Chapter 22 - Beneath the surface

Elise stood at the edge of the precipice, the weight of everything crashing down on her in waves. The wind whipped through her hair, and the world beyond seemed to stretch out endlessly, a vast expanse of nothingness that beckoned her into its depths. She couldn't remember how she had gotten here—how she had arrived at this place of truth and devastation. But there she was, standing on the edge of everything, on the brink of discovering who she truly was.

Greg was beside her, his presence a shadow she could no longer ignore. His gaze was fixed on the horizon, as if he could see beyond the world they both inhabited. He had always been the one to hold the pieces together, to keep the darkness at bay. But now, the truth was unraveling, and there was no stopping it.

"Elise," Greg's voice was steady, but there was a tremor beneath it. "We can't undo what's been done. You've always known that."

Her mind was a storm, the pieces of her past flashing before her eyes like broken glass—shards of a life she didn't recognize. She had always thought she knew who she was, who she had been, but now that certainty was slipping away. What was truth? What was fiction? Everything she had ever known was tainted by lies, by shadows that had followed her for as long as she could remember.

"I don't know who I am anymore," Elise whispered, her voice barely audible above the wind. "I don't know what's real."

Greg's hand rested lightly on her shoulder, a touch that should have been comforting but only served to remind her of the deep void that now existed between them. "The truth has a way of breaking everything. But you can't run from it, Elise. You never could."

She turned to face him, her eyes searching his face for something—anything—that could tell her what to do next. But his expression was unreadable, as it always had been. She had spent so long trying to understand him, trying to understand the man she had trusted, but now she realized that understanding was the last thing she wanted. Understanding meant accepting the things she could never change.

"I don't want to remember," she said, her voice thick with the weight of her own confusion. "I don't want to know the truth if it means losing everything."

Greg's face softened, and for a brief moment, she saw a flicker of the man she had once known. The one who had cared for her, the one who had held her hand in the dark. But that man was gone, swallowed by the darkness he had been hiding from her all along.

"You already know the truth," Greg said quietly. "You've always known."

A chill ran down Elise's spine as his words hit her like a physical blow. She had always known. The whispers. The shadows. The strange sense of déjà vu that had plagued her for years. It was all leading to this moment. She had always been part of this world, whether she had realized it or not.

"Why didn't you tell me?" she asked, her voice trembling with the weight of her heartbreak. "Why did you let me live in ignorance?"

Greg's eyes darkened, and for the first time, Elise saw something raw in him—something that had been buried for far too long. "Because I couldn't," he replied, his voice thick with regret. "I couldn't let you know. Not until you were ready."

"Ready for what?" Elise demanded. "Ready for the truth that will destroy me?"

"No," Greg said softly. "Ready to understand that you've never been the person you thought you were. You've been something else all along."

The words hung in the air between them, heavy and suffocating. Elise could feel her world crumbling around her, the foundation of everything she had believed in slipping away. She wanted to scream, to run, to escape from this reality that was closing in on her. But she couldn't. Not anymore. The truth had already consumed her.

"Elise, you were born into this," Greg continued, his voice low and urgent. "You've been marked since the day you were born. The ritual—it was meant for you. You are the key to everything."

The words hit her like a thunderclap. The key. She had always known there was something about her that was different, something that had set her apart from everyone else. But she had never imagined it would be this. She had never imagined that she was at the center of all the darkness, all the chaos. She had been the one they had been waiting for. The one who could unlock the door to everything.

"No," Elise whispered, shaking her head in disbelief. "I can't be. I won't be."

Greg's gaze softened, and for a brief moment, Elise saw a flicker of pity in his eyes. But it was fleeting, gone in an instant. "You don't have a choice, Elise. It's already been written."
