Chereads / System Chronicles: Quest for change / Chapter 3 - Unlocking Potential

Chapter 3 - Unlocking Potential

Matt woke up the next morning feeling a strange mix of soreness and energy. His muscles ached from the previous night's basketball game, but it was a good kind of ache—the kind that reminded him he'd done something different, something exciting. The $100 reward from the system still sat in his mysterious account, but it was the unused Advanced Skill Token that really gnawed at his curiosity.

As he sat up on the couch, the system's voice interrupted his thoughts.

[Good morning, Host. It is recommended to use your Advanced Skill Token to unlock additional abilities.]

Matt rubbed the sleep from his eyes and muttered, "Alright, let's see what this thing can do."

A glowing screen appeared before him, listing a variety of skills under categories like Physical, Mental, and Craftsmanship. His eyes scanned the options, each more tempting than the last. There were skills like [Intermediate Cooking], [Precision Marksmanship], and even [Advanced Negotiation]. But one stood out to him immediately: [Parkour - Advanced Basics].

"Parkour?" Matt said aloud, leaning closer to the screen. "You're telling me I could run around like some action movie hero?"

[Parkour - Advanced Basics: Grants enhanced agility, balance, and coordination, allowing the user to traverse complex environments efficiently. Highly effective for urban mobility and evasion.]

He grinned. "I'll take it."

The moment he selected the skill, a warm sensation flooded his body, centering around his legs and core. Memories and movements that weren't his own began to flow into his mind—vaulting over rails, scaling walls, leaping across rooftops. It felt natural, like a part of him that had always been there but had just awakened.

Standing up, Matt stretched, testing his newfound agility. His balance felt sharper, his movements smoother. He couldn't resist the urge to try it out immediately. Throwing on his hoodie and lacing up his worn sneakers, he stepped out into the cool morning air.

The city streets were still waking up, the usual buzz of traffic and chatter muted in the early hour. Matt wandered aimlessly until he found himself at an abandoned construction site on the edge of the neighborhood. Rusty scaffolding, stacked wooden pallets, and half-finished concrete walls created a makeshift obstacle course that seemed perfect for his experiment.

Matt hesitated for a moment, the doubts creeping in. "Alright, system, let's see if this skill is as good as it sounds."

He took a running start, leaping onto a wooden pallet and vaulting over it in one smooth motion. His feet landed lightly on the other side, barely making a sound. The movements felt… easy, almost second nature. Encouraged, he moved to the scaffolding, climbing it with surprising speed. His hands and feet found natural holds, his body moving with a confidence he'd never known.

At the top, he looked down at the cluttered ground below. It was a short drop, but a risky one if he missed the landing. Matt inhaled deeply, then launched himself forward, leaping to a lower platform. His legs absorbed the impact with ease, and he landed in a crouch, barely out of breath.

"Holy shit," Matt whispered, adrenaline coursing through his veins. He stood up, a grin spreading across his face. "I feel like a damn superhero."

For the next hour, Matt explored the site, pushing himself to see what he could do. He climbed walls, jumped gaps, and balanced on narrow beams, all without hesitation. The system's guidance was like having an invisible coach whispering instructions in his ear.

By the time he left the site, his heart was racing—not from exhaustion, but from exhilaration. He hadn't felt this alive in years.

As Matt walked back toward his apartment, the system chimed again.

[Congratulations, Host. A hidden quest has been completed: Discovering Your Mobility. Rewards have been credited.]

A new notification appeared in his mind.

Reward: $150 and the skill [Spatial Awareness - Level 1].

Matt stopped in his tracks, his brow furrowing. "Spatial awareness?"

The system's voice answered.

[Spatial Awareness - Level 1: Enhances the user's ability to perceive and understand their surroundings. Improves reaction time and movement efficiency in dynamic environments.]

Matt grinned. "Now this is getting interesting."

The rewards from the system were starting to add up, but Matt knew he couldn't sit on them forever. If he wanted to get out of his rut, he needed a plan—something to turn these abilities into tangible results. And as much as the system intrigued him, it also left him with a lot of unanswered questions.

Later that evening, Matt sat on the edge of his bed, chain-smoking as he tried to sort through the whirlwind of changes in his life. His small apartment felt even smaller now, as if the system's presence had brought a kind of energy that didn't fit within the cramped walls. He stared out the window at the city lights, his mind racing.

"What do I do with this?" he muttered, flicking ash into the tray beside him. "I mean, what's the endgame here?"

As if reading his thoughts, the system chimed in.

[New Mission Unlocked: Define Your Purpose.]

Description: Use your abilities to make a meaningful impact on your life or the lives of others.

Requirements: Set a clear, achievable goal. Use your skills to work toward that goal.

Rewards: $300 and a Random Skill Token.

Matt sighed, running a hand through his messy hair. "Define my purpose, huh? Easier said than done."

He leaned back, staring at the stained ceiling. The truth was, he'd spent so much of his life just trying to get by that he'd never really thought about what he wanted. But now, with this system and these abilities, he had a chance to break free from the cycle. He could be someone different—someone better.

Snuffing out his cigarette, Matt stood and looked at himself in the mirror. His reflection stared back at him, tired but determined.

"Alright," he said softly. "I'll figure it out. One step at a time."

With that, he grabbed his hoodie and stepped out into the night. The city stretched out before him, vast and full of possibilities. For the first time in a long time, Matt felt ready to take it on. Whatever this system had in store for him, he wasn't going to waste it.
