight danced across my face, illuminating the mix of emotions swirling inside me. Today was the day moving day! Sixteen years of waiting, and it was finally here. I took one last look at the cramped, rundown backyard that had been my reality for so long. A wave of nostalgia washed over me, but it was quickly replaced by excitement and anticipation.

Just then, a chilly hand grasped my shoulder, breaking the spell. It was my little brother, David, flashing a bright smile. "Mummy's calling you!" he chirped. I trailed him outside, where my mom was chatting with my elder sister, Sandra. As soon as she spotted me, her expression turned stern. "Olive, what were you doing inside? Everyone's working hard to move our things, and you're...?"

I met her gaze, a hint of mischief in my voice. "Sorry, Mum, I was arranging my books." It was a small act of defiance, but today was too special to let anything ruin it.

Six hours of chaos and packing later, we finally arrived at our new apartment. As we stepped inside, a collective gasp of wonder echoed through the rooms. It was beautiful a spacious, three bedroom haven that seemed like a dream come true. My siblings erupted into cheers and laughter, releasing years of pent up joy. We'd been living in poverty for so long, and this was our ticket to a brighter future.

As we settled in, I couldn't shake off the excitement. I pinched myself repeatedly, half expecting to wake up from a dream. Sandra clicked away, capturing every moment on camera, while David immersed himself in a movie, his eyes aglow. Mum slipped away, her eyes brimming with tears as she remembered the struggles we'd faced. Our dad had abandoned us, leaving her to raise us alone in a cramped single room.

But today marked a new beginning. We'd taken our first step toward a better life, and nothing could ever diminish the pride and accomplishment we felt.

The next morning, I sprang out of bed, feeling refreshed and renewed. As I rushed to get ready for work, I realized I'd forgotten my inhaler a vital reminder of my asthma. I sprinted back, grabbed it, and took a deep breath, ready to face whatever the day had in store.
