I smiled as we walked back, she handed me the earpiece and we put it back on. "You know you're right, I am grateful to have you here," I said.
"Where the hell have you guys been?" Ava asked, as she and Jerry met us coming out.
"Well if we're going to ruin our lives tonight, we might as well enjoy the party," Ruby said.
"I'm gonna throw her off the balcony," Ava told me.
"Relax, besides she's right. This is a dangerous mission, so we should all enjoy the party a bit and relax," I said. Ava stared at me. It was then I noticed they had changed into bodyguards uniform. And she looked really good in it. She looked weirdly at me.
"This does not sound like you," she turned to Ruby, "what have you done to her?"
"You ladies can argue later, but right now the mafian leaders are giving their speeches," Jerry told, "and it's Cira's turn,"
We walked silently, through the crowd, Ava staring at me continuously.
"What?" I asked her as Ruby and Jerry moved forward.
"I just...are you alright?" She asked in concern. I nodded.
"Yeah...just a bit overwhelmed," I sorta lied. She stared, still a little unconvinced, but nodded.
We stood in the middle of the crowd, she and Jerry staying a few distance away. The mafian boss named Cira was actually a man in his late forties. But he has a certain dark, dangerous aura around him. He was a gruff, stone hearted, and well-feared man. I could tell by the mixture of dislike and fear each person has, glaring at him. Frankly, no one really likes any one here, but they do fear him, a lot. We waited for him to finish his speech, which our job will begin once he's done. But I was getting tired as he went on and on about how successful and mighty the Costas has been since he's reign.
A few minutes later, he finished and there was a round of applause for him, instigated mostly by his own mafia. Okay, show time.
We slowly navigated through the crowd, heading towards the room Cira entered after his speech, as the next mafian boss started his own speech. All sounds faded as I looked at the Camorran mafian leader as he stepped on stage. He looked right back at me, a sense of familiarity washing over me. Then he smiled.
I stopped. "Guys, something's wrong," I said.
"What are you talking about?" Ruby asked. He had already gone back to his speech as if nothing happened, as if I had just assumed it.
Unlike Cira, he had a calm but dangerous demeanour, the kind that is chilling. He's aura was so cold that I actually felt a chill when he looked at me. Something about his eyes told me he's the real enemy. And he knows who I am.
"Kayla? Kayla?" I zoned back in. Ava and Jerry were already beside us.
"Are you okay?" Ava asked as she held me.
"Yeah, we need to get to Cira before he leaves," Jerry said.
"I-I'm fine. Something's just not right, we need to get out of here," I said hurriedly.
"Why? What's wrong?" Ruby asked. Just then, I spotted Scar at the corner of the room, looking directly at me. He was twirling a glass of champagne. He wore a blank expression, just staring at me.
"I think it's a setup," I replied. I looked back at him, but he wasn't there anymore. I scanned the crowd but there was no single sign of him, as if I imagined it. Maybe I did.
"Kayla you need to tell us what's going on," Jerry demanded.
"W-we need to leave, somehow they know we're here," I said as I pulled Ava through the crowd, the rest followed.
"Kayla wait!" Ava called as we walked towards the exit.
"Cole, start the van," I spoke into the earpiece.
"Are you having another episode?" Ava whisper-yelled.
"What? No," I replied, "Scar knows we're here,"
She looked confused until it clicked, "Oh, but that shouldn't make you this uneasy to wanna quit the mission,"
I turned to face her as the others stopped beside us, "That's the problem, he saw us but didn't do anything, like he already knew we were coming,"
"No offence but that's kinda the one rule here," Ruby said, "No form of violence in the grand hall,"
"Yeah but that doesn't mean it won't happen outside the building," I pointed out, "the sooner we get out, the better,"
We all stepped outside the door, to the hallway. We walked down straight to the elevator and entered. The door was about to close when two men in gas masks came in and released some toxic stuff. We coughed and everyone fell to the ground. Everyone except me. I stared at the men and tackled one of them. The other one banged the back of my head with the canister he held. It made me disoriented momentarily as they dragged me out to what appeared to be the garage.
I kicked and flailed around harshly, kicking anything I came in contact with. But I started feeling weaker by every second. Whatever they had in their canister that knocked my friends out was surely getting to me now. They dragged me into a van and I saw the one face I thought I would escape from before I evidently passed out.
"You should've stayed home Kayla," he said, looking at me with what I thought was regret. But I must've imagined it, right?
