Chapter 13 - Ch. 13: Caught red-handed

Kayla pov

We sat in the car in front of the building as we waited for Scorpion. It was already 8pm and it was raining. Someone knocked on the drivers window, where I sat. I rolled down the window.

"We're here to meet Scorpion," I said. He flashed his torch on our faces, and then inside the car. He looked at us for a few seconds before switching off the torch.

 "Word?" He said harshly.

"Cobra," I said. He looked at us one more time.

"Follow me," he finally said. We both wore black suit coats for the rain and also for whatever business Scorpion was attending. Figured we might as well be professional, not that any of this is professional. We got out of the car only to be pushed on it. He wasn't alone. Two more men searched us and when they found nothing, they let us go. The guy who knocked on the window smirked and said "Sorry, protocols," I scoffed.

We walked towards what looks like a black SUV at the end of the street. They opened the door. It had four seats facing each other inside. Scorpion and Scar were already sitting on the first two. Ava and I glanced at each other before entering and sitting on the other two.

"Sorry for the inconvenience," Scorpion said referring to the search earlier, "I just had to make sure that we were safe," he emphasised, looking directly at me. Did he just smirk? Maybe I probably imagined it. Has he already found out? I'm actually starting to feel the danger of this mission. They started the car and drove off.

We drove into a lone and secluded area, which was at the outskirts of the town after driving a long time. It was a forest. Why do I feel like something would go terribly wrong. Then I spotted an abandoned building which seems to be the only building in at least one mile radius, which we were actually driving towards to. Why would anyone build that here?

Unless they ran a Mafia and need a place to run their business.

This certainly doesn't look like a place for an official business, but then again who said it was official. The car came to a stop front of the building.

"We're here boss," the man in front said to Scorpion who was busy with his phone. Judging from his features, he does not like whatever's on that screen. Eventually, we all came down from the car and strode in. The lights flickered as we walked through the passage. There were more men inside. They all stepped aside as Scorpion walked over to one of them.

"He's inside," the guy said, handing him a gun. Uh....

"Good," Scorpion said taking the gun from him, his hands in black gloves, "everyone else clear out, except you two," he said referring to us. Everyone left immediately, leaving Scar, Ava and I. Sometimes I feel like Scorpion has little control over Scar. The former then opened a door revealing another room. It was dark, except the tiny moonlight that shone through the small window at the wall. It took some time for my eyes to adjust to the darkness and when it did, I was hit with a strong sense of familiarity, like a déja vù.

There was a man tied to a chair, in the middle of the empty room. Scar switched on the light. He should be in his late fourties and looks like he was almost at the brink of death. Very battered. Ava shivered at the sight. He could barely lift his eyelid at the sudden intrusion. And when he did, he scanned each one of us before settling on Scorpion with a deep scowl mixed with fear.

"Hello Jonas, miss me?" Scorpion said to him. He spat at him but it landed on the ground instead. Scorpion tsked and scrunched down towards his eye level, using the gun to caress his face. "Now where are you're manners, hmm? Don't tell me going rogue for a few days made you lose it"

Jonas glanced at us then back to Scorpion. He must've seen the question in his face because then he said, "Ah, almost forgot. Jonas meet Kira and Haven, Kira and Haven meet the man who sabotaged my trade with Don,". I looked at the man who now looked at Scorpion with pure hatred.

"The Costas are coming for you," he said, "tell that to The Godfather,". This only annoyed Scorpion.

"I may tolerate certain things, but what I certainly hate the most is betrayal," he said as he loaded the gun. Why do I feel like he's talking to us. I glanced at Ava who seems to be having the same feeling as she looked at me.

"Here," he extended the gun, "one of you should do the honours,". I looked at Ava, who silently shook her head at me telling me not to do it. I walked towards him and collected the gun, then turned towards the man. I raised it at him. He looked at me with fear in his eyes, begging, "I have two kids, please,".

Then suddenly, everything faded except the man on the chair. But this time, it was another face. A few years younger and also very battered. He pleaded desperately, "I have a son," he had said. But I felt myself smile cynically, as I raised the gun at him. My arm was that of a child, and so was my body. I pulled the trigger, shooting him straight in the head. After which I grinned manicly. Everything changed and I was back to where I was with Scorpion and everyone else in the room.

Was that a dream or a memory, I couldn't tell. But I heard Scorpion clapping, only then did I saw the man dead, with a bullet in his head. I was confused. Somehow in my dreamland I had actually shot him. I turned to look Ava who was horrified at what I did, then she looked at me with...fear. She was terrified of me at that moment. A distant memory flooded my brain.

"What?" She said as I looked at her.

"It's just...I've never met anyone who thinks it's cool thing," I said, "they tend to get frightened, or run away but they never thought it was a good thing, or cool," I said.

"So what?" She said, leaning in, "You don't scare me," she whispers.

But now I do. I sigh inwardly as Scorpion patted my back saying bravo. I gave him the gun and walked towards her but she stepped back. To say I was hurt was an understatement. I stayed beside her, keeping my distance. The plan was to take the gun from Scorpion and threaten him with it but I just got carried away....I guess.

"Such a brave act," he said then pointed the gun at us. We both looked at him with confusion and surprise. "Now, who really are you?"

"What are you talking about?" Ava played clueless.

"Don't act stupid. Scar had his suspicions and I had my doubts, so I ordered a background check again and it came out just like last time. Both of you are civilians, love parties except Haven here do not strike me as the party type," True, "then you both waltz into the construction site and conveniently saved my life in the middle of a gunfire. Oh and did I forget to mention that you both had no gun training whatsoever but yet you shoot like pros, so," he cocked the gun, "who the fuck are you,"

At that moment, I hoped the trackers on our watches still worked because we're doomed. I'm sure James was listening because we still had our ear piece on. I need to buy us time.

"Starting the party without me? Now that's rude Dante," a very familiar voice said. Ava and I whipped our heads towards the door. And behold the least person I expected here.

"Ar...?!" Ava kicked my leg, stopping me from mentioning her name, as she glared at her who hasn't even noticed us yet. She strode over to Scorpion who lightened up upon seeing her.

"Lady Yvonne, what a surprise," –indeed. She held his chin and kissed him, and he didn't hesitate to kiss back. As much as I liked keeping him distracted from blowing our brains out, I couldn't help but clear my throat, drawing their attention. Ariel looked at us and widen her eyes in shock and a little panic, but Scorpion didn't seem to notice. Then she recovered almost too quickly as if she remembered something and smirked. I clenched my fists, while keeping a neutral face.

"Dante, who are they?" She asked innocently.

"No one important honey," he said raising the gun at us again. Just then a man busted in.

"Sir! We're under attack," he said in panic. Both Scorpion and Scar stiffened. Finally. We exhaled. Although I didn't hear the sirens, but it doesn't matter.

 "Shit," he cursed, "by who?"

"The Costas," Ava and I looked at each other.

Great! Another Mafia.

"You work for the Costas?!" Scorpion yelled at us. Fuck.

"Boss there's no time!" Scar said to him. Almost immediately, gunshot rung out in distant. They were getting close. Scorpion ran out with Ariel and the other guy, while Scar looked through the door, making sure they left. Then he walked over to us. I pushed Ava behind me, ready for an attack. He stood in front of me, and pushed a Beretta in my hand. I smiled seeing it's my favourite gun, then my smile faded as I looked at him in confusion. He patted the gun and let go. We seem to have a mutual understanding as I nodded.

Then he took one last glance at Ava and then said to me, "Protect her," he brought out another gun and dashed out. I turned to Ava who looked at me with confusion. She stepped back.

 "W-who are you?"
